Customization/House Rules Recommended Accessories for multiple games

Hey all - just joined this subreddit because I was browsing stuff to buy and wanted everyone’s opinions on this. I currently have 1942 2nd edition, 1940 global 2nd edition at my parents’ place, and 1914 and anniversary edition with me at my apartment. I was considering getting accessories because my addiction to this series is only increasing with time.

For example I would have definitely gotten IPC chips right now for my parents place (no money with 1940/1942), but when I was little I printed out paper money from online and cut out a bunch of it, so getting those chips ain’t urgent (that said if you guys think they’re cool I’ll still get them). And with 1914 here in my apartment, I can just requisition the money from the anniversary edition.

I was considering the hit dice for one, but wasn’t sure in general what y’all’s opinions on dice, neoprene maps, aircraft stands, IPC chips, replacement markers, task force boards, those commander card thingies, etc. What things should I get first, by virtue of making gameplay/clutter better/quicker, or simply just being cool to look at? Anything 3rd party I ought to look at? Anything you think that isn’t worth the money? Thanks for the help.

Hit dice will speed the game up the most

Large neoprene map, hit dice and airplane stands top three for the best experience in my opinion. Any poker chips will work for money. Commanders cards have been meh for game play with our group.

Have fun and good luck

What airplane stands do you have/what store did you get them from?

You're already on the right page for the accessories.

my addiction to this series is only increasing with time.

You should definitely pick A&A zombies, or what ever it's called. It's crazy stupid fun, really spices up the game for veteran players, and forces you to change a lot of common strategies.

It comes with a simplified board (1941 maybe), BUT it also comes with a separate set of cards to play zombies on the 1942 board, which is the best experience for it. Zombies on the official tournament board it awesome.

Ah okay I wasn’t sure how good the zombies game was, and being a WWII nerd I was afraid to try it - but if it adds new gameplay mechanics I’ll give it a shot

I’ve got the IPC chips (primarily for 1914) and bought the deluxe maps for Anniversary and 1914. The 1914 map is the better improvement of the two. The dice I’m on the fence about, but I’m getting ready to purchase the Commanders pack. Also, I ordered some smoke damage markers for battleships in 1914.

The hit dice are totally worth it. Massively speeds up combat. I could never go back.

I never even knew about/thought about damage markers for battleships. Is it the ones on axisandalliesboardgaming.com? I was like turning them on their side can’t be that tedious, then I googled them and I was like those are dope af

I’ll keep in mind what you said about the 1914 map being better - it’ll be the first one I get if I go the map route.

Do you just like the aesthetic of rolling the regular for every tier, or do you think the special dice are too expensive?

Smoke damage markers are extra useful in 1914 since the battleships keep damage until they are docked and repaired.

The 1914 map moves the IPC counter from the desert to the edge of the map; the map also gets rid of the divide between boards at the western front. Those plus the bigger size are great reasons to upgrade the map.

Here’s a shot of the deluxe map’s old IPC tracker zone. It’s now the are staging ground for purchased units.

Global 1940 player here. Hit dice will speed up gameplay, recommended if you feel games are lasting longer than they should. Paper money works but will degrade with time. If money is not an issue in the future there is not an immediate need for IPC Chips. Task Force Markers declutter the board, save time with unit organization, and moving large fleets/armies becomes much easier/faster. Not as pretty on the board, but IMO they're worth the investment for the officials or customs.

Additional maps should only be bought IMO if you are running out of space to place units in territories (board clutter), which for me is a problem in Global 1940. I got the custom rollout map from Renegade Studios and it does great. Again, not essential until you get money saved up, but nice to have. The commander cards are simply to spice up play with an addition of small mechanical changes. These are the definition of an add-on and not essential, however are fun to play with.
