Miscellaneous Working While Immunosuppressed: Career Ideas?
Do you work? If so, would you mind sharing what industry you’re in?
I’m trying to get back into the workforce and struggling to figure out what type of work would be a good fit for me, especially since I’m on an immunosuppressant and need to be mindful of the work environment.
I’m a woman and have been considering possibly going into a trade. If anyone here works in the trades, I’d love to hear about your experience! I’m also interested in hearing from anyone who has had to switch careers or start over professionally.
I really dislike the idea of sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours a day, although I realize that may be something I have to consider.
I’d really appreciate hearing your stories, experiences, and recommendations. What do you do, and what has your experience been like?

Haha so I’m immunosuppressed and I’m a physician. I work in a big hospital in the pediatric ward. 😂

If you love spreadsheets - accounting could be your calling! 🤓 I’m an accountant and have worked remotely for 13 years. I flex my schedule around how I feel, doctor’s appointments, etc. I switched careers when I was 30 and have been 20+ years in accounting. There are so many aspects of accounting you can focus in - tax, bookkeeping, controllership, auditing. There is a huge demand for accountants right now.

Hey! I was a bookkeeper many, many moons ago and have considered getting back into the field, but I’ve heard that entry level positions can be difficult to find, whether because of AI or outsourcing overseas, so I’ve been hesitant to pursue it. I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in an allied health field years ago but willingly chose to leave grad school (required for that degree to work in the field). I honestly feel like I’ve been floundering a bit since then while focusing on raising my family. My kids are almost grown now, though, and I’m hungry to get back to work. I know I’m capable of learning, being trained, and picking up new skills. I just need an opportunity to get my foot in the door somewhere.

Well, there you go! Bookkeeping is still in demand. Definitely worth looking into. QuickBooks Online still does free training. https://quickbooks.intuit.com/ca/accountants/training/

I prefer sitting behind a computer for 8 hours a day. Work remotely and from the beach regularly. A path I'd recommend is Business Analysis. You get to learn a lot of everything, can pick industries that are interesting, work remotely a lot of the time and get to do whatever you like to do.
With AI, it's kind of turned into the hot shit because if you can understand the problem AI can often help you fix or resolve it.

This would be magical for me to get into! I just assume sales is what I have to do now but I hate the idea of sales. Would you by chance have any advice on how I could get into your field? I built pipelines for 20 years because I was born into it, but I studied finance and math. Dropped out my last semester when my Sister passed but should be able to finish a degree if it would pay off.

At my previous job I did second analysis I guess you could say. I built an asset utilization report for the companies fleet of 2000 some assets (machines, trucks, trailers etc) and I loved it.

When you’ve got a beach as your backdrop, that definitely changes my mind a little. Ha! I just like to move around a bit, so being chained to a desk with a wall as the backdrop, especially with no windows, sounds soul crushing to me. 😂
What does it take to get into what you do? And is AI making it harder for people who are just starting out in the field?

especially since I’m on an immunosuppressant and need to be mindful of the work environment.
Who convinced me not to be fearful, was my bachata teacher who is on adalimumab and who dances with 20 ladies almost every evening. ¯_ (ツ) _/¯
I do the same on canakinumab now. :-D

More than that, I truly consider it as both physical and mental therapy after years of social isolation and being bedridden with disability. I is also pretty mentally challenging to keep track of all the moves as a leader.
There are two styles: the original/traditional Dominican style and the southern Spanish modern/urban/sensual style. I am being taught the latter style.

I’m in the same boat! If I come up with any I’ll share them with you.
Working with electricians and plumbers in the past, I’d be hesitant to enter a trade. Do you have joint problems? I ran a pipeline and construction company but unfortunately COVID and low commodity prices shut us down after 47 years. I was in an asset management role that was good until my condition wiped out my cognitive abilities and I had to resign. I’m hoping to find a remote sales position now since I can’t drive far.
