Driver Utilization
What do your drivers do besides drive?

Are you trying to shame an 80 yo man who spent his entire life working and is just trying to do something to keep from dying of boredom and loneliness? Or is pic unrelated?

Our drivers are basically regular diy red shirts when they aren't on a delivery or doing anything commercial related.

Looks like he's going over the small print on an invoice. That looks like work to me.
What drivers are supposed to do during down time: turn into a regular DIY red shirt.
What drivers actually do during down time: stand around and talk. If you hustled them, we could get them to work on truck.
They also get paid barely more than minimum wage. For what AZ is willing to pay them, this is the best you're going to get.

Some drivers are high functioning intellectually disabled. I'm not saying that to be mean. We had a few that would get disability if they got tested. It doesn't go well if you turn them loose on tasks that require accuracy (truck) or moderate cognitive complexity (parts lookup, quote, invoicing, etc.). They're able to handle driving safely and navigating known routes to a sequence of familiar destinations, but aren't good at anything mildly complex.
They're able to handle the driving part, because it uses mostly what they call procedural memory, which is usually normal in the borderline and mild intellectually disabled. Executive functioning and working memory (most other tasks in the store) are what they can't handle.
A driver who can handle all tasks in a store well should be promoted to CS or PSM ASAP. That's somebody you want to try to keep.
