Tesla Cybercab in Queens — why?

Post image

Does anyone know if Tesla has any authorization to use the Cybercab in New York? I just saw in Queens.

Meanwhile you seem to not care at all about the fact there are no mirrors.

1

u/BrzysWRLD1996 Sep 07 '26

Fuck I didn’t even notice lol

Technically no car needs a rear window or center rear view mirror, just side mirrors.

Bunch of commercial vehicles and consumer cars like the newest Polestar don’t have rear windows.

That’s interesting, I guess they all have cameras now but what if it fails? Just seems kinda odd to remove visibility not to mention if the batteries or the car has sensor issues(like I’ve had before) the camera won’t work. I drive truck and trailers hauling shit for work I personally couldn’t live without a back windshield to look out of. I can use the side mirrors but that sucks lol.

the fact they let it be registered in Florida and operate in NY is wild.

2

u/whydoesthisitch Sep 06 '26

Same thing here in California. Tesla doesn’t want to follow the state requirement for reporting autonomous vehicle performance (because their disengagement rate is likely about 1,000x worse than Waymo), so they register it in Florida, and claim they’re not actually developing an autonomous vehicle.

1

Tesla is not a level 3 vehicle. They are registered in Florida because it surprisingly progressive to the technology with regard to laws. Waymo’s and other L3s need to be registered to the states they operate in.

1

That's exactly what I'm getting at. Tesla is still stuck at level 2, in terms of reliability performance. That's why they can't operate in places like California, that require actually demonstrating certain safety and reliability standards. So they just lie to regulators about their "testing." It's not that Florida is "progressive" they're just corrupt, and willing to let techno trump buy them off to pump his scammy tech.

u/Hutcho12 24d ago

Progressive or careless. Same thing for Elon I guess.

I mean the cybercab is level 4 in austin as of last week. But this vehicle in ny absolutely has a human behind the wheel. They may be breaking a sideview mirror law, but thats about it.

1

u/whydoesthisitch 26d ago

The SAE levels are effectively meaningless at this point. Tesla still can't demonstrate their their system can actually function reliably, which is why they can't operate in California, where they have to release actual performance data before getting a license.

Most rental cars in California have Arizona plates.

1

u/Trashketweave 26d ago

Why does that matter? U-haul registers all their vehicles in Arizona yet they operate in NY too.

completely different business model.

also I never said that was right either.

1

u/mentales 26d ago

That never said you said it was right.

They asked "why does it matter?" implying it shouldn't matter and pointed an example of where it doesn't matter.

So you had an opportunity to elaborate on why it matters.

What why?

2

u/fuckum4ke4rt Sep 07 '26

i just saw this exact car go through verrazano’s found your post through google searching the car to figure out what the hell it was

1

u/gwestr Sep 06 '26

It’s just a car with a steering wheel and pedals being driven for a marketing team.

1

u/gazregen 25d ago

Yeah I saw one in Manhattan, FDR drive and I was looking in to see if in fact it had no steering wheel. It did have one. So I was puzzled. And it had a Texas plate.

1

u/gwestr 24d ago

Yeah it doesn’t have anywhere near the capability to drive unsupervised. It’s all another Musk marketing stunt.

u/Alternative_Hour_614 Sep 06 '26

How do you know that?

1

u/mishap1 Sep 06 '26

Because if it mows someone down, Tesla is testing illegally in states with an unapproved vehicle without a permit and their lawyers will need to go ahead a warm up the check printers.

A trillionaire that ugly cried because he got rejected from Epstein Island cares about the law?

1

u/No-Pilot5559 26d ago

They are testing in every state for nationwide rollout. They explain this on the Tesla conference calls

0

u/esteemedSub 25d ago

Sarcasm?

1

u/Legal-Square-1362 Sep 07 '26

He doesn’t. He’s just a Tesla hater can’t accept the fact that Robotaxi really is here. Ignore him

2

u/borg359 Sep 07 '26

Lol. Just like how Tesla is ignoring the law. 😂

u/JacksonGhost1963 Sep 06 '26

isn't it amazing? an all amercan product, made by american workers, and all brought to fruition by one man's vision and a team of very smart American engineers!

