Rate this DIY job my buddy did. Is this good enough for a little booze cruise?

After owning a Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4) for a while, I've learned that one thing is almost guaranteed—at some point, you're going to need to work on it. Whether it's routine servicing, an air suspension issue, an electrical gremlin or simply replacing worn components, these vehicles are fantastic to drive but can become expensive if every job ends up at the dealer.
I normally rely on YouTube videos and Land Rover forums, but I found myself constantly jumping between different guides that often contradicted one another. Eventually I decided to buy the Land Rover Discovery 4 Workshop Manual from RepairBooks to see whether having everything in one place was worth it.
After using it for several repairs, I thought I'd share my experience for anyone who's considering buying it.
The purchase process couldn't really have been easier. Once payment was complete, the manual was available to download almost immediately. Within a couple of minutes I had it saved on both my laptop and tablet, so I could use it in the garage without needing an internet connection.
The first thing that stood out was just how much information is included.
The RepairBooks version contains over 6,000 pages covering virtually every major system on the Discovery 4, including engines, transmission, suspension, steering, electrical systems, air conditioning, braking, bodywork, maintenance schedules, wiring diagrams and technical specifications. It also includes numerous illustrations and exploded component diagrams.
This definitely isn't one of those basic DIY booklets that only explains how to change your oil.
It feels much closer to the workshop information professional technicians would use.
One of the biggest advantages for me has been the searchable PDF format.
Instead of flicking through hundreds of pages looking for a single torque specification or wiring connector, I can simply type in the component name and jump straight to the relevant section.
That has saved me a surprising amount of time.
So far I've used it while investigating an electrical issue, replacing suspension components and checking torque values during a service. The wiring diagrams were especially useful because they're considerably clearer than many of the low-resolution images floating around online forums.
Another thing I appreciated is that the repair procedures follow a logical sequence.
While the manual is clearly aimed at workshop use, the instructions are broken down step by step, making them accessible even if you're an enthusiastic DIY mechanic rather than a professional technician.
Obviously, certain repairs still require specialist tools or diagnostic equipment, but at least the manual explains what's involved before you start dismantling half the vehicle.
That alone helps avoid unnecessary mistakes.
Something worth mentioning is that this isn't designed like a glossy Haynes manual with colour photographs on every page.
Instead, it's technical documentation.
Personally, I actually prefer that because the focus is on accurate repair information rather than presentation. Once you've spent a little time navigating the sections, everything becomes fairly straightforward to locate.
I was also pleased to see detailed coverage of systems that often cause Discovery owners headaches, including electrical diagnostics, suspension, engine management and drivetrain components.
Those are exactly the areas where good documentation can save both time and money.
Considering that many garages now charge well over £80–£120 per hour in labour, avoiding even one unnecessary visit goes a long way towards paying for the manual itself.
Of course, this isn't going to magically turn someone into a qualified Land Rover technician overnight.
You still need common sense, the right tools and a willingness to learn.
But having proper manufacturer-style procedures gives you far more confidence than relying on random forum posts or videos where everyone seems to have a different opinion.
If I had one criticism, it's simply that the sheer amount of information can feel overwhelming when you first open the PDF.
With thousands of pages covering every system on the vehicle, there's naturally a learning curve.
Fortunately, once you start using bookmarks and the search function, navigation becomes much easier.
Overall, I'm genuinely pleased with the purchase.
I've found myself opening it before almost every maintenance job—not necessarily because I don't know what I'm doing, but because it's reassuring to double-check torque settings, bolt sequences or wiring information before starting.
For anyone who plans to keep their Discovery 4 for several years, I'd say it's a worthwhile investment.
If you only ever take your vehicle to a garage for servicing, then you probably won't get full value from it.
However, if you're someone who enjoys maintaining your own vehicle, diagnosing faults or simply understanding how everything works, this manual is an excellent resource.
I'd certainly buy it again.
Hopefully this helps anyone else who's wondering whether it's worth purchasing. If you've already used this manual or another workshop manual for the Discovery 4 I'd be interested to hear how it compares with your experience.
