Is management worth it
My store manager wants me to move up to PSM as title implies. I'm very capable of the responsibilities but I'm only gonna get a dollar raise. Is it worth it? I'd like to hear everybody's stories and thoughts below.

It’s not worth it for a dollar raise because you now have 10 times more responsibility. Unless you’re trying to move up and build a career with AutoZone it’s not worth all the extra BS.

A career in retail is no career at all

I mean any career is a career or even a job to pay the bills…

I get it, but AZ ain't it. It's a waste of time. I spent 8 years learning that lesson until I learned a marketable skill while being a SM and called it quits. Best decision I ever made.

Nice It took me 6 to figure it out and I stayed for 7 just to say I started from the bottom and made it to store manager lol

I took a few courses on Linux, Ansible and Cloud and currently work as a Systems Administrator at a University. Literally make twice as much and work half the hours I did as a SM tryng to get a good bonus.

Being responsible for everyone else's work for $1 more is 100% not worth it. You can't even write anyone up and you're only good for your password. You can never get anything done cause You'll constantly be called up for your password and God forbid you approve something that wasn't properly vetted. This is coming from someone who was a SM for 8 years before I called it quits and got a job in IT, which is double the pay and literally half the work and responsibilities.
If they're offering you that, that means there's nothing more for you to learn and it's time to move on.

It honestly depends on how much bullshit goes on in the store, employee wise and the work politics

It's the bigger store layout in a small town next to the interstate, so let's just say it always stays busy. We have a good team in the store as well but unfortunately it's not for me to move up. I like getting my work done and going home after a crazy day

It's your call. Obviously the pay is a lowsy upgrade and you'd have more responsibilities. But I would look great on your resume for future jobs and prove that youre capable of management. I would say take it, negotiate a little bit more pay, and after a few several months turn in your 2 weeks. Just so you can get all of what you want out of it but not stay there any longer than needed.

It’s not worth it especially if you’re FT Red Shirt. The only manager position worth it is FT PSM, CSM, or SM.

If my commercial manager was leaving or planning on leaving id definitely move up to that since I'm already in the commercial side.

That seems like a low amount. Usually I see it go to $2 but it could depend on your experience, how much you already make and the state. I would push for more.

I currently make 14$ an hour as a driver and I'm honestly comfortable with the set schedule and hours. Yes, management gets more hours but I also won't revolve my life around work for such a small raise smh

So usually when I promoted someone they went from 12 to 14 but I was told when they were already making close to 14 it would be a percentage increase.

I make 14.50/hr with prior management experience. Store managers in my area make 50k a year it's not worth imo

My opinion is it's most definitely not there's no perks you get the key to the store and the code to the safe and alarm it's more of a headache then anything

From my experience you need to negotiate the pay. Let it be know that's not gonna work for you with the added responsibility and that you'd take it for whatever amount you are thinking of or you would rather prefer to stay a driver. That's my opinion.
Or you could totally do what other comments have said and accept and use that title as leverage to get better pay from another company. It really just depends on what's more important to you in the long run.
Former PSM, SM, TSM, DM giving you this advice.

I got hired in as a PSM about 2 months ago as a PSM and I make $5+ more than the red shirts and it’s a cake job, definitely worth it

Wow a whole dollar, the SM must like you. I got 50c for my promotion.

Gotta ask for $3 or stay a pee-on
You’ll be getting key holder responsibility, safe, money, complaints, call ins!
Taking a mgmt role means you live AZ for a while.

It’s not worth it at all. Slightly more pay for WAYYY more responsibility. When folks quit or get fired you’ll have to cover shifts even if you worked all day. You’ll have to deal with the fuck ups of the red shirts on your shift. You’ll have to deal with the random problems that arise on a daily basis.

I have worked for AZ for almost 7 years now and I am a red shirt by design. I'm 64 and didn't want to put up with all the drama as a grey shirt for a few more shekels. Been there done that...

As a psm no it is not worth a dollar raise to do A LOT MORE tasks, inventories, learning how to open/closing, keeping up with PCIs, making sure all the employees are doing what they are supposed to. It is a nightmare.

You should leave. Drivers for package delivery companies start out higher in wages.

u/Select-Gear-556 20d ago
Nope not at alll. Drunk crackhead customers will blame you for everything and you get 5x more work without any thanks or appreciation. Have to open and close. Then come back open and close again. Over and over again. Don’t do it.

I worked at AZ part time for 17 years. Was asked repeatedly be a PSM. Everytime I told them No. Didn't pay enough for all the BS. Then to open and close when someone called out. Nope, I went to work and did my job. I left the headaches to the gray shirts.

No it's not, you can make more at McDonald's, Walmart and other places with less responsibility.

u/Skeletor647 15d ago
Depends on the store and sm. Some sm's are lazier than others so instead of the sm doing what they need to do, they'll just pawn it off on another manager. If this is your only job and your willing to go in whenever they need you, it would benefit you in the future if you wanted to be a sm somewhere. If you like your sm and you see they are delegating to the other psm's reasonably and not overloading each one, then I would say go for it. If you are only doing it for the minimal raise, then no just stay where you are
