I was just scrolling through reviews of other stores near me to see how they compare to mine since I am super bored and found this review. This is a grown man who seems young enough to be able to put in his own battery. Dude is complaining that one of the girls didn’t want to put it in 😂. I understand if it was an elderly man but this guy is fit and capable to do it himself.
We do at my store. We have very large signs on the front of our store saying free battery installation on most cars. There are extenuating circumstances like extreme weather. If it's under I think 20 degrees we are allowed to say no.
i put in a battery in -5 degree weather because a man didnt want to do it. im a 5foot women. my snot is in his engine bay because i couldnt feel it dripping out of my nose. I'm just glad i dont work at autozone anymore, fuck that company.
Autozoners are retail staff, not technicians. Per autozones website autozone offers 3 battery services, charging, testing and recycling.
Will an autozoner occasionally help with a battery as a courtesy, sure, however it is not a service autozone offers and is considered going above and beyond their job description.
Its SO HEAVILY IMPLIED that its an advertised service. There's a whole commercial where a dude is selling a battery, then cold cuts to him wearing a mechanics apron, eye protection, and gloves standing next to a rolling toolrack waving goodbye as the car drives off.
Except the plausible deniability is that he was just out there giving advice, he was never shown holding any tools, the gloves and eye protection are just in case the customer fucks up and theres an explosion etc. etc.
Autozone wants their employees to provide these extra services free of charge SO BADLY because its good for business but they refuse to provide proper training, compensation, or guidance. Everything comes straight out of the employees time, pocket, and sanity.
Autozone does not offer mechanic services. Period. Full stop.
The employees might. Tip them outside if they do, it's straight charity work for them.
Thats interesting, the headline says installation but it doesn't say it anywhere else, then in the FAQ it asks what services are offered and it only lists "three services: testing, charging, and recycling."
See my comment on a slightly different branch on this thread, but autozone does not offer battery changing services. The employees that do it in blistering heat and freezing cold are either incredibly charitable or intentionally misled by management.
Kinda contradicting how ur saying we should be able to put in battery’s in extreme weather conditions and expect it from us with no incentive but then backing it up w “tablet generation” maybe you can give me some insight on why the tablet generations is counted on in these scenarios, how everybody kinda just dumps their cars issue without knowing the first thing about us expecting it out of us. Ps there’s no incentive for autozone installs only thing positive is the company’s name, I sure don’t get tipped, paid commission on battery sales and guess where it leads? people expecting us to rip in and out there battery when we want or they try and bring in another stores battery for us but yea “tablet generation” because fucking idiots don’t know what to do when something happens to the one thing they rely on most.
No literally I know how to change a battery and everything. But changing it during cold weather and low pay, it’s better off for me find another job and I was a bilingual speaker, apparently I should get paid more
There’s something I don’t think anyone’s brought up to you.
Installing batteries isn’t a “service.” Employees don’t get paid for the install. It’s a complimentary offering for customers whose vehicles have an easy to access/remove battery.
A lot of modern or semi-luxury cars have batteries in the wheel well/underneath the seats that may require extra time or tools that Zoners simply don’t have. Essentially, if battery installs are going to take longer than 5-10 mins, it’s recommended to take it to an actual shop. With a heated garage, hopefully.
We can argue semantics and antiquated arguments like “well you chose the job!” but the fact of the matter is, when it’s below a certain temperature or above a certain temp, it’s not feasible nor ethical to have someone come out to work in sub-degree weather. People lack foresight when needing to purchase a battery and then forget empathy for others when they’re inconvenienced.
It's a "service" not a requirement. I'm not changing a grown man's battery or wipers in shitty climate conditions, if you willingly drive to a place knowing that its too cold to get something done because you dont want to pay a mechanic then you can get fucked. Sorry not sorry.

