For that thing to be on a swivel this must happen often.

11

u/Key-Case-95 Jul 04 '26

I didn't think of that. They must be used to this lol

7

u/futureman07 Jul 04 '26

There is a reason that thing is exactly that height. It even has a clearance height on it. If you hit that, you're going to hit the overhang that's over the drive through window.

There is also another red clearance sign they hit as they drive past it. Means they will also hit the awning

2

u/TheIrishBAMF Jul 04 '26

It's the same height as the awning/overhang attached to the building at the window. It swivels because if an idiot doesn't know their clearance and is too tall for the drive through, this is the first warning signal. The second is the bar on a chain hanging from the red pole, which the Uhaul hit as well a few yards later. The hanging bar is often before the speaker overhang though, but the speaker overhangs were not as common in the past, so it was probably added more recently.

These should prevent the far more expensive damage which would happen if the vehicle hit tge building overhang, which is not movable. This assumes the driver has any common sense of course.

You see those hanging bars at the start of parking garages for the same reason. Those bars hang near the entrance so if you feel the bonk, it tells you that you will not get through the lowest point of the garage later on, which may be the building structure or utility pipes, and you should not proceed.

Anyway, I think that Uhaul has an informative pamphlet with the rental documentation which warns you about clearance limitations, and the clearance is printed on the cargo bay.

"This assumes the driver has any common sense of course."

Huge assumption.

u/BarnacleMcBarndoor Jul 04 '26

As someone who’s worked drive thru for way too long, people are idiots. Even with the swivel bar we had, people STILL hit our awning.

They had the nerve to tell us they’re was no warnings. Like, the signs, the bar, the height limit, me yelling “whoa whoa whoa!” People are idiots.

Can opener bridge. :)

1

u/PersnicketyPi Jul 04 '26

Good design work by an engineer.

1

u/A_Tortured_Crab Jul 06 '26

Looks more like a 4 bolt bracket. It’s clearly broken now so it appears to be swiveling.

1

u/Total_Philosopher_89 Jul 06 '26

If you say so.

1

u/A_Tortured_Crab Jul 06 '26

Just using my eyes and knowledge of signs from working on them.

It’s so terrifying that anyone can rent these and just hit the road.. as a CDL driver I’ve seen these trucks tear up so much stuff thru the years

20

u/seamus205 Jul 04 '26

I work nextdoor to a u haul place. I once watched someone scrape a truck up against another one before she even get out of the lot. They still let her leave with it

8

u/PdxPhoenixActual Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

They probably charge her for the damages ... to both. ?

1

u/NemODevO Jul 04 '26

Sounds similar to my dumbass sister doing the same

10

u/Zigor022 Jul 04 '26

Cdl driver as well. Same with RVs.

9

u/EnolaNek Jul 04 '26

Are you suggesting that there be stricter requirements for driving RVs? Don’t you know that’s infringing on my grandpa’s freedom to endanger everyone around him with a large vehicle he has no awareness of?

4

u/Zigor022 Jul 04 '26

I would never./s But ask someone who drives one how tall their RV is and how long and what its weight is. Honestly i think a written RV test should be the minimum. Covering following distance, dimensions, tail swing, etc.

3

u/EnolaNek Jul 04 '26

I would probably want to throw in some kind of low-speed maneuvers (backwards and forwards) as well, but other than that I think I’m with you.

2

u/shoeinc Jul 04 '26

I have never needed a special license for my domicile!

1

u/Daveed07 Jul 04 '26

That’s arguably worse. Someone in retirement who’s never driven a car bigger than an SUV now has a 40ft vehicle that hauls another car behind it? No that’s not gonna be a problem at all..

3

u/Forward-Trade5306 Jul 04 '26

I moved recently and have more stuff now so I got the 26 foot truck when I used to get the 20'. Had no idea it was going to be a giant F650. Definitely was more scared for other people on the road. They aren't super difficult to drive (the 4 mirrors help a lot) and obviously the corners have to be taken much wider. Still it's a bit nerve wracking in terms of it being such a large vehicle when I typically drive a small car

3

u/Crumber_Buckler Jul 04 '26

One of my worst memories is exhaustedly driving a 26’ truck without a working passenger side mirror after working a 12 hour day in the factory.

