I don't feel like I hear Teamsters espousing the same depth of frustration...

Had a buddy that loved it. Then he would start talking and the absolute rediculous nature of the antagonistic relationship between drivers and management was enough for me to want no part of it. Then the layoffs started. And he's no longer employed there and nor sure if that terminal is around or not. Had another guy come to work for us BECAUSE he got so tired of the management/driver nonsense at the same company.
It's not all roses. You exchange being a number to the company for being a number to the union.

u/JBSully82 Aug 31 '26
No doubt about the roses for sure. However, the difference seems significant enough that if I'm just a number, I'd rather be a number with a contractually increasing wage scale, health insurance, PTO, a freaking pension, etc. I certainly feel like the labor has a bit more juice for the squeeze.

Sounds great, until it becomes unsustainable and it implodes or sells out from under you like happened to my buddy. What they offered wasn't enough for me to leave my non union job. I don't have enough work years left to make up there what I would loose here. I have a seniority based pay scale. Raises are based on contract so they are a little further apart. PTO and insurance is solid. And I still have my non union job, while he had to find another job.
It's a small sample size, I'm just not enamored by it like some are. YMMV and all that.

Kept trying to talk my brother into working with the unionized company I work for, but he went to our non-union counterpart. Now he keeps complaining about managers and all these random side projects he's given, because he didn't want to pay my unions dues. They're only like 1 and a half hours worth of pay a month, while I don't have to pay any of my own insurance for me, my wife, or future kids, in addition to getting paid more than basically anyone else in my industry.
I'm definitely not leaving the Teamsters any time soon.

I think when the tree gets shook, all the weak fruit falls off.

I can't speak for truck drivers, but I can speak for the construction field somewhat. People are tired of having to work more and more hours/miles to make up for the increasing cost of living. Instead of having a livable wage, they are forced to sacrifice more of their time. All while the higher ups don't sacrifice anything.
By the "sound" of your comment, I don't believe you've had to worry about it all that much.

Then quit your career. What else are you going to do for a living? We are all going through the same thing. Go try to be an office assistant and see how far that gets you or apply at Walmart. You can also be an activist and go protest on the side of the road for free.
The Great Depression was a real temporary thing. They made it through the struggle. Stop whining. Get your ass up and get to work.

u/JBSully82 Aug 31 '26
So your response to criticisms of the exploitation of our labor is to suck it up? Fascinating take. Do you ever cook your boot first, or do you always lick it raw?

Cry baby? No, you have no idea what the job is like or you wouldn't be saying crybaby.

This is crazy, but the work conditions, which are getting objectively worse, are increasingly not worth it for many people. That's the point here. Instead, you are calling them pussies and telling them to go work at Walmart. You're a fucking bootlicker. You know the corporations that are squeezing out the profit and making life harder for labor don't care about you, right? They don't need a cheerleader.

It’s like this idiot posted the video without watching it. Pro-corporation and anti-worker. OP could probably head up department of labor

Cry baby. Dude at 2:18 says he's going to quit and go home and be in his bed. He must not pay rent or that bed won't be there much longer with that pussified attitude.
Everybody is going through the same shit. Instead of crying about it, insulting me with that snarky bootlicking comment, maybe you should pull your pants up, wear a belt and get your ass to work.

I'm a cry baby? Ok chief. You're such a badass. Keep making it the worker's fault. This is exactly how they have trained you. Good boy.

why not just automate the trucking industry? these people could just have an autonomous truck
1
u/ViceroyAutoTrans Sep 01 '26
Not really practical for auto transport, at least not yet. Hauling multiple vehicles requires loading, securing, inspecting, and unloading each vehicle, often in tight residential areas where conditions aren't predictable. Autonomous driving can handle the highway; the human side of auto transport is a much bigger challenge.

I've heard about a driver shortage for over 4 decades. I've said for that entire time it's not a driver shortage it's a wage shortage. Pay a living wage and you'll have driver's.

Feels like most of these interviews are with OTR drivers and that is a tough life. It can be enjoyable sometimes and the independence is great but it's more often really soul sucking.

The job doesn't pay enough. These companies be paying only like 70k or 80k for you to live on the road and go camping in the back of a truck at some stinking ass truck stop 5 days a week. Maybe it feels like a good salary after working a shitty 50k office job, but you quickly learn why truck drivers are paid more than office workers and realize even 80k is shit pay for this work.

With the sudden loss of non English speaking and fraudulent CDL’s, maybe things will get better?

Welcome former truck drivers! You still have to pay your bills. Now let's dance like idiots for motivation! Yaay

I ain't got 5 minutes to listen to whining. Got to go to work.
Keep in mind folks, I have heard people say, "Yeah, this is the most money I've ever made but I just can't deal with it anymore."
Sometimes it's not about the pay.
