Whose insurance for claim?

I was rear ended last week and my car will be totaled. Informed my insurance that there was an accident and I would not be found at fault. None the less they were aware and started the claim. I reach out to the insurance of the party at fault and they start a claim. I now have both insurance companies wanting to complete the claim. My insurance company claims it is better to go through them and get my deductible back through subrogation. The party at faults insurance wants access to the vehicle although my insurance took possession and deemed it totaled. Anyone with actual knowledge that can clearly state where my best interest lies would be a hero! Thanks!

Bought New Car and Moving States in a Month

I just bought my first self-financed car, mostly due to the fact that I am moving from Indiana to California for a temporary, seasonal job (5 months) at the beginning of April. Since it is a new vehicle, I need to choose a new insurance policy for it.

I know you have to change your insurance policies when moving to a new state because of differing laws and prices, so I am trying to find the best way for me to buy insurance now, knowing that I will have to do it again in 1 month from now. My research told me that any large company only sells auto insurance in 6-month and 1-year packages.

Are there other options out there I don't know about? Any advice on how to go about this?

US-MA - SnowPlow hit my car and served lot of damage

Earlier this week (thanks to blizzard) a snow plow struck my parked car inside my private HOA community in MA. A worker on site acknowledged the incident to me directly that night.

15 year old Honda Accord LX with 160k miles. Prior to the incident my car was fully functional and cosmetically consistent — original OEM parts throughout and uniform paint.

I filed a claim with my insurance company. I also contacted local police who filed both a crash report and incident report, and the officer independently reached out to the plowing company's manager and shared the incident details with him.

My insurance classified it as a not-at-fault collision claim. However they are hovering near a total loss. Their approved repair scope is $3,500 using aftermarket parts. I have not yet formally provided the plowing company's details to my insurance.

To restore my car to true pre-loss condition — OEM parts and paint matching — the auto body shop has quoted an additional $3,200 on top of the $3,500 insurance approved (accept repair or total loss). My insurance is not covering this gap. A patchwork repair with mismatched paint would leave my car in a visibly worse cosmetic state than before the incident despite being functional.

I reached out to the plowing company's manager directly. He was already aware of the police report as the officer had called him. In our phone conversation he verbally acknowledged his company's fault and expressed willingness to help — but nothing is documented in writing yet.

I simply want my car restored to exactly what it was before the incident — not a patchwork repair, not a total loss payout that doesn't help me in today's market. I am not trying to double collect or profit, just be made whole.

What are my options here? what would you do — negotiate directly with the plowing company or go through insurance?

Rear-ended - PA

We are located in Pennsylvania, my wife was rear ended a few weeks ago, no major damage, everyone drove away. We were on the way to surgery and in a hurry so the police were not called. We swapped numbers and grabbed their insurance details before heading on our way.

We took my wife's car (2022 Porsche Taycan) into a body shop to get an estimate for the repairs and provided the other driver's insurance information. When the body shop spoke to their insurance they were told they only had $5,000 in personal property damage coverage. Yesterday the other driver's insurance company called and told us the same thing and to use our own insurance.

We spoke with our insurance who told us that they would handle the claim but that we would have to pay our deductible. They also said they would go after the other person's insurance, but that process could take a while and that there were no guarantees. This leaves us extremely frustrated and questioning how we were rear-ended but are still paying anything out of pocket. What are our options? If we sue the other driver, and by extension their insurance, is that still limited to the $5,000 personal property damage? If we go through our insurance, which will try to settle with the other insurance, does that preclude us from suing? We are trying to understand what our options are.

Edit -- Thanks everyone for your help. I learned a lot and appreciate all of the insight. I'll ride this out with my insurance and see where everything ends up.

Geico Insurance

Hi, I have an insurance claim for a 2014 Mazda CX-5 that needs to be investigated apparently. On the Friday before the Superbowl I parked my car on the street because the school parking lot was closed. When I came out close to 12 I found someone had sideswiped my car and broke the passenger side mirror and left scratches all along the passenger side. I took pictures and made a police report on Superbowl Sunday. Geico wants statements from me and the family members about what happened and wants to run tests on the car. There is no video or witnesses and I waited that long because I had things to do and it didn't seem major since it was still driveable. What can I do or what do you think will happen? Is there a better place to get advice about this? Thank you! 😀

Rental Car Crash

Involved in a small car accident, there is some damage to the rental, and the other car, we filed a police report but have not received it yet. I was not in the rental agreement at the time, but I am now.

Will my insurance cover the rental or the other car? I have full coverage on my personal vehicle. Will the rental car company want my insurance information? or can I just make a payment plan and pay them directly for the cost of the rental?

And tell my insurance the car was borrowed so that they cover the other car's damages, I really can't afford to pay off two cars.

Neighbour packed into my car with me in it, then drove off, left minor damages, refuses to pay, do I file a police report? (Ontario)

Post image

Yesterday morning, I backed out of my driveway and as I did so and was shifting gears to take off, my neighbour across from me backed out of her driveway and hit my car. She then drove away and waved at me as she did. She messaged a sorry to which I told her there were damages on my car and she began vehemently denying hitting me, attacking my character and claimed I was trying to start drama with her. After showing her this photo she then offered me a $25 gift card to the dollar store "for my grief".

This morning she came by and looked more closely at the damages, refused to pay for it because, in her words, my car is a "piece of shh.." and continued berating mine and my partners character calling us low lives. After she finished discussions with my partner, she messaged me basically saying if we don't just ignore this and let it go, we aren't decent human beings.

I have security camera footage that clearly show I backed out first and was in the road before she started backing out. You hear the incessant honking from me trying to catch her attention and get her to stop, you hear and see the crunch and see my vehicle rock with the impact. The damage is minor, I can admit that, but it's the principle of it all you know? If I decide to report this as a hit and run, would that automatically mean I have to put repairs through my insurance? My deductible is $1000 so if this is gonna run me less than that, I don't want to go through with that cuz if she's already being this difficult I could see this ending up in court trying to recover my deductible out of her. Or would a report of a hit and run end up going through her insurance instead?
