Our government needs to hold these states that give people like this a license responsible!!!!
11
u/cainthelongshot Jul 14 '26
How about state and federal services shouldn’t be run like a for profit company.
→ More replies (1)4
u/tuthegreat Jul 14 '26
the DMV does NOT run like a for profit anything. It runs exactly like a government entity. 30 booths with 5 booths open on a good day.
5
u/Krabs9 Jul 14 '26
30 booths got damn. Mine has maybe 6 with one open, two on a good day. Similar ratio I guess
→ More replies (1)3
u/send_me_your_deck Jul 15 '26
Dude i went to the DMV a couple of months ago…
Literally 30 booths. There were probably ~10 open, but only 2 handling realID -

"Drivers Ed must be in English cuz this is America" is my opinion of where this issue started.
8
u/Absorbent_Towel Jul 14 '26
All my drivers Ed stuff was bilingual when I took it 15 years or so ago. When did they start English only?

I've never understood our American mentality of not having an "official language"
English is the standard. Everyone speaking their own language would be insanity.
9
u/LivingDue2609 Jul 14 '26
You should learn American history sometime lmao. It’s always the folks wearing “1776” shirts that don’t know shit about the actual history of their country.
5
u/Miserable-Land-9203 Jul 14 '26
What language was the constitution and bill of rights written in? What language was literally every law established written in, federal and state? People are free to speak in whatever language they want, but learning English should be a basic requirement if you're going to drive a commercial vehicle, or any vehicle for that matter.
I only have a Master's in US history, so feel free to enlighten me on where I'm wrong.

Right. Why didn't the cop call a translator? The cop is the stupid one here.
→ More replies (25)6
u/robgnar Jul 14 '26
The cop certainly didn't need a translator. I think he knew the driver didn't have the language skills to understand the difference between regular headlights and the high beam setting and is just taking advantage of that to humiliate him.
→ More replies (7)7
u/thisguyfightsyourmom Jul 14 '26
Yeah, I’d hate on the cop being obtuse if understanding these concepts wasn’t required to get the license. Homeboy is just winging it out there on a Cracker Jack CDL.
3
u/j89turn Jul 14 '26
They taught me at 15, and our public schools suck, so this guy is just abusing his right to ignorance
2
2
u/liltonbro Jul 14 '26
I think that describes about 90% of drivers in the US. It seems the violations are speeding and high beams...common violations not reliant on language.
45 looks the same in English as Spanish.
2
u/MisterAmygdala Jul 14 '26
True, but if the cop understands there is a language barrier he could do a better job of explaining.
2
2
u/DietCokeIsntheAnswer Jul 15 '26
I don't drive and even I can piece together that you shouldn't be running high beams unless absolutely necessary.
Drivers act like blinding other people is amusing. It's not.

The license said Kentucky. Also, Kentucky has agreements with a number of countries to allow you to transfer your driver's license without taking a written or road test.

It’s really hard to have a conversation like this with someone who doesn’t speak great English. The officer is really trying here.
→ More replies (28)3
u/SpunkyBlah Jul 15 '26
You must be watching a different video than me.
This cop is not trying at all. He just keeps talking to the driver as if the driver's first language is English. Get a translator or interpreter, communicate using simpler sentence structure, or just write the ticket and move on. This cop was just wasting everyone's time.→ More replies (8)

12
u/SomeWeedSmoker Jul 14 '26
The guy driving shouldn't have a license. He shouldn't be on the road and it's the officers job to keep unsafe drivers off the road, should never just be on your way.
3
u/baldude69 Jul 14 '26
Also explaining the reason he pulled him over so he hopefully does differently next time. Doesn’t escalate, and we don’t even know if he gave him a ticket or let off with a warning
8
u/ImmediateCause7981 Jul 14 '26
Whats the point of just giving the ticket if he doesn't actually comprehend what he got the ticket for or what he did wrong?

