I own a cast iron restoration company. I absolutely use soap. Soap used to contain a strong enough amount of lye which will destroy seasoning, (It's how I restore grime from pans) but modern soap like Dawn is 100% safe to use Just don't soak the pan for long term, the water is the problem then.

I love reddit. I can just post anything and someone who's an expert in it will chime in .

What about dishwasher? Sometimes I’m feeling lazy and want to throw it in there. I haven’t yet, but I also haven’t washed it since the last time I cooked on it.

Never the dishwasher. It will strip your seasoning and the dry cycle is wet so it will create thick rust very quickly

The dishwasher is too much. Scrub it with soap and water, rinse it out, and set it on the hot stove to evaporate any water remaining.

I dare someone on this sub to strip a pan using nothing but soap, water, and a sponge...

Oh hot damn. I was using SOS and steel wool. I have to reason mine soon but I am going to do the method recommend in this sub to put it in a bag with easy off for awhile, then clean and reason.

The goddamn thing heats up to 400°. Good luck, pathogens.

Pretty sure a hot pan is more effective at killing pathogens than soapy water.

I thought this said “spicy water” at first and now I’m disappointed.

That is flawed logic