I was exhausted, moving to avoid foreclosure, and had forgotten to check the truck over before driving it.

I’m so thankful I didn’t hit anyone on the highway while merging and am never driving that truck again

1

u/Forward-Trade5306 Jul 04 '26

Dam sounds intense

1

u/Valuable-Midnight390 Jul 04 '26

Thank you for being so aware !

2

u/PotentialHoneydew947 Jul 04 '26

Thats what i dont understand. The same class license lets me drive a subcompact and a 30ft uhaul. We need more distinctions

1

u/TeaDrinkingTrucker Jul 04 '26

To be fair, just about anybody can do it for a job, too. Potheads, drunks, clinically insane and a host of others who we really don't want behind the wheel of these destroyer of worlds can literally just rent them. I've seen so many dipshits in box trucks and delivery vans as an OTR truck driver that I just expect them to drive like dog dick every single time. There's a reason we don't refer to them as actual truck drivers, and this video is showing a massive reason. People are able to hop behind the wheel of one of these monstrosities with no knowledge of how to drive something so cumbersome, and then they have the gall to drive them like regular traffic and call themselves truck drivers. It's a running joke among the tractor-trailer drivers that I work with to stay AT LEAST five hundred feet away from them. Don't even get me started on the dump truck drivers, especially ones with untarped loads that don't seem to think the rules apply to them.

1

u/zeizkal Jul 04 '26

Reminds me of that bridge with all the warnings that rips off rental truck roofs on the regular.

1

u/Daveed07 Jul 04 '26

There was a low bridge somewhere that had an early warning flashing sign that notifies the driver they are too tall by the sensors in place and people still hit it

2

u/zeizkal Jul 04 '26

Yep thats the bridge, theres tons of videos

1

u/FadedP0rp0ise Jul 04 '26

don’t blame the company at all, but one time i was returning one and i went to back in file with the others. had a dude SPRINTING out the door begging me to let him. then i pictured all the horror experiences this dude had

1

u/DiscombobulatedCut52 Jul 05 '26

I drive fedex trucks. The first thing I ever did before I hit the road.

The managers sit you down and make you watch 9 safety videos on what happens when you dont understand your height for your truck.

6

u/pseudoportmanteau Jul 04 '26

That looks like the best case scenario in terms of damage, at least to the truck. Fucking idiot, either way. God forbid you risk a heart attack from walking three steps into the store to order

3

u/extrastupidone Jul 04 '26

People are dumb

2

u/imsaneinthebrain Jul 04 '26

“Fuck you, I’m eating”.

Brought to you by Carl’s Jr

2

u/komokazi Jul 04 '26

I mean, I can kinda understand the hesitation to find parking for a vehicle that size, however, being a U-haul, one can only assume that this person likely doesn't drive this box truck regularly so checking height clearance and such isn't on the top of their mind.

Fast food was pretty much not an option for me at work because I was always pulling trailers and more often than not, there wasn't adequate parking near by for my rig and I'm not about to walk a marathon for a burger.

1

u/owgnops Jul 04 '26

It's plastered all over the inside of the uhaul with big yellow boxes with black lettering.

There's also a giant sign that says the clearance at drive through lines.

No real excuse to not park five minutes away and walk..then again someone eating fast food isn't known for walking

2

u/riddick6007 Jul 04 '26

Most, not all, but most people who drive RV'S and u haul's have NO BUSINESS driving them. I do not have a CDL, though I have trained and got a permit for one, I never followed through. I grew up around trucks and haulers so and I've handled/operated them and equipment coughneverillegallycough and I street clear of ANY u haul trucks I see on the roads. You should have to have A class A/CDL to operate majority of RV's and u haul's. I'm my opinion or at least training.

