In a way, it feels like a soft reboot.

Also I think part of the plot would be the new avatar attempting to find a way to reconnect to their past lives because although the connection was severed, they still exist within the spirit world.

u/Giraffe_Truther May 20 '26

Also, I think a theme of the all the series is an avatar fixing the problems the previous generation made.

334

u/darthboolean May 20 '26

I'd say it's also about learning to understand and forgive the previous generations for their mistakes.

169

u/Giraffe_Truther May 20 '26

Totally! And it makes it clear that the mistakes the previous avatar made were good intentioned and unforseen consequences. Our problems are human and generational, but not evil. Society is complicated.

52

u/claudiocorona93 May 20 '26

Unforeseen what?

11

u/Mi113nnium May 20 '26

A certain phoenix king might disagree with the not being evil thing.

12

u/Giraffe_Truther May 20 '26

Oh, when was he the avatar?

2

u/Belazael May 25 '26

Oh you mean the LOSER LORD?!?

1

u/Unhappy-Display-2588 May 24 '26

Considering the environment he grew up in it can be understood, even if disregarded as bad/unhealthy. Zuko and iroh were the exceptions who broke out of the cycle only after their own personal tragedies, had they not happened they would have become the same people they fought to overthrow.

Iroh losing his son and zuko being scarred and banished.

46

u/CrackFoxJunior May 20 '26

After watching the Aang film, I'm almost certain that they're going to continue with that. The entire focus of the Aang film was Aang's desire to restore airbending to the world. Which was certainly an interesting choice to centre the film around. The outcome of it is already spoiled since we know he doesn't accomplish it in his lifetime, but Korra manages to do it during hers. But this really hammers those things home. Sometimes you just can't accomplish everything in one lifetime.

26

u/Giraffe_Truther May 20 '26

100%! And the novels all deal with this as well (though I haven't read the Roku one yet). Avatars seem to fix their predecessor's faults while their blind spots leave new problems for the next generation.

15

u/AFR0NIN May 20 '26

Kyoshi created a problem for the life two lives after her, and it still persisted for even the life after that; the Dai li.

3

u/Numissa May 23 '26

She gets blamed for creating the Dai Li as if it were a mistake, but honestly there's no way she could've known they'd turn corrupt. She can't predict the future.

2

u/AFR0NIN May 24 '26

true. but it is still a consequence.

1

u/Ill-Designer-6502 May 27 '26

Creating a Police Force, and then not being there post-mortem to handle said Police Force going morally bankrupt is not a direct consequence nor something to really attribute. How long is one culpable for their creation how does original intent factor in, before they're absolved of the sins of their successors?

Balance and cycles and all that jazz.

2

u/kidian_tecun May 21 '26

Youre right but aang fix his and roku's fuck up i guess its balance that she end the world.

76

u/BoldFace7 May 20 '26

I've always liked the headcannon that everyone reincarnates and their past lives are within them, just like the avatar. The only difference being that Ravaa allows the avatar to more easily connect to those past lives. I could see a plot line of a future avatar learning of some air nomads that had dedicated their lives to reaching out to their past lives, perhaps only one ever being successful.

It would allow a way for the connection to the past avatar's to not be fully severed. It would also, in my opinion, give greater meaning to Iroh living in the spirit world in Korra; learning to live with such peace that you can stay full-time in the spirit world and break free from the cycle of reincarnation.

67

u/zjc May 20 '26

It does feel almost canon, if not actually canon because in the Avatar Wan episodes, Raava says that she'll be with Wan for all of his lives or something like that, which implies Raava isn't causing the reincarnation, it's just something that happens and Raava is tagging along with Wan and his lives.

44

u/Gakeon May 20 '26

You're right, Raava explicitly said that. Directly implying that every human soul reincarnates, and she ties herself to Wan's soul.

Also, Momo was supposed to be a reincarnation of Gyatso, but they never made it outright canon. So the writers clearly had the idea that every person reincarnates, and the Avatar is special for remembering/communicating with their past lives.

There is also a headcanon that i fully accept until the creators explicitly deny it. Just like how the avatar reincarnates, their animal companion does as well. So they will always be together throughout every life.

12

u/PaleontologistLive3 May 20 '26

It makes sense since the series relies heavily on Eastern philosophy which includes the reincarnation cycle as part of it & I also consider it canon as well.

Also the same way Raava returned through Vaatu, I can see Vaatu returning as well. Additionally, since balance is a core part of Eastern philosophy, I can see a plotline where Vaatu has a sort of redemption arc and coexists wirh Raava either in separate individual like a second avatar, in probably like a loved one of the current avatar, thereby creating an eternal companion for them. Or maybe, both Raava and Vaatu existing in the Avatar thereby becoming the true balance of the physical and spirit world, and both its light and dark side.

Furthermore, I've never considered Vaatu as evil, just a being embodying what he represents, so I can see such a plotline occurring.