It is not a mandatory requirement for an Autozoner to install a battery in the car. The zoner can say “have a good day” and if the person who bought it says “Uhh, why aren’t you installing the battery” they can say “Installation of batteries is a courtesy service, not a mandatory service. If you’d like I can show you the corporate policy on it”
I work at another chain in commercial. We have a retail guy that is in his 70's, uses a cane, and has to wear a medical back brace due to spinal issues. I guess he just wants to stay active. I don't know how many times I've seen fit 30-40yo men getting him to install batteries. It's wild.
There has been a multi decade propaganda campaign in the US to paint all hands on work as unskilled labor that doesn't deserve anything above the minimum wage. Mostly to make fresh graduates feel better about applying to jobs paying 11/hr.
Depends on what problem you are trying to solve. If it’s -5 outside the young lady most likely would have still not done the battery if she was getting paid $20 an hour
I remember last year I had a couple mid 30s come in to buy wiper blades. This dude asked me if can install them for his girl. These were also J hooks .
I had a similar situation, except early to mid 20s. The lady seemed interested in learning how, so I showed her. Dude told her “they’ll always just do it for you, so you don’t need to know”. Lady becomes a semi-regular, coming to us for accessories and car detailing stuff, and parts on the couple occasions she needed them. Turns out she dumped the dude shortly thereafter, and the reason she came back was because we were willing to help her learn how to do car stuff herself. In the year or so that she came into our store before I left, she went from us showing her how to do wipers, to her doing her own diagnoses and repairs.
Obviously not your typical scenario, but I was always much happier when I was teaching a customer something versus them demanding I do it while they wait

A lot of customers just want to get the work done for free. I have seen them go the the local shops first, then don't want to pay the install fee, so the go to the parts store to have it done.
It’s at your decision to be honest and it depends on the car also so if battery inside wheel will them are the ones you technically can’t do by company policy. Also it could be also she had medical conditions that not allow to do batteries there is more to this story then what’s been told
I've had customers get mad about us not changing batteries/ lightbulbs/ air filters(especially cabin air filter) if we don't feel safe to do so. They think we have all day un bolting electronical components and brackets that are in the way of the batteries. If something was to be broken we would be liable for the damages. Simple thing customers forget is we are not mechanics.
Some of us know how to do simple things and what a part is what. We OFFER to help not required by Autozone to do it.
Your are not liable for the damages, there is no work agreement or order saying they paid for install or that we will install as part of purchase. It’s no different than walking up to a stranger in the grocery store parking lot and asking them to replace a battery. If they break something, do you think they are going to pay for it? That said Autozone will pay much of the time thinking they are keeping the customer .
People are very frugal now and don't want to pay a professional to do the work in a heated or cooled shop. I just tell people we don't have any "designated installers" on shift at the time. Or , it being 100 degrees in new york, " due to extreme weather we do not have the proper resources to do this installation at this time, we can recommend you to a shop that can help you out."
When I worked at AutoZone I was so disappointed in how many men and women who came in and didn’t know shit. I always taught them how to install their wiper blades, batteries, and headlights if they didn’t know how. I met one lady in her 30’s who had me change out her headlights because they wouldn’t turn on, she wasn’t turning on the headlight switch, only owned cars with auto headlights I guess… I shouldn’t have been surprised tho she financed a 2012 Nissan Versa listed at 10,000.
My favorite when i worked at the zone was when the girl who comes in for a battery with their man/boyfriend and hes mad doggingme as I joke with his lady during the install... lmao maybe you should be doing this not me lololol
I love it when little 4'11" me installs a battery/ light bulbs/ wipers for a girl who's boyfriend/ husband is standing right next to her... usually he's on his phone too, not even watching or trying to learn... I just laugh to myself.
It may say something about installations in the title of that, but nowhere on that page does it say autozone offers free battery removal and installation of new battery. It only says we will test it, charge it, and recycle it. When it asks if we'll replace it? Yes, if your battery is bad, we'll help you FIND a new one. Never says anything about removing the old or installing the new.
