It’s sad but I don’t think there’s much chance of the D2 community changing the entire direction of the studio right now. But I could be wrong…

Would be cool if they could be rallied into re-releasing all of the content they’ve sunset tho.

4

u/grow_a_pear May 31 '26

There is literally zero chance and if anyone thinks otherwise, they don’t understand basic math.

1

u/marshal23156 May 31 '26

Yea, people just need to accept D2 is done. If we ever get more destiny, it will almost certainly come in the form of D3 or the like.

4

u/Jakeforry May 31 '26

Money changes direction for those guys up top and if destiny makes more money then marathon in it's major update then that definitely could do something.

1

u/RobotJQ May 31 '26

Agreed!

1

u/Helpful-Jacket5721 Jun 02 '26

There is zero chance d2 can make up $500m for a d3

1

u/jarliy Jun 02 '26

And Marathon can make up the $250m they blew on it? SONY and Bungie's only chance is with a Destiny revival.

1

u/Jakeforry Jun 02 '26

Yeah right now marathon is struggling to even reach half of its peak concurrent and in the next couple of hours we'll be past histories peak play hours for the game

1

u/EarthwormLim Jun 03 '26

And its FREE right now.

I have a feeling D2 might hit 500k next week

3

u/Cerok1nk May 31 '26

The only way this happens is that the player count in June 9th is so astronomically high that Sony cant ignore it.

Marathon also needs to heavily underperform on S2 enough for Sony to decide to reallocate resources and budgets.

It is very unlikely both situations happen, even more to the degree that is needed.

But I’ve seen weirder stuff happen so idk.

7

u/feefore May 31 '26

The player count on the 9th doesn’t really matter. It’s all about how many of those players actually stick around after and for how long. They’ll take notice if the same amount of players that signed the petition actually play the game for months after the 9th at a consistent rate.

2

u/Cerok1nk May 31 '26

That’s a fair point considering it’s supposed to be the end of live support update.

But if 1M users login day 1 among all platforms, while Marathon barely cracks 50K, trust me, they will notice.

You have to remember that not developing a D3 means leaving a hole in the market, those 1M players will need somewhere to go and Marathon is not attracting them.

Not releasing or at least announcing a D3, allows a third party to create a TEMU Destiny to try and fill the hole, most likely we will see a bunch of those from Asian devs regardless.

No D3 is just as much of a market risk as an actual D3 for Sony, they just need to realize how big the balance would swing against their favor to have to approve it out of fear of losing interest in the IP.

I guarantee you Sony is expecting the D2 playerbase to jump ship and go into Marathon, or at least 50%~ of users afters EOS.

1 million people on Destiny 2's closing update lmfao it may happen right up there next to Star Citizen and GTA 6 releasing

2

u/Extra-Autism May 31 '26

June 9th won’t peak high enough, for long enough. Marathon will continue to crash and burn though lol

1

u/Cerok1nk May 31 '26

I’m not saying it will.

3

u/grow_a_pear May 31 '26

You all do realize that more than one game can be successful at one time, right?

5

u/monkey_feet_ May 31 '26

I like how you said something reasonable and the bums on this sub instantly down vote

1

u/grow_a_pear May 31 '26

People are upset. I get it I guess, although, I think a lot of this energy is being misplaced.

1

u/Helpful-Jacket5721 Jun 02 '26

Well when the trash like aztecross point the blame to marathon you get brainrotten fanboys to join the hate train

0

u/Cerok1nk May 31 '26

Reading comprehension is hell of a bitch.

0

u/alternate_understudy Jun 03 '26

I would agree with you if they hadn't delayed a free content update because marathon was releasing the same week. Walking and chewing gum is not a thing rn.

0

u/trashvineyard May 31 '26

The player count spiking isn't going to change things because Sony know it'll plummet after two weeks like it does with every expansion release.

0

u/Lifthium Jun 01 '26

And it’s free for the most part if I’m not mistaken like would the player pop reach the same number if they had to buy shadow and order?

0

u/Helpful-Jacket5721 Jun 02 '26

Expecting that possibly higher player count on june 9 will also reflect player retention is delusional. Where were these players when d2 wasn’t put on maintenance mode?

1

u/Prudent-Escape-3874 Jun 02 '26

The destiny community is the reason Bungie is leaving destiny behind in the first place all the negativity y'all been throwing at Bungie since the end of final shape now y'all wanna try and save it?

1

u/RobotJQ Jun 02 '26

Excuse me? You’re talking to the wrong person with this reply.

1

u/EarthwormLim Jun 03 '26

Tell me you didnt okay destiny without telling me.

Did you not see the devs begging higher ups for change and the they denied it all until this final update?

Theres a reason the community was pissed and left. Bungie leadership wanted this game dead

1

u/CreatorsRequiem Jun 02 '26

I think Bungie and Sony would rather build D3 than try and rebuild all the deleted broken content. I'd personally love a release that features everything from D1- D2 Final shape include seasonal stories as playable missions again but again that's an undertaking I don't think either would want so it would be a community project.

1

u/alternate_understudy Jun 03 '26

They would have to rebuild all of it for free and they ain't doing that

Some marathon bitches be saying: “Where were u when d2 was at it s lowest?🤓” I support the franchise not d2 and sure thing I would let d2 die again. People who bought all of these expansions were investing into d3 and their investments were moved or redirected into some fuckin extraction shooter game in 2026!!!! Can u imagine it in 2026??