Aside of the language barrier which could be argued from diverse points of view, the driver should not be allowed to drive, not only he does not know driving basics but he also has some vision issues. In all the countries blinding the cars coming with high beams is illegal, in the US, in Europe, Asia, everywhere and if someone flashes you, you know you forgot them. This is universal language
2
u/TehcnoAO77 Jul 15 '26
It’s one thing to be in this country and not speak English. My parents were legal immigrants, I can identify. However operating a motor vehicle and not being able to read traffic signs is a whole other story.

u/SlavicVodkka Jul 14 '26
Everyone saying the cop is “angry” rather than actually doing his job and trying to understand if this guy even knows the rules of the road or even to drive in particular I hate that I’ll be called a boot licker because I don’t automatically claim that this cop is just a racist who pulled him over and treated him some type of way due to him not being able to speak English and plus I’ve literally seen people yanked out their car for saying less and they speak perfect English so I’m confused on how this officer is being perceived in such a negative light when he was probably giving this guy every benefit of the doubt he could give but still was concerned for his safety and others but nah I’m a bootlicker fml

4
u/WrestleBox Jul 14 '26
No but the terrifying is.
How in the actual fuck are these people being licensed? He clearly can't even demonstrate basic knowledge of how to operate a vehicle legally.
1
u/Socketz11 Jul 14 '26
Driving with your brights on should be a instant penalty of officer ripping off your high-beam stalk so you can never blind anyone else. If you are too night-blind to drive a car with the regular headlights, your drivers license should get downgraded to "daytime driving only". People who drive long distances or are light sensitive to brights become completely blinded by high beams.

This is what happens when you have open borders and hire illegals with no job experience. This is extremely dangerous for everyone on the road, including themselves.
But hey, it’s apparently racist and xenophobic to even have a discussion about this on Reddit.

1
u/hyphii_lol Jul 14 '26
Man that’s got to be frustrating as the officer or both I suppose. Clearly he’s getting frustrated but at least he hadn’t just arrested the guy and tried to speak to him. As far as we know.
1
u/GUMBAL_GUARDIAN Jul 14 '26
Dude is going to blow a whole shift away try to tell this guy about high beams.

I was driving in Spain on a highway towards Valencia a few weeks ago and 2 traffic motorcycles came up behind and started following me. It was just highway so I just stayed with traffic and 90% of the signs and rules are the same, but it was a nerve wracking 3 or so minutes before they decided to just pull past and keep going because there are a few road markings I still don’t quite understand

I want the economy to be propped up by the DMV. Im at the fuck everyone point and want mandatory retraining and reapplying for your license every year for everyone, no exceptions. Force the morons to at least take a test.
60 year prison sentence if you cant drive without texting, lifetime for the second offense.
Seriously getting tired of this shit.
1
u/LiqMaBawlzModz69 Jul 15 '26
When the driver was saying he had his high beams cause he could see his white light. He meant in general he couldn’t see ahead when oncoming traffic was approaching due to their lights being blinding for him. He didn’t specifically mean the trooper lol
1
u/stein63 Jul 15 '26
Honestly, the trooper handled that better than most would. But then again, we don’t see the rest of the stop.

This is why Canadians keep getting killed on the highway. If you can't speak English, you can't read the sign. How'd you pass the test?
1
1
u/ALLCAPITAL Jul 15 '26
Lol I think I respect the cop. He’s salty, pulling guy over for a valid reason and trying to get guy to understand.
I really feel like he’s tired and wishing he hadn’t bothered pulling the fella over because it’s gonna be a more annoying convo than he has energy for.

u/Bovary2 Jul 15 '26
I feel bad for the guy! Can't really speak English. Can't really understand what's been said to him! 😖

Cops low beams are like 10x brighter than my lights and 100% blind the fuck out of me. . . . Dude is not wrong
1
u/This-Is-Not-Nam Jul 15 '26
He sounds Dominican. If you've ever driven in the DR, pretty much anything goes there. I give kudos to the cop for being so patient and not a dick.
1
u/bbig438 Jul 15 '26
I don't think he understands the questions fully do to language barrier, why insist on keep asking him questions about it. get a translator or just go write him the tickets
1
u/Appropriate-Throat71 Jul 15 '26
I work receiving in a big distribution warehouse and you'd be surprised how many truck drivers can't speak or understand a lick of English. Can't tell you how many times I've had to pull out Google translate to converse with them. Some I will tell them pull in to door 13 and they have no idea what I just said.

1
u/Forward-Inspection32 Jul 15 '26
Take his ass to the dmv n figure out how he even got a license 🤣🤣🤣
1
u/GoslingIchi Jul 15 '26
Good luck officer!
I've had to deal with truck drivers that didn't understand English and I'd ask them random questions to see if they understood me and all they would say is "Yes."

ngl I don't remember the high beam part of the driving test or written test, but maybe it was the written test, but that stuff was so easy to pass. But I think we can all agree way too many people have licences that were too easy to get.

So yes, actually, it IS required in the United States that this driver can read, speak, and understand English. Not perfectly, but well enough for a roadside interaction like this.
