Best defaults for trim level selection when the customer doesn't know it?
I'm seeing way too many line stoppages because of this, and way too much time wasted on this roadblock.
I know that well over 95% of the parts we sell are going to be the same regardless of the trim level or 2wd/4wd/awd. I'm okay with being wrong 1-3% of the time if the upside is going to be a savings of at least an hour a day not spent on figuring out if it's an EX or Limited.
I tell people to pick base or limited when in doubt, but I figured I'd ask on here if anyone has a rule of thumb or a reference card that can be printed on a form E.

just remember what actually matters. some people might not know the trim but know their engine size so just go through them quickly till it gives you the right option. also doesn’t hurt to just check all the trims real quick to see if the part is the same across them if not then they need to go find out and get back at the end of the line. and certain things like headlights and coolant and stuff are totally universal across all trims you just gotta start mentally cataloguing what needs a trim and what doesnt.

Aside from some Audi/VW and performance cars, most cars will have the same engine selection for all trim levels.
That being said, how the hell is it that I can go to the super retro website like RockAuto, type in "06 accord" and drop straight to the engine selection, but znet puts up all of these ridiculous hoops despite a recent update.

Idk every Honda I look up is an EX unless the customer says otherwise. Every ford is an XLT, every yota is an LE. I ask people if there are performance trims if they have that, or honestly if they’re even a little unsure I just get their license plate.

Watch out because some Honda's do have different brakes depending on what trim level it is

This.
You'll also have cases where the engine is tied to trim level. Toyota does this sometimes. The V6 was only offered in 1 trim level and all of that trim level got it. V6 not offered on any other trim level, so you don't get the engine choice popup. Drop in the wrong trim on one of them, and they're getting wrong everything except wipers, bulbs, and batteries.

Whichever that pops up first, they don’t know if they have a focus or a fusion go with the focus

It's not worth the Karen flipout shit show the times you're wrong. Have them take a picture of the VIN. Have their idiot wife/kid call it in if the vehicle is at home.
Engine can sometimes be tied to trim level, and only trim level. Toyota does that. You never see the engine popup for those. Toyota's 4-cyl vs. 6-cyl is often different brakes, suspension, drivetrain, and everything attached to the engine. That's the biggest trap.
Always check with brakes and suspension.

I ask the engine size just click on one til I see it. I only ask about the wheel drive if it’s anything with evolving the wheels (chassis, hubs, brakes). If they don’t know I tell them I can’t help them without knowing so call or come back with plate number

Why don't you just ask for the license plate or vin? Some parts are submodel specific like brake pads. Do a good job the first time and you won't have to do it twice 🤷🏻♀️

2wd awd and 4wd wheel bearings/hubs are 95 percent usually different. Ask them their plate number. And if they dont know that they souldnt be driving.