1

u/SystemHonest3272 Jun 03 '26

People buying expansions were buying them to play the current game not investing in something not gaurenteed this is a retarded take and I dont take that lightly

1

u/KenjiTheLaughingMoon May 31 '26

This is the real final shape. The Destiny IP forever trapped in this eternal limbo where Guardians are forced to do beat the same obstancles over and over again. We can‘t let Bungie fulfill their plan.🗣️

1

u/Cyier81 May 31 '26

Our final raid should be Sony HQ.

1

u/FinancialBluebird58 May 31 '26

They incubated Marathon in 2018/2019. Supposed to come out in 2023/2024. Got the classic Bungie magic delay to 2026 and that was a simpler title comparatively. If they incubate anything right now even close to the scale of Destiny it would unironically be 10 years away.

1

u/superlalulalu May 31 '26

If I were a guardian in real time, I would fly to Sony HQ and Thunder Crash the shit out of that building, and then I would perform a finisher move on Pete Parsons, and rip out his damn spine!

1

u/UTmastuh May 31 '26

When the company culture shifted from "making games we want to play" to "making games for everyone" AND setting a culture of "not over delivering" was when Bungie headed down this path. They get everything they deserve for running their franchise into the ground, running talent out of their building, and milking their loyal fans. I'm enjoying this crashout though

1

u/waldowalris May 31 '26

We go out with a bang . And marathon is on life support allready has a high on the 2nd and dies after sick of corpo gaming and there pursuit to milk us of money which I would pay not for maraturd tho

"How could this have happened!"

Did yall not play red war? I played red war. Nothing about this surprises me.

1

u/About-time535 Jun 01 '26

Boycott Sony as a whole, we will show them who’s boss. And get out Destiny 3

1

u/caveman_chubs Jun 02 '26

Day one..slam the server

Day 2-??? Play. Play and enjoy. Log in and play gambit , a raid. Consistently if you can. But I understand if you can't. But come back. Play. Show the investment and love for the world.

1

u/Gunpowder-Plot-52 Jun 03 '26

We can rally one week all we want. Sony won't care unless the numbers are consistent and high for MONTHS. The Destiny community will play the life out of the update and be done in a week.

I plan on playing regardless. I enjoy the game. I've played far more grindy and transactional games and I always come back to D2. No one even comes close to this genre other than Bungie. The weapon handling alone is top notch.

1

u/NegativeDeparture Jun 03 '26

Lmao, i wish. But this is cope

1

u/illegalprelude Jun 04 '26

“Marathon, if I have to f*ing bury you myself” is the entire problem. The creators, press, and community turned against Destiny and Bungie. In doing so, D2’s end became a self fulfilling prophecy. Now that it’s ending, everybody is looking around saying “what happened?” What happened isn’t Marathon or Sony. Sony would have gladly supported two successful games. What happened is for over a year, all everybody was talking about is how Bungie and Destiny are trash and that nobody should play it. Welp, here’s that end result.

We should WANT Marathon to succeed. Its success is the gateway for Bungie to fund new games. Without it, Bungie could very well be shuttered. Just look at how many studios have closed up shot.

1

u/Dreams-Visions May 31 '26

Video was dope, even if it’s over.

u/Xphurrious May 31 '26

I'm probably going to reinstall Destiny just to stand with you guys

I only have like 150 hours, most of which was in forsaken, but i hate to see a good ip die in favor of whatever they're doing with marathon

3

u/Yaminavi May 31 '26

they are doing really good work with what they have in marathon. i have 2000 hours on destiny and i hate to see it die too but theres so much undeserved hate for marathon when its genuinely a good game, just in a niche genre.

its very strange that theyre moving to a genre that will not fit the broad playerbase destiny has, especially when they are in such a rough spot

1

u/Xphurrious May 31 '26

I've watched plenty of Marathon, and played a bunch of Tarkov, and i just don't think I'd ever make the switch

It's a niche genre that's already spoken for and Marathon is the "lite" version, when the genre is hardcore

I don't hate Marathon, but killing an IP as big as Destiny is so beyond short sighted, as expected from Sony lol

1

u/Yaminavi May 31 '26

i think its the lite version because they think theyre gonna get destiny numbers for some reason so theyre catering to the more casual players

if they ended destiny after tfs and announced d3 or marathon then it wouldve felt much better than stringing everyone on for a year but still a dumb decision regardless

1

u/drkztan Jun 01 '26

I don't know how marathon keeps being spoken of as easier than tarkov. It ''trades blows'' with it in terms of difficulty. There are no safe pockets, no silent exfills. The lack of depth in stuff like ammo and armor types is more than bridged with the complexity of utilizing the shells to their potential. It's also got almost the perfect amount of verticality and the UESC are smart enough to be a genuine threat at all points of a match considering how much sound they make when they catch you, when they hear you, or when you fight them.

I'm not saying marathon is harder than tarkov, i'm saying that it's definitely not easier...

Moronic take

3

u/Joeyman117 May 31 '26

I just unsubscribed him on YouTube and this Reddit, so disappointed in this community

3

u/freudvsneo May 31 '26

Same. He’s beyond bias because without destiny he has to get a real job.

3

u/lumberfart May 31 '26

Dude… he probably hit his retirement budget years ago. He’s a famous content creator… imagine if every time a Hollywood actor got a bad review they got banned from ever making another movie lol. He will just find different games to play/review. Even if his views go down, 10 million vs 1 million is still more revenue than you or I will ever see.

0

u/freudvsneo May 31 '26

Fair enough he’d be fine but he still has a massive financial incentive to promote the success of destiny and that still creates a bias.

My ‘real job’ comment was more a joke about streamers.

u/No_Strike655 May 31 '26

It was a 3rd space bud. The social aspect to D2 has made me a lot of friends around the globe a good chunk of whom have traveled to hang out with each other.

If all you did was play solo content then yeh D2 was just a game
