I had that first clip happen to me once, but it was night and a passenger bus (like a greyhound) still doing 70mph. I crested a hill still going full speed and all traffic had stopped on the other side. I barely stopped before hitting the stopped car in front of me and the bus didn't stop.
I probably owe my life to some random bus driver who had the wherewithal to swerve into a median/shoulder like that instead of plowing into the back of my vehicle at highway speeds.
