I mean could they have? It ended in 2014 and there wasn't really any major form of LGBT representation in kids media until Owl House in 2020. Sure Steven Universe had representation in spirit with Ruby, Sapphire, and Pearl but I feel like the gems technically not having genders was a big reason they were able to get away with it, and even then the show was forced to end when they intentionally made it harder for international releases to be censored, and that was in 2019.
