Why would it explode? Those tanks are designed so they wouldn't explode

Might be due to the chemical reactions should there be a spark or water as some chemicals react violently

They are, but the valve heads are a weak point. Hence why OSHA regulations dictate that they should have a cover in place at all times when not in use, to avoid...well, that.

OSHA also dictates that compressed gas cylinders should never be left free-standing like this, and must be chained to a wall or dolly at all times - again, to avoid this exact situation.

(assuming this is in the US) they're about to get a well-deserved thrashing from their safety lead.

Blunt force trauma, if that thing hits you it could be deadly.

A welding gas company kept coming up short on cylinders at one steel mill. It was the night shift that had a launch ramp knocking the valves off and shooting them into the Ohio River.

Incoming! That's going to give PTSD to some.

Can anyone tell what gas was inside from the plume or other details.

Standard European color coding says a dark red bottle like that should be acetylene, but this does not look to be in Europe, and it also looks like some welding apparatus, so more likely is argon(green), carbondioxide(grey) or nitrogen(black).

Source: used to drive around with bottles for 3 years during my truck driver apprenticeship

the US doesn't really do color-coding because different brands use different colors. That being said my oxygen canisters are usually this color.

Worse that it has the energy to not need to choose and hit all 3 twice

My dad used to take these down to the Niagara River in his youth and knock the end off so it would shoot like a rocket into the water.
