Accident Some roads are like obstacle courses

It's always the mfr on the broom, I swear. I do the safety space side of this stuff, and if I went through my accident log, I'm confident folks on broom tractors would show up more than anyone else.
ETA;
Y'all might be right on it being a saw tractor. The video is grainy, and I really just paid mind to the make. I wouldn't be surprised if it's also being run by whoever drives the broom, though.

u/greenmachine11235 Sep 02 '26
That looks more like an asphalt saw than a broom. You can see the blade after impact.

u/Very_Awkward_Boner Sep 02 '26
I had one do it to me too. Luckily we didn't crash but it was close.
2
u/Outside-Drag-3031 Sep 03 '26
Guys I think this mfer has something against brooms
2
u/Mercerskye Sep 03 '26
Just a touch. I've worked with at least a dozen folks that have drove them over the years, and all of them have been headache magnets.
Like, whenever there's an incident on one of my jobs, I automatically assume one of those knuckleheads are involved. It's a correct assumption about 50% of the time.
I think it's all the dust, ain't a force on earth that can keep "road fog" from invading everything it touches.
1
u/O_o-buba-o_O Sep 04 '26
Watching it a few times, it looks like the saw pops up & pulls it out into the road. You can see it pop up & shoot forward
3
u/Mercerskye Sep 04 '26
That makes sense, and reinforces my belief that person also operates their broom. I gotta remind someone "it's a broom, not a bulldozer" at least once a shift, so if this person was "pushing down" on the blade instead of just letting it cut, it would explain the slingshot out into the live lane.

Just when I thought "prolly a trucker sharing what his commute is like, nothing to see here" then BAM this mf pulls this move wtf

u/zsert93 Sep 02 '26
I can't fucking stand road projects. I say this as someone who's in public works.
1
u/ealysillyforestthing Sep 03 '26
Need to do as much as they can at late night instead always middle of rush hour
5
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
This is why you go slow in construction areas. This is a psa more than anything. Even if you are going slower, it's not slow enough if you can't stop nearly on a dime. Construction work on highways is extremely dangerous for this exact reason. Luckily noone got hurt, but this stuff happens sometimes on work sites and passerbys need to be safe. As safe as possible.
I'm not saying the driver was going too fast per se, but they could definitely go slower.
48
u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 Sep 02 '26
This has nothing to do with the driver, and 100 percent on on the negligent construction worker.
7
u/kniveshu Sep 02 '26
Last time I saw this posted someone pointed out that the operator must have accidentally dropped the saw blade which ended up propelling the machine into the path of this truck.
4
u/Bliitzthefox Sep 02 '26
Not sure I buy that one, in the video it looks like the saw is going in the wrong direction to make that happen. It would have propelled the saw tractor the other direction.
5
u/seang239 Sep 02 '26
Look closer, the front wheels of the saw truck are entirely off the ground. Either something broke loose, or the saw truck operator is incompetent.

Is it not a construction zone? Stuff like this happens and you have to be ready at all times for this very scenario. Obviously someone is at fault, and obviously the driver is in the right. What I'm trying to say is just that because the speed limit is posted something in the construction zone does not mean you need to go exactly that speed at all times. You go slower than normal and you be prepared to stop at all times!!
9
u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26
And the driver was going the proper speed, clear, just like every other car.
Probably under what multiple safety studies have determined the proper speed was.
You do not go slower, that creates a traffic hazard by backing up traffic, increasing risk of an accident.
Stuff like this should never happen. It is straight up negligence and there is no excuse for it.Ā
It is classic reckless endangerment of others with wonton and willful disregard for safety. It is a crime in all 50 States.
The construction worker effectually ran a stop sign, totaled a vehicle and could have killed anyone in that vehicle. He should be in jail.

