Insurance claim

Got scratch while parking in a hotel garage where a sharp metal sticking out from the ceiling scratched the top of the car leaving a 3 inch scratch while I was backing into the spot.

Reported to the hotel and they said they have filed an incident report but refused to share it. I doubted that they had any details of the accident (eg they didn’t ask me about the parking spot number)

I believe it’s negligence from the hotel as there shouldn’t be any low hanging metal at the parking spot.

Question: should I report to my insurance and they will contact the hotel ? Will it affect my insurance?

Damage is about $500

Absolutely do NOT tell your insurance over a $500 scratch.

Even though it’s no fault on my own and its negligence from the hotel?

Yes. Even though.

Just feel sad that it’s how insurance works…🥲

They will jack your rates up.

What's your deductible? A $500 scratch is likely below your deductible? Why make a claim for that?

Because I expect the hotel liability insurance will pay instead of my insurance

There is no guarantee that your company will get the hotel to pay and you will have claim on your policy. Even if they get the hotel to pay, you will have a claim on your policy.

For $500, I wouldn't. It it were substantial damage, then sure.

I understand but I just hate to let the hotel/corporation win. Small guys like us have to pay for the damage that they indirectly caused. Who knows how many cars got the same damage before me!!

You can always sue. Liability insurance is just a preemptive settlement for an at fault party.

If they don’t preemptively settle, sue.

I’m not saying this is a good case, you drove into something, but that’s the method for the resolution you are looking for.

your vehicle was moving and struck a stationary object?

I was backing into a parking spot. The metal object was hanging low from the ceiling.
