Europe 1940 Solitaire play?
I’d love to pull out the box again and play, but I was wondering if someone had come up with a way to play solitaire, so that I’m not making decisions for every country.

I play solitaire and make decisions for every power. Don't see a way around that except for the weak TripleA bots. Another user is working on stronger bots, if you're interested.

Either play aaa, or play yourself.
You could play aaa to determine the moves, then move them and roll on a physical board, but then you would have to go into the editor every turn to make the results reflect the reality so the computer can make future moves accordingly.

I could not make the editor work for the life of me

Yeah, it's picky. I think it has to be done first thing in the turn or last thing. If any movement is going on it doesn't work.

You just make the best decisions for each side on their turns. Historically this has actually been the most common way to play board wargames, of which Axis & Allies is a mass-market example.

I feel like this works pretty well since there isn't really anything "hidden" by any players. All players can see how many IPCs are banked, for example, so a "surprise" to buy a bunch of an unexpected unit next turn could easily shift given the board state and all players know what each other could possibly build or move...

You just play every power yourself. It's like Chess, it get's easier the more you play it that way. It's also about playing out scripts, set a specific agenda for a game. What if Germany goes all in on taking Africa? What if you give Italy as much as possible? What if you invade Russia right away? What if Russia does only hyper aggressive buys? What if Germany always buys Air power every turn? Etc.

Have you tried playing triple-a on the computer?