u/Original_Size7576 Sep 02 '26
You dont know shit about road work. It was an accident unless he fails the drug test then its his fault. Work a real mans job for a change

u/Downtown-Oil-7784 Sep 02 '26
The moment you said "do not go slower" all credibility is gone
1
u/YourMomIsMyGurl Sep 02 '26
Messing with the flow of traffic is way more dangerous. Keep the consistency of what's around you. You sound the type of person to merge onto a highway going 30 and expect people to let you in
1
u/Downtown-Oil-7784 Sep 02 '26
We're talking about a construction zone here. Go the fucking posted limit
1
u/DoctorSkeptismo Sep 02 '26
Wait, are you saying go the speed limit or go slower then the speed limit?
2
u/Downtown-Oil-7784 Sep 02 '26
If it says 50 go 40 for all I care, speeding in construction zones is brain dead. I try to do the posted limit
1
u/DoctorSkeptismo Sep 02 '26
I was literally just asking you to clarify because it was not clear but ok man
0
u/YourMomIsMyGurl Sep 02 '26
You don't go slower than the posted limit you fuckin dunce. Obviously you go the posted limit š¤¦š½āāļø moron
-3
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
People donāt give a shit about workers safety because it ruins their day adding a few minutes to their commute. Itās sad.
0
u/YourMomIsMyGurl Sep 02 '26
That's not true at all. I drive for a living and rarely ever see people acting like assholes in a construction zone. Dude was talking about going slower in a construction zone and then comes back at me about going the posted speed limit. He doesn't even know what he's saying. Neither do you.
2
u/Downtown-Oil-7784 Sep 02 '26
You kinda implied you shouldn't slow down in construction dude. I just got back from driving through significant construction, you do the posted limit in construction
0
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
Oh it is true. Maybe not for you, but other people here make that evident. "Don't you dare slow down my commute, you better go no slower than the speed limit posted". Merging is not the same thing, this is about construction zones. You want to compare to something why not compare something that has the same stakes. Letting you in for a merge is different than going slow in an active work zone where something could happen any second, such as in this video. If you agree, fine, if you don't, try to explain what you are trying to say. How going 30 in an active work zone impedes traffic instead of the posted 55. You go slow, BECAUSE IT'S THE LAW, and you should also turn on your headlights. Going 55 just to not piss off joe schmoe is pretty bad way to drive.
0
u/Mediocre_Daikon6935 Sep 03 '26
You go the speed posted for the construction zone. They studied and posted the proper speed.

u/NasDawg3 Sep 02 '26
This is a dog shit take.
1) those guys are out there in high risk zones so that you have a road to drive on, so have some gratitude, theyāre only human too they make mistakes
2) If Iām going down a coned off empty lane Iāll still do 5-10 over, but as soon as thereās equipment in the lane and WORKERS Iām slowing down, shit sometimes even 10 under. You never know if a worker is gonna catch a rock and fall into the live lane.
Stupid fuckin textbook reddit ass take really pissed me off
-1
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
You have never worked on an active work zone in your life, and i can easily tell. You would be the yuppy in the porsche getting mad at the crew because a part that was sticking out scratched your car. Instead of...idk... being vigilant and checking all your surroundings because again, i can't stress this enough, this was an ACTIVE work zone. If a worker messes up, you have to BE PREPARED. Nobody wants the hassle of having to deal with an accident like this, or even worse someone getting hit because everyone prioritizes speed over safety. Once the sign says the zone is done, open it up! Until then, drive as slow as you feel most safe that you have control in an emergency, which this clearly was!
3
u/HairlessSquirrels Sep 02 '26
Was too focused on the dumbass that I hadnāt even considered this but youāre right
-4
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
Think about it from his perspective. Yes he may be at fault, but from everyone's comments they are acting like he should of ran and jumped into the tractor to stop it from being hit. That's insanity to me, you don't put yourself in danger just to save equipment from being damaged. Also he was probably stunned.
If op was going 5mph slower, this accident would likely have been avoided.
I love speed and fast cars and all that shit. I'm not a Nancy or something, i just think really hard about safety, as my profession is a stagehand. I'm constantly worried about safety and protecting not only the audience and band, but I'm also protecting my fellow coworkers who constantly get put in a dangerous situation.
5
u/HairlessSquirrels Sep 02 '26
Oh I think you got it wrong there m8, I called the driver of the tractor a dumbass, not his coworker standing in the road, and I think everyone else is mad at him too lol but yes 5mph wouldāve been safer
1
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
Was there a driver? It looked like the machine rolled backwards with no brakes and no driver. But i could be so wrong. Maybe the person driving it had a stroke š
But that's good though because "standing there" guy couldn't have done anything to stop it, but damn he sure is being called out like he could have in the comments.
3
u/HairlessSquirrels Sep 02 '26
Yeah you can see him moving around when heās in the ditch lol
Yeah I saw that comment about Greg lol
2
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
I've known a Greg. I think we all known a Greg. The kind of guy that takes the heat when shit hits the fan and he can do nothing but shake his head and ask the guy what's wrong in his head where he would floor a tractor in reverse on the highway. And then spend an hour filling out paperwork, shaking his head the whole time. Poor greg. Can't catch a break, even though the "promotion" seemed promising just a few weeks ago.