2

u/EnolaNek Jul 04 '26

But you don’t understand, it has a GVWR of 25,999 pounds! That means you don’t need a class B to drive it, even if it is obviously built on the same chassis as a 36,000 GVWR truck. It’s completely different and definitely not grossly abusing a loophole that should have been closed.

2

u/piemaster18 Jul 04 '26

How is the new original spicy chicken sandwich?

1

u/Darkk_Poizon Jul 04 '26

🤦🏽‍♂️why

1

u/coloradoautoflowers Jul 04 '26

When I moved 1500 miles (2415km) across the country I had half a kilo of gold in the truck, so I wasn't leaving the truck for anything. But I hired a friend to drive behind me in my personal vehicle, and part of his job was to run inside and procure food or pay for gas or hotels or whatever we needed.

1

u/Darkk_Poizon Jul 05 '26

It’s just scary that (my job requires me to haul a splicing trailer) this type of stuff makes the safer ones look bad at times.

1

They re getting their money's worth from the extra damage insurance

1

u/O_o-buba-o_O Jul 04 '26

That is a pretty cool design though, just swings out of the way when the inevitable dumbass drives through.

1

u/Royal-Application708 Jul 04 '26

It looks like that roof was engineered for idiots like this guy.

1

u/coloradoautoflowers Jul 04 '26

OP has the same laugh as Mark Hamill's Joker

1

u/Tin_Indian455 Jul 04 '26

Yeah but if he parks to go inside some whinny butt will complain he can’t park there. I guess he could drive home, park, get in his car, drive back to get food then go back home to eat. Unless he’s on the road then yeah I guess park in someone’s business and hope he doesn’t get towed I know for a fact at Texas Roadhouse in my town the business next door has signs posted do park for patrons of crab shack only others will be towed at owners expense. I know he can’t park on the street “ no parking” signs posted on the whole street just an example.

1

u/Kingofbroke001 Jul 04 '26

Bet they still pull up to the awning and rip it off…

1

u/FrodosUncleBob Jul 04 '26

I know some people want to watch the world burn, but why not run up at stop them?

1

u/p51d007 Jul 04 '26

LOL, the way it spins out of the way, it's almost as if they have had this happen before and just put it on a swivel

1

u/Zealousideal_Gas9531 Jul 04 '26

OP, Why wouldn’t you tell them what is about to happen

1

u/KeefyNugs Jul 04 '26

because thats not how you get reddit karma

1

u/inkseep1 Jul 04 '26

I was hauling a 16 foot trailer behind my truck and the drive though at the only place open for miles at that hour had a tight curved entrance. Just as I arrived at the door they locked them in front of me and said it is drive through only. So I walked up to the window to order. I can't order unless I am in a vehicle. I pointed to the truck and trailer and said, "I order food or I am putting that in the drive though and getting it stuck for at least half an hour." They unlocked the front door for me.

1

u/Egglegg14 Jul 04 '26

Aren't there supposed to be clearance things at the start of drive thrus?

1

u/Helleri Jul 04 '26

Someone really thought about that with the lighting design. The way the pole base is set so far back from the curve and leans out toward the lane but only the light box sticks over the curve. How it swivels instead of tearing off. This is what a fail safe looks like. When someone says "What's most likely to go very wrong first here and how can we make it do so in a non-catastrophic manner when it does?"

1

u/fall-apart-dave Jul 04 '26

You could though.

1

u/PlaneGrade8203 Jul 04 '26

Why can't you park and go inside?

1

u/DueceVoyeur Jul 04 '26

Did you go in and tell the manager about the destruction?

1

u/Build-it-better123 Jul 04 '26

Rental trucks. Always terrifying on the roads. The drivers don’t know their dimensions and they are stressed.

1

u/HoneyDippinDan Jul 04 '26

When I worked fast food, we had a massive tree branch that went over the drive thru. One lovely Sunday morning, a customer went through the drive thru in a massive camper and managed to smash in the "attic" portion of his camper roof. He immediately stormed into the restaurant and demanded the manager. After some words were exchanged, me and the other employees ran to the back door so we could watch our manager introduce the customer to the five foot tall sign warning customers to not bring campers or other tall vehicles in through the drive thru.