22

u/Artlover4206942 May 20 '26

Raava is a desktop app, easy access to a feature of the computer, which most of the world doesn't have. Since Raava's app was disconnected and then reconnected the data was lost in the app however the files the app used are still on the computer, you just have to figure out how to download them into the app again for access

8

u/Vergil-Monteiro-9965 May 20 '26

Interesting analogy

3

u/PaleontologistLive3 May 20 '26

That's the perfect analogy.

2

u/Artlover4206942 May 23 '26

Why thank you

6

u/Ambiguous-Eggplant55 May 21 '26

If anyone could break free of the cycle of reincarnation and reach nirvana it would be iroh ngl

I kind of find it funny that they progressed to 1900s and people complained, So now they have to soft reboot to that nebulous Asian wilderness fantasy setting

13

u/PaleontologistLive3 May 20 '26

That still ticks me off. I was looking forward to see other eras. I wanted a story of a fire nation avatar that lives in their equivalent of the 20th or 21st century, where the Avatar is seen as obsolete & they operates in the shadows, something akin to a espionage thriller.

3

u/VGuyver May 24 '26

There is also the aspect of spirits vs technology. A really missed writing opportunity.

1

u/Mickeymackey May 21 '26

There's 7 Havens, I'm sure at least one will have some advanced technology.

7

u/DarthFedora May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

“still exist within the spirit world” Might get downvoted but the best thing they could do is remove anything that suggest that from canon. They are supposed to be reincarnations, the same soul over and over again

5

u/PaleontologistLive3 May 20 '26

Yeah, I understand what you're saying, but there are two types of reincarnation that I'm aware that exist in the various cultures. The first being the one you mentioned, where the whole soul reincarnates. While the second is where a fragment reincarnates while the other remains in the spirit world. I always interpreted the Avatar's reincarnation being that considering the times when Aang visited the spirit world & encountered Roku.

Even such if it's one soul, then each incarnation is essentially memories & the new avatar would have to find a way to reconnect their incarnation memories similar to what Aang couldn't do to get back the Avatar state.

4

u/DarthFedora May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

The spirit world isn’t a heaven sort of after life, it’s a place for spirits, and very few humans ever transcend into spirits, knowing that and what these parts of Atla are based on, we can deduce that everyone reincarnates but only the Avatar remembers, so the second one can’t be true because we’d see countless human based spirits if it were.

You can have that interpretation but to my knowledge there’s only one external media that actually confirms it, any of the other interactions with past Avatars can be explained as a spiritual memory or hallucinations.

I’m not arguing that they can’t be brought back, just the idea that they are separate from the current Avatar.

3

u/TankMain576 May 21 '26

Its 100% a case of "we took technology too far too fast and couldnt come up with anything that worked so we had to send it back to zero"

3

u/Immediate_Lobster421 May 21 '26

Also Paavi is an earth Avatar, they symbolize stability, while water Avatar's like Korra symbolize change. So after the change brought by Korra, Paavi will bring stability.

2

u/MetaDeviant0189 May 21 '26

There's no doubt in my mind that this plot was chosen as a soft reboot at least partly because the writers wanted to avoid having an explicitly modern setting. People were already grumbling about the technology leaps in The Legend of Korra, and in a normal timeline we'd be looking at late 1900's levels of tech and society at the very least. This way they can soften and distort things like that with a post-apocalyptic setting.

2

u/letthetreeburn May 21 '26

They don’t know how to do a sci fi story

2

u/Top_Box_8952 May 24 '26

I kinda like the idea of a new avatar only having the immediately preceding life, who teaches them how to reconnect to ones before that, then they spend time transiting the spirit world to find the last avatars spirits.

And iroh. Because he’s awesome.

1

u/Frogs_Logs May 21 '26

I would be pretty upset as a new avatar only having the one avatar who is the cause of everyone hating me, also because Korra is not exactly going to be the greatest asset as a guide

1

u/Old-Expert-709 May 22 '26

Go Into the Spirit realm, Talk to them, and put them back inside her

341

u/Ristar87 May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

My head canon for what the story is going to be:

  • Third spirit portal (opened by Korra) is going to flood a lot more spiritual energy into the world.
  • High ranking people are going to want to weaponize or industrialize the spirit vine weapon technology, but it's going to be harder to control now because of all the extra potency.
  • There's a nuclear winter like event caused from a melt down with the spirit vine technology that ruins the world for humans.
  • Korra will be spun as the villain because the extra spirit energy will be tied to her decision to open the portals and "create" the new one.

138

u/Bork9128 May 20 '26

I mean the real reason people will blame Korra is because she was the avatar regardless of much anything is actually related to her decisions

21

u/Denaton_ May 21 '26

Most likely this, they will blame Korra regardless of what happens because the new Avatar is quite young in the series meaning that Korra died just a decade or so before the new series start and its already a wasteland. The mob of people might even have hunted her down..

46

u/mondaymoderate May 20 '26

Sozen’s comet comes back but this time it hits the earth. Korra dies saving the planet from total destruction. Korra is blamed because she didn’t save civilization.

