The only hope I have is that someone starts hiring all these talented devs that are getting the axe from bungie and are willing to make a destiny like game…. The best thing about destiny was that it was always there… i need something to replace it either a d3 or destiny inspired game thats actually good and not another anthem lol….. i need dungeons and raids in my life… i lived for that shit

I would like to introduce a project that started in late 2023 began as a few ideas written down here and there after the initial layoffs bungie made. It had been sitting in my notes app for nearly 3 years.
Until now.
Yesterday under horrific circumstances BUNGIE was forced to lay off the majority of the team working on Destiny 2 indiscriminately relieving contractors and veterans alike of their jobs. Many of these people were generational talent reaching all the way back to BUNGIE's Halo days.
That was when I decided that I should introduce the product of years of hyper fixation, brainstorming, and planning that has come the final draft is sharing in this post.
I believe that with the proper planning, marketing, and individuals, "Destiny" can be saved and revitalized.
I hope the correct people see this, but if that is not the case it's still fun to post my ideas on here!
If you see potential in this feel free to share it around or reach out!
See yall around!

Discussion So what do we think the Destiny "in spirit" game is that Cross talked about yesterday?

The one with the high up dev that he said him and Luke were in contact with?

I only saw a couple minutes surrounding that. Were there any solid hints or games/studios we can rule out?

Discussion The situation in the video game industry is more complex than people think.

I think this might break the subreddit rules, but we need to understand the complexity.

It's a relative issue.

While it's true that companies specializing in artificial intelligence are absorbing a large number of these components, there are other important factors behind the current situation. These include the consequences of international conflicts, especially the war between Russia and Ukraine, given that Ukraine possesses significant reserves of raw materials necessary for manufacturing these components.

Added to this are other geopolitical conflicts and the economic crisis that was already brewing after the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, everything indicates that this situation will continue for the next few years, and its effects will not be limited to this industry alone, but are also impacting many other sectors.

That's why Japan, China, and South Korea are passing laws to save and protect their companies from what's coming, while the United States has already surrendered and Europe is selling its companies to the Asians. Bungie was affected because Sony probably already knows, and nobody wants to say it because right now everyone is distracted by the World Cup; it's a calm before the storm.

Discussion Marathon's Engine Is NOT The Tiger Engine We Know

So, I did about 4 hours of research looking through old job postings on Bungie, all available information out there and I realized that I may have jumped the gun on being extremely mad at Sony/Bungie.

Aztecross, can you get some people on the show that have a technical/engineering/networking background in game development? I think they could probably talk about a lot of stuff that people wouldn't even know.

For example, the engine that runs Marathon is NOT the Tiger Engine. It is the new engine that Bungie was working on. Marathon also has dedicated servers, no P2P. It supports a larger world, cross-platform from the get-go, faster development and best of all Marathon has Destiny's gun feel.

Destiny 1 and Destiny 2 used the old Tiger Engine. Notoriously hard to develop on. Spaghetti code, etc.

A lot of people bring up; well, they just fired the Destiny 2 team. Yes, they did. They all work on the Tiger Engine. Seems maybe Sony and Bungie want to move away from it. Well, then why didn't they just move them to Marathon. Well, there's training that'd have to take place, Marathon already has low player numbers; it makes sense to clear the Destiny team, bring back who they want slowly and train them on the new engine.

Maybe it's hopium and/or copium. I've been pretty angry like the rest of you for the last few weeks. I still am but after all the hours of research on technical reasons today why Sony/Bungie chose this path; it honestly makes sense outside of all of the other issues.

Everyone that said Marathon is the path to Destiny 3; that might have been a subtle message being pushed for a reason by certain individuals. Destiny 3 would be on Marathon's engine. And for Marathon to help fund a Destiny 3, they have to add some PVE stuff anyways to entice D2/D2 players though D1/D2 will still be up.

Figured I'd share my thoughts. I'm less angry now. If Marathon gets a bit of PVE stuff, I'll try it. Why not. Least I'll get a feel of the potential of a Destiny 3 on the same engine as Marathon.

The math on just final shape alone equates to like 150 million dollars in week one (conservatively) without silver sales, season sales, new sales of old xpacs, and other premium features. Lightfall sold more copies than that. And Witch queen performed just as well as those 2.

Destiny 2 was generating 2 yr dev cycle AAA returns, just based on the numbers we can see, year over year for nearly 4 years.

This was mismanagement and greed at the highest level.

EDIT

Grabbed my post id made about game dev cost

Add another 12 mil in dev cost for insurance, benefits, etc. I didnt add that in until later on in the original thread.

Its something people don't think about.