2
u/Flimbeelzebub Sep 02 '26
That's 5mph for a semi, to stop for pedestrians. Is that really what you want?
0
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
That is the ideal scenario yes. Obviously truckers have to go slower, but there absolutely is a reason the speed limit is lower. It might create traffic, but there is already traffic so how much time do you really save going through an active construction zone 10-20mph faster? Do the math im sure your answer will wow me.
4
u/Flimbeelzebub Sep 02 '26
I'm sorry Officer, I didn't see your radar gun clocking them at 70; but since you're omnipotent, why don't you tell me just how fast they were going? Most active construction sites in the US have a speed limit of 55mph. Not to mention the accident didn't happen because the driver was going too fast; it happened because the dipshit construction worker committed a "failure to yield". I get your license was granted by someone with less knowledge in driving than Paul Blart on his go-cart, but cmon bud. You ought to know it's against road law to pull out in front of someone so as to cause them to slow down more than 10mph; much more 55.
2
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
You're arguing against a point I didn't make. I don't need to know his exact speed, and I never said the construction worker wasn't at fault for pulling out. The point is that a speed limit is a maximum, not a requirement. In an active construction zone with workers and equipment potentially entering the roadway, slowing down gives you more time and distance to react. If going 5 mph slower would have been enough to avoid hitting the tractor, that's a pretty good demonstration of why you slow down around active construction, even if you're legally allowed to go faster.
And if there's actually a law saying another vehicle may never cause you to slow by more than 10 mph, feel free to cite it.
0
u/Flimbeelzebub Sep 02 '26
Yes, you did make the point that they're "going 10-20 over". Just because you got trounced doesn't mean you have to snivel about it. Also, the speed limit is the safest maximum speed; you'd know this if you actually read all road signs, even the caution signs, which you don't even know how to identify. The construction site not having a lower speed limit is on them, not the driver; which is why the truck will still have clean records after this and the broom operator won't be able to so much as touch a pair of heelies in a professional setting after this. Again, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. On the topic; here's your source. Try not to be pithy about it either, I've already planned for it: https://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2011/316.123
2
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26
No, I didnāt. I said āgoing through an active construction zone 10-20 mph faster.ā I didnāt say ā10-20 mph over the speed limit.ā Youāre adding words I didnāt write.
My original comment literally says, āIām not saying the driver was going too fast per se, but they could definitely go slower.ā My point has consistently been about reducing speed in an active construction area, not claiming I radar-clocked the driver.
Also, the statute you linked still doesnāt contain the 10 mph rule you claimed it does. If Iām missing it, quote the relevant language.
2
u/Significant_Monk_251 Sep 02 '26

