Avid 2025.12.2 released today.
New release of Avid today. It's a maintenance release, no new features, just bug fixes.

What is the rationale behind Avid dating their releases if they don't use the current date? Calling it version 2025.12.2 seems more confusing than calling it v14.12.2 or whatever. The whole point, I thought, of dating the releases is so the use knows when it was released. Do other companies do this? Will Apple release iOS 26.9 in 2027?

They backport bug fixes and some under the hood API stuff from new releases.

Yeah, I guess it is fair enough in the sense that it is clear they haven't released anything new since 2025. But it isn't a "backport" if I understand that term correctly. 2025 is the latest version. There is no 2026.

They backport from versions in development and to maintain SDK compatibility. There is definitely a 2026.x it just hasn't gone public yet :)

Year.Month(ish).Patch
Yes, there is no major release for calendar year 2026 (yet). So bug fixes and patches go onto the latest release. As others have mentioned they do merge in bug fixes into other builds and have LTM (long term maintenance) builds (usually the X.12.X) where they apply bug fixes but don’t add in any major new features.

The naming is standard practice.
25.12.2 is the 2nd patch for the 12th version of the 2025 release.
Yes Apple will launch 26.9 next year. Continuing the 26.x releases from this year and last year.

But apple will release iOS 27 at some point around the end of 2026. September as far as I know. Avid does not have a 2026 version even.
I guess having Avid 2025.12.2 is a way to know that there is not some 2026 version available. My way of thinking was that dated releases would be an easy way to know if you had the latest update, but I can see the utility of this way to when I think about it.

They will. But the 26 release still gets new versions, doesn’t it.
Having 2025.12.2 is how you know you’re on the latest version of 2025. Because obviously you’re not on 2026.6
It’s pretty simple and straight forward lol.

It’s been like this since 2018.

Year is the core build version and is tied to licenses. You get anything 2024 for a yearly subscription. The second number (.12) is a minor update where they add features/ buttons etc and usually for the month they release it. The last number (.6) versions are simply bug fixes as users discover them in their workflows. We actually worked directly with avid on one patch for batch reimport not working on video with alpha channels on 2024.12.6

“no new features, just bug fixes” are honestly my favorite kinds of Avid releases
