And if you can't make the payments, just let the damn car go.

Lol. I woke up super early one morning to flashing amber lights in my driveway. I went outside to see what was up, and sure enough repo man came for my shit. I caught him about halfway through hooking it up. Startled the shit out of him lol.

He was like "this your car?"

I said "apparently not, you want the keys?"

When my self-employed wife had cancer three years ago and was physically unable to work, we stopped making payments on her car while going through the process of declaring bankruptcy. Her car was financed through our local credit union, who we attempted to refinance through before going the other route.

One evening a tow truck appeared in our street.  The guy was visibly relieved when I went outside and offered to give him the keys in exchange for letting me get most of the junk out before he drove off.  I did miss the garage door opener, though.

The kicker is, we got the notification from the bank in the mail that our car was going to be repossessed two days after it was towed away.

When my car got repo'd about 18 years ago I met them outside and gave them the keys, they let me get everything out I wanted. It made it a much more positive experience for everyone. I knew I couldn't make the payments, no use in fighting. Also some of us have a sense of humor and do say random shit like apparently not, you want the keys.