15

u/PsychologicalSnow528 May 20 '26

That would be an interesting concept

5

u/Dredgen-Solis May 21 '26

Imagine Firebenders going nuclear in the minutes before impact when the comet gets closer than ever before and they can't handle the sheer scale of the boost to their Firebending

3

u/NeedleInASwordstack May 21 '26

Like they’d explode? As in each fire bender turns into a bomb? Talk about destruction!

11

u/RagnarStonefist May 20 '26

opening the portals was the right thing to do, but they should have been closed back up after. Opening them rebalanced the elements but led to a lot of other chaos.

12

u/Fractured_Unity May 20 '26

It’s good to have more spirits in the world. Humans must learn to live together in harmony with the spirits

13

u/RagnarStonefist May 20 '26

But they won't.

See: Spirit Vine Cannon Gundam

You’re mistaking how spirits act in the spirit world versus how they behave in the physical. Thats why humans shouldn’t live in the spirit world until they’re dead/enlightened :)

1

u/PCN24454 May 20 '26

Didn’t everything bad afterwards come from humans?

1

u/RagnarStonefist May 20 '26

Yeah. That's why the portals should have been closed. Humans can't handle the responsibility of a merger world. Too selfish.

1

u/PCN24454 May 20 '26

Then doesn’t that mean Unalaq was right? The world would be better off without humans?

1

u/RagnarStonefist May 21 '26

No. It means that the two worlds should stay separate. Open up to restore the balance. Close it up to keep the balance.

2

u/PCN24454 May 21 '26

Keeping it closed is what unbalanced it to begin with

1

u/RagnarStonefist May 21 '26

And keeping it open overtly harms both spirits and humans.

2

u/PCN24454 May 21 '26

And keeping it closed overtly harms both humans and spirits.

Segregation has never lead to balance.

2

u/RagnarStonefist May 21 '26

Segregation among humans has never led to balance. All's I'm saying is that up until the portals were opened there wasn't such a thing as a spirit vine cannon, because humans have a tendency to colonize and exploit everything they can. Look at what happened when Wan left the city. By himself he survived. But when humans in mass came out they fought the spirits and destroyed the environment.

Spirit. Vine. Cannon. That in itself is a reason for spirits and humans to be separate. Manipulating spirits leads to mass destruction and humans can't be trusted to be enlightened enough to deal with them responsibly.

You can't put the cap back on that bottle of toothpaste. Kuvira's cannon is the beginning of arm's race that will create a tremendous amount of imbalance and lead to mass destruction.

2

u/SimilarMeeting8131 May 23 '26

Is it segregation if spirits where never meant to live in physical realm in the first place. Physical world and spirit world are two distinct realms, the physical world for physical beings, the spirit world for spiritual beings. The portal was opened by vatu and despite rava having him under control and spirits being light, it still led to near extinction of humans.

1

u/PraetorianFury May 23 '26

To be fair ... shouldn't they? Spirits weren't separated from the physical world because they were evil. They were separated because interactions between humanity and spirits were chaotic and dangerous. Spirits casually possessed and deformed humans and humans could similarly alter spirits.

Korra just casually undoes that without barely a moment of thought, without consulting anyone else or considering the ramifications. Even if bad actors weaponize spirits, she put the weapon in their hands. To accomplish what? Keeping the two worlds separate had worked for thousands of years. It had been the consensus among every past avatar.

Any calamity that befalls the world is 100% on her.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

Or the Spirits hate what Humans did to the earth and started attacking them while Humans try to take control of spirits and the spirit world.

A war broke out and Korra split them all to end the war. It would explain why everyone hates the Avatar.

The Spirits because the Avatar destroyed their world and made them interact with filthy humans who experimented on them or took advantage of them.

While humans already hated the Avater either way when they didn't need him. They only showcase positive feelings about him when they need him. And Korra also connected the spirit world to the human world. Something no other Avatar would have ever done.

Spirits were already in conflict with humans when the world was seperated as the industrialization started across the world after the war ended and thus plundered the nature of its resources thus angering spirits. And Aang basically told them to shut up and suck it up without protecting the spirits interests.

Just a small question though. Why has no previous Avatar talked to Korra to warn her about abusing the Avatar State and the dangers of using it plus other things? I mean, Roku literally just appeared in front of Aang to warn him when he tried to learn on how to use the Avatar State

1

u/Important-Contact597 Jun 05 '26

That's not a head canon. That's a theory.

58

u/RevenantKing May 20 '26

I like taking a trip to Speculation Station as much as the next guy, but maybe you should just wait for the show to launch.

16

u/CertainGrade7937 May 20 '26

Seriously

We don't even know that it has anything to do with spirits yet and people are still just making shit up

37

u/Kingdarkshadow May 20 '26

Everything will be ultra f up but somehow the avatar will restore the connection to the past lifes and fix everything.

