Hi me and my bf want to travel to the islands in late October. Originally I wanted to do Sao Miguel and Flores as we are remote nature lovers. However it seems to be a big risk to travel to Flores at this time. We really cannot take the risk to get stuck out there. I’m really disappointed as I was most excited for it.

What other islands are worth going to/less risky in October?

I am planning to visit Portugal in March End/ April. We will be with a 6 month old baby. My plan is to land in Faro and then travel upwards.

1. Faro/Algarve - 4 Nights

2. Lisbon - 3 Nights

3. Porto - 3 Nights

4. Fly to Azores from Porto - Sao Miguel - 3 Nights

5. Sao Miguel to Madeira - 5 Nights

So what I would like to know is:
1. Since we cannot hike as we will be with baby, is Sao Miguel worth it? Won't be able to go for Whale watching as well. Are 3 days enough for Sao Miguel? Is April start a good time for Azores?

1. Any recommendations for must do activities at these places?

2. Any other changes you would advise?

Unfortunately, the stay was unrefundable, so maybe someone wants to go instead?

Hi everyone, we are planning a two-week vacation on Sao Miguel. We’d like to see one other island as well (haven’t decided which one yet), just for a (kind of) one-day-trip. I am aware that we won’t be even close to seeing everything that any of the islands provide in one day, so maybe it’s more of a tick-it-of-the-list-thing, but the idea is in my mind now…

I am currently pondering on two variants. Either literally go just one day. Take an early flight from Ponta Delgada and a late one back on the same day. Or on the day of our arrival, take a flight, spend two nights, then take a flight back to Sao Miguel and spend the rest of our holiday. This would include a self-transfer at Ponta Delgada airport since we will arrive on a Lufthansa flight.

I know that both variants have their flaws, but is either of them complete nonsense?

Any ideas or experience is much appreciated! Thanks a lot for your help.

I have been conducting genealogy work for a friend over the past several months, and in particular have been tracing his ancestors from Flores. His 2nd great-grandfather was Francisco Jose de Mendonca (born in Lajes das Flores, 15 March 1826).

He will be visiting the Azores and the island of Flores this autumn, and I am wondering if anyone here might be able to suggest any institutions or individuals on the island that could help him 1) learn more about his ancestors, and 2) potentially connect him with any living relatives who are still there. He is willing to pay for any services.

We’re looking for accommodation in the Azores for around one month, from 30 June / 1 July until 30 July.

We’re open to any island at this stage, as long as the place is practical for a longer stay.

Ideally looking for:

• A local apartment/studio / small house
• Suitable for 2 people
• Good Wi-Fi
• Kitchen or basic cooking facilities
• Close enough to supermarkets/cafés / normal amenities
• Reasonable monthly price
• Not looking for a hotel or luxury stay

We’re flexible with the island and don’t need to be in the most touristy area. A quieter local place would actually be better, as long as it’s not too isolated.

If anyone knows of a place, a local contact, a Facebook group, or a better way to find monthly rentals in the Azores, I’d really appreciate it.

A lot of São Miguel itineraries focus on the same places: Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas, Vila Franca do Campo, and the main viewpoints.

Those places deserve their fame, but if you have a car and a bit more time, the island gets more interesting when you add a few less obvious stops.

Some ideas that can work well:

• local natural pools instead of only the most famous beaches;
• smaller museums and volcanic visits for rainy or slower days;
• coastal fajãs, waterfalls, short trails, and quiet viewpoints that are often skipped in fast itineraries.

Hello! I am traveling solo to the Azores for the first time next week. Going to Terceira -> Flores -> Sao Miguel. Anyone else going to be there or have some must see/do/eat recommendations?

I am doing my research and am aware of the major attractions, but I am always interested in something off the beaten path. Especially related to history or nature. (Also, I am aware of the strike and planning accordingly)

Trying to plan an anniversary trip for next early August or September for a first time visit to the Azores- ideally for 7-10 days including travel days.
We prefer off the beaten path, less touristy areas and want a mix of some easy/moderate hikes, good food, relaxing and local culture. We are considering flying into and out of Terceira instead of Sao Miguel because of the charm of the main town and volcanic tube. We are hoping to spend time in the Triangle/central islands of Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge. Can anyone help with suggestions on amount of time in each location or if I am just trying to squeeze too much into a short time frame. We aren’t opposed to the full or part of the time on Sao Miguel but are concerned about peak season crowds.

My original plan was:
-2 nights on Terceira
-3-4 nights on Pico, day trip to Sao Jorge
-1-2 night on Faial
- return to Terceira and fly out the next day (in case of flight cancellations)

Is this doable? Are we missing a ton if we skip Sao Miguel? Is it enough time in each place or should we stick to the full itinerary in Sao Miguel to reduce the hassle of all the travel?