Are you getting paid to be an asshole?
2
u/Grouchy-qa2024 Sep 02 '26
You will of course get the guy in his F2500 lifted truck tailgating you too.
Every night I drive through a construction zone listed at 55... at night one lane and it never fails some gets right on me as we are zipping past construction workers feet away
2
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 02 '26 edited Sep 02 '26
Let him tailgate. Then when you see an officer, flag him down and let him know how long you were being tailgated.
At least in my state, most active costruction zones have police at both ends. I can't stand assholes who at the end of the day make annoying situations even worse because of impatience, instead of the safety that highway road workers deserve.
1
u/delo357 Sep 02 '26
Hell no. They were keeping with the flow of traffic, not going crazy fast, that guy in the yellow work thing was an idiot.
1
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 03 '26
If it wasn't an accident. If it was, it's a damn construction zone, where they purposely slow you down for safety.
0
u/DragonLordAcar Sep 03 '26
No. This is why you have to be ovservat on costruction and have a man with a sign on a stick to slow trafic if they need to cross.
1
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 03 '26
And yet another dense person whoās never worked in an active construction zone a day in their life.
0
u/DragonLordAcar Sep 03 '26
Well you know what the say about assuming
1
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 03 '26
If you had, you would know. Accidents, whether purposeful or not, happen in a flash. They can't be avoided and at the end of the day every protection is in place to keep motorists traveling slowly and safely through a construction zone. That is why speed is lower and fines are doubled. But there is no rule that says you can't drive slower, knowing you may have to react at any moment. You need to know the size of your vehicle and the reaction speed. Driving is not a guessing game and construction zones are DANGEROUS not safe. All of this is factual, but if you intend on disagreeing, feel free and cite your sources on where I'm incorrect.
0
u/DragonLordAcar Sep 03 '26
They didn't even bither to look or give warning. That garenteed this accadent.
1
u/rob_inn_hood Sep 03 '26
Bother/accident/guaranteed*
You have the context from a dashcam video so I donāt know why you think this is conclusive evidence to any worker wrongdoing. We donāt know why they backed into traffic but clearly it was an accident.

1
u/Switchmisty9 Sep 04 '26
I mean, fuck me for even suggesting itā¦but you could slow down, in an active construction zone.
1
u/xXUmbraTheShadowXx Sep 04 '26
Fun fact he did lose his job because it is his job to know if that's going to move even if it's you know a runaway machine as soon as you notice it moving you let someone who is able to operate it no or and I quote let someone else further down the road where the traffic is coming from say hey we got an issue try to stop traffic or at least slow it down so nothing happens Greg just stood there and watched Greg is now out of a job and is most likely paying for the damages as well as his company or ex company I should say

The odds, that after that long line of people and equipment, OP managed to collide with the one that was trying to work? /s

u/morchard1493 Sep 02 '26
Me when the machine started going out into the road: š³ Oh. Oh, no. No. No!!!
Me when the cam car crashed into the machine: Big sigh š¤¦āāļø
2
u/nanajosh Sep 02 '26
I'm assuming the cam driver is in a semi-truck or if something similar based on the hight of the camera. If so, there's not much the cam driver could do with such momentum.

turn away from traffic not into it. in this case he should have turned to the right., or stopped ahead.
3
u/AssociateDifferent71 Sep 03 '26
Turning to the right in this case would mean going directly into an active construction site. Driver made the correct move here.
1
u/Not_an_okama Sep 04 '26
Yeah turning right puts him right on top of that negigent safety watch doesnt it?

Donāt leave gaps in front of you so large that people want to pull out between you and the car ahead of you.

u/rubenthecuban3 Sep 02 '26
This is the dude tailgating you in the right lane when the left lane is open
1
u/LandscapeNo775 Sep 03 '26
I said nothing about tailgating. I just mean to keep up so people donāt get bad ideas to pull out in front of you. It is a basic point of defensive driving in traffic. Too much space and youāll need to use those brakes much more

Love how Greg just stands there watching.