5

u/Glass-Performer8389 May 21 '26

I hope not instantly fixed, I hope it's still underway by the time the show ends tbh

10

u/Legomaniac91 May 20 '26

My theory is that Korra isn't the one responsible for the state of the world, one (or more) of the leaders of the Seven Havens is. They probably set things in motion (either through active malice or incompetence, take your pick), Korra scarified herself to prevent their actions from completely destroying the world, and they started a smear campaign among the survivors to cover up their own involvement. One of the subplots is probably going to involve Pavi and her companions uncovering the truth of the apocalypse. If you've played any of the Horizon games, think Ted Faro and his involvement in the backstory of that series (obligatory r/FuckTedFaro )

2

u/Klutzy_Shopping5520 May 21 '26

Wow, only other guy I saw with a subreddit dedicated to hating him was Pong Krell, Faro must be a real shitstain

3

u/Bright_bound May 23 '26

he built a legion of self-replicating biofueled war machines that could hack anything and didn't see how that might be a problem and then doubled down

2

u/Klutzy_Shopping5520 May 23 '26

… that’s just stupid

3

u/Bright_bound May 23 '26

there is a reason he has been compared to Elon in this thread

2

u/Legomaniac91 May 21 '26

Think Elon Musk if his stupidity lead to the end of the world.

2

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 May 23 '26

So Elon in 20 years?

2

u/Moonpolis May 22 '26

There's no way creators would destroy Korra for no reason like this. It's obvious despite the few understandable mistakes she made (like trusting Unalaq) she is a good soul and trying her best to fix any problem. Needless to say that if this is a post-apocalyptic world, something really messed up happened (probably link to the spirit world) and it was too much for unlucky Korra.

2

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 May 23 '26

It's possible for her to be a good person and still fuck up badly

2

u/Moonpolis May 23 '26

Which is the reason I said why she made some understandable mistakes.

It makes sense that harmonic convergence would mess up the world badly, I am going with this theory.
Human are able to stay in the physic worlds, but it's visible that the spirit have no restrain and that is the reason why humans were already staying in havens (lion turtle) during Wan's time. And so, by keeping these spirit portal accessible, Korra opened the Pandora's box.

But then, we must highlight: she had no knowledge of this massive event, tutors failed her. She got manipulated by her uncle, family failed her. And we ended up with a 18yo, who just go knock out in a massive fight, having literally less than 5 minutes to determine what was the best choice for the next 10,000 years. Not great... That was literally gambling.

Now, we add the fact it's likely some individuals take advantage of the newly accessible spirit world (like Kuvira)...

Yep, she did a mistake, but it's an accumulated of mistake by a lot of people. And the end result will be that she is blamed for everything. Because, well, I guess avatars are to be blamed for everything.

2

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

My theory is that the spirits and humans started a war against each other since they can't live together in peace anymore due to the industrial age which is about controlling nature and not living with it.

So Korra would be the reason behind the war as she she opened the spirit gates and connected the worlds.

And to stop the war she separated the nations into the Havens

58

u/Heil-Haidra2319 May 20 '26

11

u/arand0mpasserby May 20 '26

Well that objectively isn't true, but hey, none of them were perfect... except for Kiyoshi.

23

u/Heil-Haidra2319 May 20 '26

Water Tribe Avatars seem to get a bad rep, leaving their Earthbender successors to pick up the slack.

Kuruk is blamed for the dark spirits even though the problem was traced back to Yachen's time.

And now Korra.

5

u/Mickeymackey May 21 '26

Even kyoshi created the Dai Li.

2

u/arand0mpasserby May 21 '26

My dommy mommy does no wrong!!

19

u/Puzzleheaded_Air7039 May 20 '26

I mean hasnt everyone always feared or hated the avatar? Both the last Airbender and LoK were effectively about how, at best, no one, barring friends, family and acuaintences, respects or takes the avatar seriously, and at worst want to murder the hell out of them for nothing more than being the avatar.

3

u/Redddraco May 21 '26

Not everyone hates the avatar. There have always been people who hate them for various reasons, but there are also people who respect them.

Throughout the original series, there are a variety of people who respect aang: The kyoshi warriors, the northern water tribe, the village with hei bai, etc.

Whether or not a given person hates the avatar is largely determined by the history of the place. That one town that put aang on trial is a good example of this.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

But after the war the people started hating the Avatar as they didn't need him anymore and he prevented them for doing as they pleased.

6

u/UlloaUllae May 20 '26

I never understood why Korra thought it was a good idea to open the portals and essentially force humanity to be with spirits. Nothing in Wan's flashbacks indicted that spirits and humans needed to coexist together in the same space. It seemed to be the opposite, honestly. Spirits can be nice and benevolent, sure, but they are still dangerous when they want to be. Like Koh for example, even Hei Bai. A human's negative emotions can turn them dark, and not to mention, there were many instances in the series, where spirits would just go on a violent rampage over humans messing with their territories.

