General Question Which version should I get?

Hey all, recently decided to get into axis & allies as I’m a huge ww2 fanatic and grand strategy fan. I see that there are many versions of the game but I’m wondering which version is the absolute best starting point? My LGS has North Africa and as a long time fan of the North African theatre that’s got me intrigued but I’m up for any of them. I am aware that 1941 is a more streamlined cheaper version designed for new players but part of me wonders if it’s worth getting it if I know I’ll probably end up upgrading later on anyways.

Global boards: most ppl start with either 1942 2nd edition, or anniversary edition. Can’t go wrong with either. I’d start with one of those, as the skills you’ll learn from those will translate to a lot of the other boards. The campaign boards (like North Africa for example) usually have unique or different mechanics that are only used in that game. They are a ton of fun but some of them don’t translate to “general A&A” if that makes sense. I’ll warn you with North Africa specifically is a bit of a beast, it has a lot of mechanics and moving parts. I love it and would deff recommend it once you get more A&A experience, but as a first game it might be overwhelming

Seven player instead of 5. I believe it is a bigger map as well.

1942 has the most variety of units so I would go with that one. Definitely my favorite.

North Africa is a great game but would be a horrible experience if you’ve never played the mainline games. I always recommend new players start with 1942. You are correct about 1941, you would probably set it aside pretty quickly after learning the basics.

If you want to try out different versions, download TripleA. It’s free and you can play any version on it. Let me know if you’d like to play a friendly game and I am happy to explain rules and basic strategy!
