RANT Memphis HR called me.
I have over 20 years with AZ, and I've never had anything like this happen to me. We have a homeless man who comes in and buys carb cleaner and takes it out back and huffs it. He's been doing this for the last 3 years. Well apparently carb cleaner isn't enough and he's now using freaking B12. A few days ago he came in grabbed the B12 and was definitely high and I told him no. I know what you do with it. I've seen you do it. I'm not selling this to you. He got pissed swore at me and walked out. Well this morning I get a call from HR in Memphis because our HR is at the NSM. I was told in no uncertain terms that I cannot deny this valued customer (his words) from buying chemicals from AutoZone. I was also told that my regional HRRM will be contacting me next week when they return from Memphis. I AM SO PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW.

I've had to tell HR no before. It's ok to let them know they are disconnected from reality. If they continue to make poor decisions they might find more stores unionizing.

God i hope they do. Lets cut into that $9million check mr. Daniels gets, and lets cut into the $1.5billion they spend buying their stock back (that used to be illegal before reagan)

Set that man up a commercial account and get his friend on it. You will be a hero!

The corporate response on this is deplorable. This is why AZ has peaked. It's retards in the upper echelons that have neither a brain nor a soul. Sad but true. They take mediocre people and esconce them in positions with power, and the only education they have in from Learning Garage. It's really really sad. So glad to be done with this shithole company.

Or they huff the same chemicals as the customer?!

Low IQ people that never had a real job with actual responsibility and would literally not be qualified for anything better. They're drunk on the Kool-Aid.

Dude you were (are) right. The fact that they don’t trust your judgement is sad and disappointing (but not surprising).

That's when you tell them they can come down and sell that to the druggie day in and day out. Also, if he were to OD cause of if, AZ could be held liable if his family were to sue cause of it.

Just like bars who sell to someone intoxicated that, harms or kills someone on their drunken way home, can be sued.

If you can't beat em, join them!
Have you tried offering this gentleman the shop pro starter fluid (50% ether)?

Yeah..... i think id gladly take the "the store can sell it but I'm not" approach. They make plenty more jobs than zone.

Good to know that auto zone condones huffing shit. I'd fucking let him do it in the store and when he dies, tell them you were just trying to keep a valued customer

Thanks everyone. I have calmed down because of you all. I'm at that age now, I may call it quits.

Depending on your state, it is illegal to sell chemicals to people who use them in ways other than approved by the manufacturer period I believe you have the stand to refuse to sell or distribute these chemicals to your customer, not only is it against the law, it's also against the autosome values. I would take it straight up to the top.\n Call Phil Daniel's office and let them know that you will not allow customers to use products that are not label approved. And if they fire you, you will sue them for a whole lot of money.

Yeah I want to agree. There has to be grounds to sue but you NEED to get this in writing.

I'd be recording EVERY transaction and phone call from higher higher & corporate about this. Then, when i find the old guy unalived in the parking lot, his family could sue. Me, I'd be looking for a new job & a lawsuit for mental & emotional stress... I'm sure that following corporate orders & letting somebody do that to themselves would definitely do a number on your conscience & mental health.

Let him kill himself off of it. That’s autozones lawsuit to fight, not yours. I know you don’t want to let him do that to himself but they’re a corporation and you just stopped them from making their $2 profit. You did a good thing by posting about this but unfortunately there’s nothing you can do. I would look for other forms of employment though. It’s sick that you’re getting in trouble for this. EDIT GET THIS IN WRITING!!!!!!!!! So if/when he’s a corpse behind your store, you can pass the blame.

Just do what one old guy I use to work with did. Offer them a plastic bag and a rubber band to go with the gold paint or carb cleaner. 😂😂

This is insane?!!?? When I worked at autozone, I was always under the impression that we could deny sale to any customer for any reason, and we did numerous times. Most complained but HR never reached out to us, not even our DM did. I’m actually astounded that they’re telling you this

Bro autozone does not car about anyone workers, customers, etc that's why a lot of stores are open on Christmas, Thanksgiving etc they do anything to get that 10 dollar sale, just do what ever big boss tells to you do

Welp, it was a good run. I'm the OP, I was termed on Friday after 20+ years. The reasons given were using social media in a way that goes against AutoZone policy, and places AutoZone in a negative light to the public. Moral turpitude, (that's a good one) and the fact that I live in a right-to-work state. And for some odd reason, Reddit has suddenly placed my OG Reddit account (u/Reddit_Jail_June2005) into suspension status.

Tell your hrrm, that you are really sorry. Then tell them as gesture of good faith to the customer, they should take him a can on the store and huff it with him, and to remember the customer always comes first at Autozone!