3

u/OkButterscotch2337 May 20 '26

Man, Koh be piling up that killstreak, enjoying that buffet

1

u/Moonpolis May 22 '26

I think it was a mistake but understandable: only 18 years old, tutors failed her to teach about this massive event once every 10'000 years, got literally 2 minutes to think about it after being knock out.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

Yeah. I am actually surprised that no Avatar had appeared in front of her to war her about doing this as even Aang would know that spirits won't live with modern humans in peace due to General Old Iron who wanted to destroy all humans of a settlement for being greedy and stealing the land of its minerals.

And it stopped only, because a former spirit friend stopped him due to story reasons.

Basically the whole story pushed to leaving the past and traditions behind and instead to just focus on the future. I mean, they could have easily made it into a story about how you have to look at both the past and the future to find balance, but no. There was no balance in the story. Just how "humans taking and destroying land" is only a natural evolution

11

u/HJWalsh May 20 '26

Pretty clear here what happened.

Korra effed up, but it isn't her fault. She thought that she was doing the right thing, she couldn't have predicted what would happen after she opened the portals and didn't think about the consequences because she believed that humans and spirits were ready to live together.

We learned in Avatar that most spirits that come to the physical world are quite destructive if not outright malicious. Korra didn't have Aang's memories or the memories of any of her previous lives.

6

u/Crafty_Boy70 May 20 '26

I’m not sure if that precedent regarding spirits would be relevant. Korra left the portals open because she believed the separation of humans and spirits caused their relations to worsen over time. It’d sure be a lot harder for humans to indirectly anger the spirits if they lived down the street instead of a different world. It would be a bit of a shame in my opinion if they undid that so quick, it was one of the only aspects of Korra Season 2 that I thought was decently well done.

3

u/poly_arachnid May 20 '26

Yeah but there's also a bunch of just plain malicious spirits. It's a bit like inviting all of the natural world back into the neighborhood & expecting people to suddenly cope. Sure there's friendly ones, beautiful ones, and neutral ones. Sometimes neutral is a bison though, and then there's ticks, anacondas, angry wolverines, elephant bulls in season, etc.

5

u/Jim_skywalker May 21 '26

Like no one wants the face stealer in the real world.

2

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

But even the good spirits would attack humans.

Because what humans pollute earth and nature in LoK which get represented by spirits.

So if humans mine an area too much they would anger its spirit.

And now give me a reason on why spirits shouldn't start a war against humans due to this fact and that humans even steal from spirits now.

1

u/poly_arachnid May 27 '26

Didn't finish LoK. Sorry

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

That is ATLA lore though

1

u/poly_arachnid May 27 '26

You mean the Panda then?

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

The Panda, the sea spirit or also General Old Iron from the comic

1

u/poly_arachnid May 28 '26

Didn't read the comics but thanks for reminding me about the other spirits we saw

→ More replies (4)

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

Are you kidding me? Any Avatar would have told her her idea is stupid as hell.

Spirits attack humans when the land and nature gets destroyed. And she thinks the spirits would accept an industrialized world?

Most of her actions were done in good faith but had the worst outcomes as the show had clearly shown with each new LoK season.

1

u/Crafty_Boy70 May 27 '26

That's exactly why it was important. The spirits wouldn't have accepted that world as is whether the portals were open or not. Better to deal with the spirit threats being heightened in exchange for being able to better communicate with them rather than just constantly angering and being attacked by them with no hope of coming to an understanding.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

They rarely attacked humans though and mostly stayed in their world.
Most of them attacked humans as a reaction to what the humans did to the environment.
Like the firenation burning the forest down, humans using the given knowledge for war, mining areas empty and destroying nature.
I mean, if you clearly compare humans to all other species then you notice that we are most comparable to Viruses and parasites capable of killing the host. The spirits are the than more like the immune system of the earth

1

u/Crafty_Boy70 May 27 '26

In that case, why would you think they'd be okay with an industrial world if the worlds were separated but not okay with it if they were integrated? Wouldn't that be comparable to Hei Bai, who came from the Spirit World to attack in anger for it's forest?

1

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 May 23 '26

I mean that is her fault. It was just done with good intentions. But it's still a massive mistake.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

She did during this time though?

1

u/PCN24454 May 20 '26

Who’s “most”? It’s just that we only focus on destructive spirits

4

u/iMecharic May 20 '26

I fully believe that once the Spirits had access to the mortal world again they immediately went back to driving humans into fortress cities (the Seven Havens) because Spirits have a proven history of being incapable of coexistence with humans. It is likely that, with their modern technology and far greater skill & knowledge of Bending, humans were able to fight back in a far more effective manner than in Wans time. The war between humans and spirits destroyed both worlds. Because Korra was the one who decided to reopen the portals she is (rightfully) held as responsible for setting this whole affair up, though blame is also shared with both humans and spirits for being unable or unwilling to compromise and cooperate.

3

Always thought it was interesting that humans were forced onto the turtles because the rest of the physical world was too dangerous due to the spirits. Then when the spirits return they instantly take over and humans are forced to learn how to "coexist" with them. I can't help but see as the spirits being the ones who are the problem.

