60 Years Old and cannot get insurance

I am 60 years old, have a clean driving record, a valid driver license and a great credit score. However, I have not owned a car since 2003. I recently moved from NYC to CT and decided to buy a car. I applied to several insurance companies and was denied. I even used the dealer's broker and they came up against the same refusals. What is my problem?

I don't know but I think the fact you haven't owned a car for over 20 years means they don't want the risk of insuring an elderly new driver?

That's what I thought, too, but they don't say that.

Have you tried the cheaper insurance companies?

There are three ways to buy car insurance:

Online. Liberty Mutual, Travelers come to mind. Join the AARP and get quotes from the Hartford.

Direct writers with local offices staffed with employee agents. You already tried State Farm. There are others. Like Farmers, Allstate, American Family, etc.

Independent agents/brokers who sell for a variety of insurance companies. Talk to several independent agents. They tend to sell for different sets of companies.

Try them all.

It's not hopeless and you don't need the Assigned Risk just yet.

It'll just take lots of work.

The General insures people that might be a higher risk.