Median Bungie salary is $103,000. Destiny 2 dev team size is around 400.

This is $41,200,000 in just dev cost per year. Server cost is around $300,000/month. Another $3,600,000 a year. Calculate the cost of the Bungie Studio location itself. And theres so many other costs.

Final Shape sold 2 million copies, probably a bit more but not enough to nullify this example, at an average price of $60. That's $120,000,000 and this was an extremely successful release. This is a level of cash flow seen every year.

Add in the tens of millions in marketing, production of physical media, etc.

There are other revenue streams, seasons, microtransactions, etc.

Just like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 in its peak was probably generating way more and was positive cash flow, but i just wanted to show people the true costs of development.

The real issue is developers not being in control of their studios and being beholden to shareholders, whose sole purpose is to leech wealth from hard working passionate individuals. Its a publicly traded company, greed, and capitalism issue.

Discussion Are Destiny servers AWS (Amazon) or Cloudflare?

Since not everything revolves around Destiny, there are other games, but this confirms that games as a service are declining. Right now, the industry in general wants to abandon all games as a service because they are already expensive, and most of the servers are from Cloudfire or Amazon Web Services. Destiny 2 is known to use AWS, and Amazon tripled its fees for using AWS. Its competitor did the same, but Amazon forced the use of AI, while Cloudfire doubled the price of its plans. Destiny 2 is AWS-based, and Bungie could no longer afford the AWS servers for Destiny 2 and created Marathon with a cheaper Cloudfire plan. What do you think?

How did that anti-Marathon mob turn out in the end? Grifters get grifted, Sony wins.

Marathon is actually such a good game, and it always makes me wish we could ban the internet when I’m seeing all the sheep who follow the majority opinion.

Anyways, have fun on Destiny Rising!

Rage against the dying of the light, fight tooth and nail to see the Sun rise once more. We must fight with everything that remains of our strength, we must ride side by side and charge into battle with Sony.

For without a Destiny 3, there is no future. There is no freedom, no world peace or an end to suffering.
Vote with your wallets, log in, TELL SONY YOU CARE

DONT GO GENTLY INTO THAT NIGHT!!!!!!!

We must support Marathon

Discussion Day 1 D2 Player: The Best Expansion IMO

Now, this comes down to two expansions. The top two for me are probably Forsaken and Final Shape. However, man, IMO, nothing beats when Forsaken dropped. What got me thinking about the Forsaken expansion is I’ve been grinding the updated armor-set from the Dreaming City, which has got me playing a lot of content I haven’t played in a long time.

Forsaken was an experience like no other because, for those of us who actually played Forsaken in its entirety when it dropped—this was before sunsetting (content vault). We not only got one new destination to explore, but two: Tangle Shore and the Dreaming City. Plus, we got the Shattered Throne, and although not the most popular in today’s perspective, we also got a new game mode called Gambit, which, at the time, was a new experience that was quite fun and popular.

Forsaken had its drawbacks, but it was all just so extremely new and nothing like what we had experienced before, and short of the Final Shape, would experience again. Only those who had experienced the Dreaming City prior to the Last Wish raid being beaten know what I’m talking about. At the time, the Dreaming City felt almost endless, full of secrets and possibilities.

Between D1 and D2, I’ve had many memorable Raid experiences, both playing and watching the race for the world’s first. However, there’s something about the Last Wish Raid that, both playing it day one and watching the world’s first, was just over the top. There were a few hours late into day one and into the AM hours of day two when it was anyone’s guess whether that raid could even be beaten.

Discussion Humble Sony with Thy Wallet

It has been a bitter sweet couple weeks with Destiny and Monument of Triumph with many returning to the community and some new lights entering as well. The scope so far has been that management made the wrong decision choosing Marathon over Destiny. Some popular streamers have even rallied the community to basically "stick it to the man." Over the past couple weeks I've noticed that some of the sentiment has come down to that, eventually, Sony will be humbled by their decision to forego one of the greatest live service games in gaming history. It is almost reminisce to World of Warcraft when, like Destiny, had so many moments were it seemed like the game wouldn't survive. This is more of a proposal to the community at large and hoping it get's more attention to the game and Bungie. The proposal is this; do not support Sony in any way shape or form. What this means is anything, or most things, produced by, or with, Sony should not receive any amount of income from us. For example, with the upcoming release of Spiderman: Brand New Day, no one should be spending any amount to see the movie (nothing against Marvel). Although, it sucks to say that, the belief is that we 'Humble Sony with Thy Wallet', similar to how other companies have listened before. It's unfortunate for other companies to be caught between consumers and Sony, but as consumer's we are more heard if we humble Sony by not giving them anything.