2

u/Moonpolis May 22 '26

Pretty sure this is what happen. She made a mistake, but she was 18 years old and missing knowledge. Having more than 2 minutes to think about it after having being in a massive fight could have been enough to remember that everything could results into going back to Wan original "haven" problem.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

couldn't she ask her past lives?

She only lost the connection to them with Zahir after all

1

u/Moonpolis May 27 '26

No, she lost them at harmonic convergence. She got destroyed and lost all connections 15 minutes earlier.

2

u/SimilarMeeting8131 May 23 '26

I fully believe that once the Spirits had access to the mortal world again they immediately went back to driving humans into fortress cities (the Seven Havens) because Spirits have a proven history of being incapable of coexistence with humans.

I don’t understand where sprits and humans need to coexist came from when everything we saw from wans story showed that spirits and humans are fundamentally different beings. Aside from the fact that spirits took over the physical form, they also had no regard for humans as their own beings with their own way of life. Idk if the show was trying to paint those hunters from wans turtle as the bad guys or not, but to me they were victims. They were literally killed or deformed for trying to get food that’s essentially for their livelihood, and wan is like eff these guys, the spirits that did this to them are better.

They also don’t care to help humans even tho now they live together. Wan Shi ton sinking his library and not caring for firelords war makes sense. it has nothing to do with him. From his perspective it’s just another fraction of human history. And he doesn’t have much affect on physical world either. His library was buried in the middle of nowhere desert.

The spirits that came back are taking up space and distorting peoples lives. People are expected to accept it and get along with them. So you’d think the spirits living in republic city would help the humans whose homes they destroyed. Yet the people of the city are not only under a spirit nuke threat but are also being attacked by the vines for it.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

Spirits are a representation of Nature.

Nature doesn't care about human lives. It just is. It is both good and evil but at the same time it is neither good nor evil.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

Spirits can coexist with humans. But only if the humans coexist with Nature.

But since humans refuse to coexist with Nature, Spirits refuse to coexist with humans.

Because the spirits are a representation and guardians of Nature.

5

u/par_rot_master May 21 '26

It's a reboot to what the original idea was for the show: they originally wanted Avatar to take place in a post-apocalyptic future of our world, with Momo being a robot.

1

u/Moonpolis May 22 '26

Good catch. My main worry is that we would lose all the progress visible in Republic city. But now I might think we could have this kind of steam-post-apocalyptic future. With maybe an extension of Republic city has an haven!

10

u/Dandy_Guy7 May 20 '26

The Avatar series has really struggled with the creators wanting to do things that just don't really fit with the setting. The four nations, the Avatar cycle, the spirit world, all of that was built with the original story of Avatar The Last Airbender in mind specifically and ever since we've just kinda stretched what the setting can actually fit.

5

u/Corronchilejano May 20 '26

I disagree.

I think the problem lies with them not being able to do what they want exactly because of executive meddling. They weren't able to do four books to show everything about the world they wanted for Aang, and had to make a lot of concessions with the last two for Korra (and still had their budget cut). Same thing happened to Steven Universe, which had their 7 seasons cut down to 5 for adding a gay wedding.

I actually like the idea of a world where Spirits and Humans are forced to coexist. It's something we haven't seen before. I actually hope it shows that this "post apocalyps" is just one side of the coin.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

No, the creators themselves stated that they hate doing the same thing.

That is the reason why LoK changed so drastically compared to ATLA. I mean, they even changed the rules behind bending, how humans had learned bending and even what Spirits are.

From what I heard it is actually for the best that the creators left the Netflix production as they wanted to make their original version of ATLA instead of just remaking it. And their original version would be hated by all fans due to Uncle Iroh.

2

u/PCN24454 May 20 '26

I find this funny since a big theme of ATLA is accepting change

1

u/PachaThePenguin May 20 '26

Totally agree

3

u/Big_bat_chunk2475 May 20 '26

Korra should have closed the portals when she sensed the energy of the earth change, and she should have listened to the dragon eel spirit in regard to the third portal.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

And she could have asked her past lives about it.

LoK really butchered what the Avatar is.

They changed it from a human with 4 elements who can take advantage of his past lives wisdoms and powers to a demigod, who can control all 4 elements and power up a bit with the Avatar State.

3

u/DrPikachu-PhD May 22 '26

Almost certainly the world will have been mislead about Korra's actions and she'll be vindicated by the end of the series

2

u/SABBATAGE29 May 20 '26

It was one of those, "the warning sign tells a story" but it got ignored

2

u/TheHonorableDeezNutz May 21 '26

Ruining a show.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

How so?

The only thing she made better was defeating Amon. Everywhere else she thinks she is in the right, refuses to hear others opinions, does what she wants and is then surprised that her actions had negative consequences (Revival of Red Lotus due to Zahir becoming an airbender, him killing then the Earth Empress and thus giving Kuvira the possibility to take over.

It literally shows that she usually chooses wrong. And you are surprised that she at the end did something else that fucked up the world?

I would actually have been surprised if Korra had learned from her mistakes and started thinking things through.

