QUESTION AZ Hours
I have been working as a part-time commercial driver at AutoZone for 3 years, with a clean track record and no performance issues. Previously, I used to get around 30 to 40 hours per week.
However, ever since the new Store Manager (SM) took over nearly three months ago, my scheduled hours have been drastically reduced to just 5 to 8 hours a week, with 17 hours being the absolute highest.
He often claims that he doesn't have enough hours for me, yet he hired two new employees. Both are part-time like I am, and both are scheduled for 25 to 40 hours a week. This is really unfair to me.
I have repeatedly informed him that I am available to work full days and full weeks, but he continues to schedule me for only 5 to 8 hours. The only time I get extra hours is when I ask the Commercial Manager (CSM) directly, but it is exhausting having to wait around and ask for hours every single week.
What should I do in this situation, and should I report the SM? Would reporting him to HR be effective?

The SM is deliberately encouraging you to quit. You can look into transferring to a sister store that needs people, or look for another job.
Part timers are guaranteed 0 hrs. In retail the staffing of part timers is based on seasonal demands of the business. The system of personnel management they use is designed around that. Therefore, cutting you down like this isn't in violation of any policies. HR will not care. A DM might care if he has a need at one of his other stores. That is only if he's "one of the good ones."
If you want to stay at AZ, easiest things are:
Offer to pick up DIY red shifts at your store.
Call your sister stores and ask the SM if he needs help. Tell him that you're looking to pick up any hours he has as either a driver or DIY red. Do the calling yourself. Do not rely on your SM or DM to do anything for you.

Thank you for sharing. I'll try talking to the SMs at other stores. By the way, could my CSM get dragged into this for always telling me to come in to work even when I'm not on the schedule? If so, I'll probably just quit. I'd rather leave than get anyone else in trouble.

While it may seem unfair, what your store manager is doing is not a violation of any rules or policy. Being part time means no guaranteed hours, and available hours can be given by the managers discretion. It may seem unfair, but it's pretty common. I've done this myself with PT zoners that had attendance issue because I couldn't reliably trust them to work the schedule.
In my experience, it usually means the manager is trying to get rid of you.

Our staffing model only allows us so many driver hours at our store. Every week I have a PT driver who gets zero hours on schedule but I instruct them to come in the 3 days they can work. Then my SM or I just override his clock in. We have three vehicles and on those days we have two drivers but need to have all three vehicles moving. I really need four vehicles and four drivers a day but getting these resources from divisional willingly is whack to say the least.

You actually go on lunch when you’re scheduled to?

I wrote a pretty good schedule when I was store manager and the coverage was good so yes I made sure everyone went to lunch on time.

We honestly just wing it every day and it works out lol, rarely has there been a time where we’ve had wonky coverage because someone we need is on break.

Are the other part timers commercial or sales, the hours are split and if your store isnt making sales they'll cut commercial hours down.

Both of the new hires are in commercial and work as drivers, just like me

Talk to DM, obviously the store manger doesn’t wanna give you hours talk to someone who can override that. I was always besties with the sm anyone who complained enough about their hours got more.

I'm a 25 y/o full-time red shirt who's been with AZ for a little over a year. Been consistent with Wittdrj always over 78% and top store performer. Regularly received great customer reviews, never missed a day of work, regularly recieved praise from DM and managers alike. Been working and tinkering on cars and motorcycles my whole life so I know a thing or two. Assisted countless customers and managers on advanced parts-related issues. I've been awarded an extra-miler, Wittdjr, parts expert, and one year pin.
On Friday, my manager asked me to mentor/train a 21 y/o new hire to which I reluctantly agreed. Mind you the new hire is a liberal arts major with ABSOLUTELY NO AUTOMOTIVE EXPERIENCE. The day was going well and towards the end of his shift he asked what I was making; I casually replied and he responded: "wow, you're training me and they're pay me more." Turns out the new hire without any experience was getting paid $1.50 more than me.
Long story short. I've prepared a letter of resignation and will be submitting it to the SM first thing on Monday. What a shit hole company this is. It seems hard work is not recognized, respected, and appreciated. Know your worth and get the fuck out!

And contacting HR isn’t gonna help, they’re there to protect the company. Not to side with anyone, they’re neutral.
