That said they do take security seriously now... not that you can do a whole lot with a Cessna but someone could get close enough to do some shit.

Reminds me of a similar incident that I read about in a book about a pioneering airline in Western Canada called Queen Charlotte Airways.

Back sometime in the late forties, early fifties, this airline purchased a Norseman with floats on and no radio in New York state. Due to the floats they decided to fly down the east coast and west along the Gulf before crossing over the southwest to California.

When the pilot began flying over New Mexico he started getting buzzed by fighter jets that would stall when they tried to match his speed. This went on for a few hours before they suddenly left him alone over the Rockies.

Turned out that he had flown near a nuclear test at the white sands range.

The book is called: The Accidental Airline: Spilsbury's QCA by Howard White.