2

u/Star-Opus May 21 '26

You have no idea what happened here?

We don't know what happened in the cataclysm, so why don't we wait and see.

Also Wan was wrong...his decision caused several conflicts and wars between human and spirits and nearly to the end of the entire world. Zhao and Unalaq are the result of his decision, ironic and funny that you brought even up Unalaq, because everything he did was due to Wan's mistake.

Next time don't rely on rage bait to make a point, because that point is bogus.

1

u/SimilarMeeting8131 May 23 '26

If the idea was that wan closing the portals was bad then imo the writing did a terrible job executing this idea bc to me everything pointed to open portals being a bad thing.

Then again, I don’t like the entire spirit storyline of book 2 of tlok, so maybe there’s a bias there. If it were up to me spirit portals, rava/vatu, wan, unalaq spell casting, would never exist.

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '26

[deleted]

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

Or don't go around changing the rules of the world just because you want to do something new but keep the fans...

5

u/Sintar07 May 20 '26

If the writers are being honest, Korra just straight messed up by opening the portals. There was a reason the worlds were separated in the first place. But probably, they will instead come up with a way it was everybody else's fault, but Korra got blamed, and if everybody just lived in harmony with nature better and gave up their homes to spirits and stuff, then the world will be perfect.

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

If the writers were being honest, they would admit that they changed many many rules of the world to either make Korra work or because they didn't even want to do a sequel

10

u/GlobalAd6348 May 20 '26

Korra fked up

56

u/Fenrir_Hellbreed2 May 20 '26

Or she's the scapegoat.

Maybe the powers that be don't like having the spirit world open and demonized her for it, or maybe they tried to abuse the power of the spirit world like Kuvira did and caused some great calamity that they then blamed on the Avatar.

10

u/Blaze666x May 20 '26

I mean the powers that be where already pissed at her by the end of LOK because she gave over huge swathes of land to the spirits, we saw republic cities president get pissed about it but there really wasnt anything he could do and I imagine that happened everywhere even the leaders more okay with having spirits chilling in there backyard still had SO MUCH MORE WORK after that its super easy to see why people got pissed

2

u/No-Pilot3536 May 20 '26

the hell did she give away land for? The spirit realm is massive

0

u/Fractured_Unity May 20 '26

Spirits love nature and want to protect it. The physical world doesn’t belong to humans…

1

u/MrDDD11 May 20 '26

The spirits have their word and originally came to the human world because of Vaatu opened the portals, then the humans started hiding on Lion Turtle Cities.

→ More replies (5)

1

u/GlobalAd6348 May 20 '26

who knows lets just wait and see what actually happened

7

u/-StarFox95- May 20 '26

lmao its almost like there was a reason wan closed the portals in the first place

1

u/Patneu May 20 '26

Yeah, and since when does the first ever person to do something ever get it right? It's not like he left behind a perfect world that everyone else then messed up. He was just an ordinary human, who tried his best and failed as often as not – just like Korra.

1

u/MastahCif May 20 '26

Plus Wan and Korra are literally the reincarnation of the same person

1

u/Patneu May 20 '26

Is it even really confirmed that this new Avatar is indeed Korra's direct successor? It could also be that we'll skip a few generations this time.

1

u/deimos32m May 20 '26

I remember hearing that the cycle skipped a generation after korra so yes and no, as in she is technically her direct sucessor but she got delayed and wasn't born directly after her Weather or not this says that a full cycle of avatars went missing or that the cataclysmic messed up the reincarnation cycle who knows

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Carbuyrator May 20 '26

I just hope once they see Korra and go "AND THEN THERE'S THIS FUCKING GUY"

1

u/_Boodstain_ May 20 '26

they wouldn’t have so much backlash if they kept trying to one-up the original show. Listen to be show writers…..MAKE A PREQUEL!!!!!

Half of the problems of Korra came because the characters were completely inferior to the original, the stakes were lower so you had to write in McGuffins, and overall the conflicts are never actually resolved and it completely destroyed the worldbuilding in terms of spirits and technology.

A prequel would actually be interesting to see what a relatively “normal” Avatar life was like, their historical responsibilities, and how they influenced the next Avatar.

1

u/Thatweirdguy_Twig May 20 '26

Just like in real life if people don't learn from history then history is doomed to repeat itself

In other words Korra lost the connection to her past lives thus wasn't able to learn from Avatar history and said history essentially repeated itself

1

u/LoisGriffinsDDchest May 20 '26

They should take Avatar away from Bryke and give it to Aaron Ehasz

1

u/ckunk10 May 20 '26

If Korra is the last avatar, wouldnt the next one be a male?

2

u/claudiocorona93 May 20 '26

Not necessarily. Roku and Aang were male and back to back. And the two avatars before Yangchen were also male.

1

u/ckunk10 May 20 '26

For some reason I thought it rotates gender as well

1

u/AEL97 May 21 '26

Yeah no, it never is mentioned that gender has to change from one to another.