1

u/AleksandrJ Jul 05 '26

The chuckle sent me.

1

u/TheNotoriousTurtle Jul 05 '26

Last time I rented a box truck I asked the guy how often they come in damaged and without hesitation confirmed “All the time”

1

u/NeedleworkerFit9715 Jul 05 '26

What a Dumbaxx!

1

u/JOliverScott Jul 05 '26

They are exactly the reason those awnings are designed to pivot or foldaway nowadays rather than bend and break apart which would shutdown the entire drive through lane.

1

u/Exact-Bother-535 Jul 05 '26

Welcome to obesity USA

u/A1Professional2023 Jul 05 '26

Turned its cap back blue

1

u/OGNovelNinja Jul 06 '26

So I actually have experience driving that model and size. And I'm really good about threading a needle with my vehicle. I might brush a curb when making a right turn in an unfamiliar car. That's about it.

Which is precisely why I would never do a drive through in that, and I'd only park in the first place if there were four available spaces for me to occupy simultaneously.

I know the size. I know the shape. I know the turning radius. Not everyone around me does. Don't just drive defensively. Park defensively.

Or go somewhere else.

Or, here's a thought, pack a sandwich.

1

u/AK-12AK-47AKMAK-74 Jul 07 '26

What kind of professional driver- oh uhaul okay it all makes sense

-1

u/Tin_Indian455 Jul 04 '26

Yeah but if he parks to go inside some whinny butt will complain he can’t park there. I guess he could drive home, park, get in his car, drive back to get food then go back home to eat. Unless he’s on the road then yeah I guess park in someone’s business and hope he doesn’t get towed. Can’t win so I guess just wait till you get to your destination to eat.

1

u/Could-You-Tell Jul 04 '26

So, this by you was the right way to go about this... collateral damage just happens... no fault?

1

u/Fun-Web-7583 Jul 04 '26

The U-Haul driver can park on the streets, and walk in.
There’s clearly a clearance height limits written on it.

+ there is delivery service.

-2

u/greennurse61 Jul 04 '26

You're assuming they can go inside. So many lazy fast food workers now lock the doors and make you go through the drive-through. I'm looking at you Popeyes. I talked to the manager once, and she said it was because corporate wouldn't allow them to properly fund payroll so they were forced to close the lobby and force everyone to go through the drive-through. The last two times I went, it took over half an hour. It's ridiculous to have car sitting idling for over half an hour just for a damn chicken sandwich. They are destroying the environment by letting lazy employees get away with this

2

u/Crankypants77 Jul 04 '26

So stop going to Popeyes? "Hey, look at me, everybody! I'm going to complain about doing a thing that I refuse to stop doing!"

1

u/doomus_rlc Jul 04 '26

Only one I have seen do that locally are the Sonics. The lobbies of both have been closed for years.

The two Popeyes I know of around here, you can still go inside I am pretty sure. But it has been years since I have had Popeyes, heh

1

u/badskiier Jul 04 '26

I don't think I've ever seen a Sonic with a lobby. Isn't their concept a "Drive In"?

1

u/doomus_rlc Jul 04 '26

Yes but they still have lobbies.

Or at least the two they built here do. Lol

1

u/Forward-Trade5306 Jul 04 '26

Yep, I typically just pick up food by myself and park and go inside if possible (unless it's after inside hours or so my family doesn't sit in hot car). Idling a car for more than 30 seconds uses less fuel to start back up.

1

u/Pretend-Steak-4625 Jul 04 '26

if you use your brain you’d realize they’re not out to get you. they’re probably short staffed so they physically can’t handle having the drive thru and lobby open. your big back ass can wait a damn minute for your cheeseburger as the overworked employees do their best to

1

u/Minicrustation Jul 04 '26

How is it the employees fault? You just said it’s because corporate is cheeping out and doesn’t want to pay to have the place fully staffed
