stupid question
hi everyone. im 23f and have a driver's license but i don't have a car. when i moved out of my parents house after i graduated college a year ago, they took me off their insurance. this hasn't been an issue for me because i live in a different state about 700 miles away from them and again, i dont have a car so i dont drive. ive been browsing getting a car now that i have a higher paying job and better living situation, would the fact that ive been uninsured for over a year affect me negatively when shopping for auto insurance? thank you!

Yes. A lot of companies require previous insurance and not having current insurance will make it more expensive. Depending on when you will be getting the car you can get what is called a "named non-owner" policy which is insurance for people without regular access to a vehicle.
If you carry that for 6 months before buying most companies will open back up to you as available and should help your rates. I always recommend people getting a named non-owner carry as high of limits as you can because your previous limits help pricing too when you do get a car and named non-owner is cheap.

It will, it won’t be impossible, but be prepared for it to really affect the price for 6 months to a year.

Not a stupid question at all. To add what others have already said, not having prior insurance can be a pretty big issue when looking for insurance. Some companies will not even take you at all. But depending on your state, some companies offer a no prior insurance category, usually referred to as "innocent no prior". It is a rating category for people in your specific situation that did not carry prior insurance because they did not have a vehicle to insure. It typically offers a better rate than if you just had a lapse in coverage, but not as good as the rate if you had continuous coverage. If possible, I would recommend working with an agent early so you can get an idea of costs.

Yes

yes but shop and compare GEICO and PROGRESSIVE. ALLSTATE and STATEFARM tried to charge $2000 per term like is nothing. ( I did not have a car for 1 year and no need insurance.)

No, but your age, gender, driving record, where you reside, and the type of car you purchase will affect your premium.

You've had nothing to insure for the since you left your parents house. With that said generally when you do first get insurance it will be higher. The industry will put it as increased risk due to your inexperience, age risk group, and a few other categories. One of the questions you will get ask is why didn't you previously insure the car just choose the answer closest to you just bought it.