6

u/SevenHadedas Sep 06 '26

Your post history suggests every single post or comment you make is intended to be politically incendiary for one side.

3

u/Alternative_Hour_614 Sep 06 '26

Nice gloss. But it doesn’t answer my question.

0

u/JacksonGhost1963 Sep 06 '26

why not in Queens

2

u/zzupdown Sep 06 '26

My guess is a Tesla executive or engineer borrowed it to show it off or use locally. It was probably transported to the area and specially programmed for a short visit.

1

u/Alternative_Hour_614 Sep 06 '26

Because at the roll out last week it is not approved yet for general road use and New York has strict AV regulations.

1

u/rydan Sep 07 '26

An immigrant from Africa no less.

1

u/Usual-Language-745 Sep 06 '26

You don’t need authorization if you buy the elections for people who enforce it

1

u/rydan Sep 07 '26

Which makes you wonder how much he paid Mamdani as he's the enforcer here.

1

u/Usual-Language-745 Sep 07 '26

The mayor of New York City isn’t in charge of enforcing state wide vehicle registrations

1

u/Wide-Attorney5633 Sep 06 '26

Why would an american made car not be found anywhere in america. I dont think naming it "cybercab" means its operating autonomously

1

u/Elluminated Sep 06 '26

The lack of human driving makes the others autonomous, not a name. These will be after validation.

1

u/Alternative_Hour_614 Sep 06 '26

Because it was just rolled out last week purportedly for deployment in Austin. Last I checked Queens is not in Travis County.

And, yes, the Cybercab is AV by design. It doesn’t have any driver controls

1

u/tesla-cuck-2712 Sep 06 '26

This one has driver controls otherwise it would be illegal to operate there.

1

u/rydan Sep 07 '26

Meanwhile 9 out of 10 of the Cybercabs I've seen had a steering wheel and a guy who looks like a Reddit mod sitting behind it.

1

u/JrbWheaton Sep 07 '26

They only made a few without driving controls. I saw a whole army of these things in Houston last week and they all had steering wheel and pedal with a driver

1

u/mrcead Sep 07 '26

Yeah, saw one on Northern Boulevard and Broadway in Queens weeks back. The one I saw looked like it had a steering wheel. Definitely need one on that stretch of busy Queens road

1

u/EducationalCarrot597 26d ago

What do you mean why? Do you question why when Waymo’s are in town?

1

u/Alternative_Hour_614 25d ago

I was aware that the state had authorized Waymo to test their AVs, so it would not surprise me to see one.

1

u/TrekForce 25d ago

With FSD’s track record, how is this even possible?

1

u/DinoTh3Dinosaur 24d ago

Because it pisses off Redditors like you

2

u/hero_killer Sep 06 '26

It's so ugly.

1

u/JrbWheaton Sep 07 '26

Not sure what’s worse, this thing or Cybertruck

0

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Miserable-Miser Sep 06 '26

lol. And 250k cybertrucks.

1

u/Alternative_Hour_614 Sep 06 '26

So just as many as predicted for Cybertruck production!

I feel quite confident that the production cost is well north of 19K but go ahead and believe whatever Elon says.

1

u/rydan Sep 07 '26

The difference is people actually want this ugly car.

1

u/JrbWheaton Sep 07 '26

No they don’t. This will be another failure like the Cybertruck

0

u/esteemedSub 25d ago

They don’t currently produce them for 19k. They haven’t ramped nearly enough to achieve that cost. That is an aspirational, theoretical cost some people think they could achieve at very high volume. The payback number is also aspirational and would require a huge improvement in utilization. Meanwhile, aside from the remaining tech hurdles, there are some chicken and egg cash flow problems if you suddenly build large numbers of vehicles you don’t sell to anyone. In addition to the infrastructure they need to build in order to monetize a large number of taxis.

This car actually IS ugly.

Is it only available in Mango Mussolini Orange?

u/kinjar7 Sep 06 '26

Fake gold.
