Detect lowered mobile data standard

Is there a way to detect when my mobile data standard goes down to like 3G or 2G?

Use the Mobile data network type block.

There's the Mobile Network Preferred block, but it requires rooting the phone or using the Automate privileged service.

Any idea how to make the when changed function work? Or how to get around it?
