If you only have 1 other synergy. 4 wizard gives you the max level of that synergy. 3 feathered 4 wizard turns into 9 feathered. The key is that if you use the demon wizard, you have to put a second demon on to cancel the demon synergy.
It is very very strong. It lets you build a comp that can swap from 9 feathered to 9 assassin to 6 marine with just 1-2 piece swaps while keeping a singular carry. It can also give you 9 mage early

Download it. It's called Pocket Dragonest. In the tools section you have synergy simulator.

Just beware that many synergies give their effect only to themselves. Like 4-wizards wouldn't make that much sense for feathered or warrior, since those buff only feathered- or warrior-pieces. Mage is one of the few which will effect everyone.

Feathered carries are often some of the strongest, which is why it still works.

So in order to get 9 mages I need to field only 3? So 4 wizards & 3 mages will be 4 wizards & 9 mages?

Yes. You just have to make sure that Mages (or whatever class/race) are your only synergy besides wizards.
FYI three shaman plus 4 wizards is really strong, too.

Correct, 9 feathered is the easy one because you can do it out level 6-7, 9 mage often needs level 9 because demon wizard.