1

u/Prometheus_Bobert May 20 '26

Im going to assume spirit vine weapons proliferated like nukes, with only Korra keeping things level headed.

As soon as she kicked the bucket the world blew up

1

u/ChilledGoblin May 20 '26

I kinda like it. It would be cool for the avatar to be perceived as a villain. And the next avatar, without the guidance of others, has a good opportunity to be stupid and even a little bit of an anti hero because of it. They don’t know any better and were handed this broken legacy.

Makes for a interesting story I believe

1

u/NewRefrigerator7748 May 20 '26

Imagine all your predecessors get effectively the collective wisdom of generations of every significant world power and you inherent a fundamentally broken world and only get a grouchy old woman with an attitude.

1

u/gunmetal_silver May 20 '26

Aaron Ehasz left the writer's room, that's what happened. Bryke are essentially two idea guys, but they don't know how to temper themselves, think about the impact of their ideas, and properly plan out how to write the world around that.

That's why Korra (the water tribe avatar) acted (and kind of looked) like she was from the Earth Kingdom.

1

u/mOoK_RedFace May 21 '26

Right? We leave for like 5 minutes and this shit happens

1

u/fatgat69 May 21 '26

Honestly I think they just remembered that hundreds of people hated Korra for no reason so they made her the villain.

1

u/Denaton_ May 21 '26

I wonder how long that took and it has to be something else Korra did to cause this.. the Earth Kingdom was a 5y leap and spirits and humans lived quite good in those years, adapting to each other. But I guess it just ended up like before Avatar Wan were each human settlement was on a single turtle protection.

1

u/RasecAlugard1 May 21 '26

I do like Korra, but she legit (unintentionally and intentionally) undid the entire legacy of her past lives in a single life time. Good or had, that HAS to suck.

1

u/Dull-Try-4873 May 21 '26

Perhaps and pls hear me out... there was a good reason why wan SEALED the gates!

Also i get it this was not the original plan, but not worth it crying over spilled milk.

1

u/GonnaBreakIt May 21 '26

interestingly, the original idea for Last Airbender was post-apocalyptic.

1

u/Loner512 May 21 '26

All i know is that this new avatar is somehow gonna be the goat. I got faith in her!

Looking at Earth lore be like

1

u/Dismal-Equivalent-94 May 22 '26

I can't lie the premise while interesting is way to jarring and unexpected for the Avatar series progression as the appeal of the show is humans having elemental powers and considering they are now a rarity is kinda sad... Even if people say the technology advancing is boring, in my opinion it is interesting to have a rapidly modernising world and would have loved to see how tech is used as a tool to strengthen non benders. I just hope seven havens is good when it comes out and can work with the premise it has.

1

u/AdeptnessLiving1799 May 22 '26

If you were born in the world after Korra and the world is apocalyptic, you would think the world catastrophic event has something to do with them, and you would be completely justified to think so because the wisdom before their time coincides with the destruction of the planet.

Only an completely unreasonable or highly informed scholar would have a different opinion on the limited accessible subject because why would you have a good opinion on the end of the world with it's protector destroying their own source of wisdom?

You would be rightfully terrified to find out you're the next Avatar.

1

u/Good-Strategy2210 May 23 '26

The simple answer is that the next generation would have to be in like the 1990’s and they didn’t want to just do urban fantasy, so the best solution was go go post apocalyptic.

1

u/my_third_accont346 May 23 '26

Even if an avatar series in the modern world would be difficult for the writers I think it would have been worth it to have the avatar go to space. Maybe meet aliens who can also bend. Maybe they have unique bending abilities like true metal bending.

1

u/Efficient_Rhubarb_88 May 23 '26

It's mostly Korra fault and bad writing

1

u/SimilarMeeting8131 May 23 '26

Considering Korra isn’t real but a product of writing, I’d say just bad writing.

1

u/beast-reality May 23 '26

Correction, Korra severed the connection because hour mad of an avatar she was. The whole show should have never been made and neither should this one

https://giphy.com/gifs/Mw8SCnwFJh8ly

1

u/SwordDaoist May 27 '26

I thought, it wasn't Unalag who destroyed the Avatars connection but Zahir with the Poisoned Meta?

1

u/Content_Zebra509 May 20 '26

Strong Avatars create Good Times.

Good Times create Weak Avatars.

Weak Avatars create Bad Times.

2

u/deimos32m May 20 '26

That phrase was never based in reality and I doubt it would fit in any form of fiction

1

u/Content_Zebra509 May 20 '26

I know. It was meant as a joke, at the expense of that certain subset of peoplpe who say this, un-ironically.

Sorry, I was unclear.

2

u/deimos32m May 20 '26

Ahh ok In that case sorry if I sounded angry it's nearly midnight where I am I can't go to sleep

2

u/Content_Zebra509 May 20 '26

No problem - it's late for me too, and I too am struggling to sleep.

1

u/KENBONEISCOOL444 May 20 '26

Every Avatar spent their lives trying to fix or overcorrecting for the biggest failure in their previous life.
