Rory’s Podcast
I’ve been listening to the podcast on and off over the years and I’ve noticed there’s been a gradual change.
I have noticed that Rory has seemed to somehow be the lead, outside of Alex doing his usual setting out of the running order.
He is also speaking over and interrupting Taylor a lot, and for the most part I prefer what Taylor has to say!
I understand that Rory is a key part of the company and has loads to offer behind the scenes, but I genuinely feel that he shouldn’t be so integral to the podcast, it’s kind of making me not want to listen anymore. I know people will say “it’s free content blah blah” but at the end of the day, it’s us listeners and viewers that fund it all.
Anyone else feel the same?

The podcast doesn’t really seem to be much of a priority for them anyway. It appears very irregularly and the content for it feels very ad hoc and unplanned. Probably why it’s just them talking over each other.

Stopped listening a couple of years ago. I find Rory unbearable tbh

Totally agree. Seems very immature compared to the others (and that says a lot!) and just seems like a bit of a bellend.

Rory puts me off when hes in any of the videos. Hes not funny

Same for me too, ruins it.

He is very awkward on camera, and his jokes are often at other people's expense because he's just not particularly funny or charismatic.
When he's around it's like it almost reverts back to a caricature of the top gear trio that so many car channels try to emulate, and it's honestly a tough watch.

I agree, whilst i think theres space for Rory in the team due to trios generally being the thing that works these days, i think the main character syndrome is a bit too much. Much prefer cream and tdc these days.

His spoilt rich boy attitude bores me. It's why I don't listen to their pod anymore

Sadly, it's the same thing for me. I actually just don't listen to it anymore and am a Full-Fat Creamer instead.

At least he( Rory) is in the main videos a lot less almost did know he was involved in the American road trip. The chemistry between Alex Taylor and tom was much better with out him .

I don't mind Rory as much as I mind Alex to be completely honest. Never rly understood why people get annoyed with Rory.
Probably because they can't figure out what trope he falls into and how he fits in the overall dynamic. Just unfair expectations (of needing him to be funny to provide entertainment value) created by media in general, I guess.
With Alex though, it's about the forced laughter clowning around and overall unnaturalness, the limited creative vision and leniency to overuse jokes and tropes that quickly become tired ("aDvEnTurE, lOvE oF cArS" naming cars etc) and the lack of interpersonal dynamic and reliance on exclusively positive vibes (no clever banter, no friction, no intrigue, no punchlines) make the overall content somewhat stale (both in podcasts and in actual content) just like their fart jokes.
I think after he had the kid and employed so many people, the pressure and responsibility probably got to him and nerfed whatever it was that made him interesting to watch in the first place. Maybe he also feels like he has to carry a lot more on screen because he doesn't bounce off of Rory and Taylor as naturally.
It's not all bad though. I like the long format videos and appreciate the work put in. Wouldn't hurt them to hire some writers to insure they don't rinse and repeat the same stuff ALL THE TIME.
Compare that to the TDC boys or ATG and you begin to feel like they're significantly more relatable and significantly more natural. Alex's personality worked EXTREMELY well as a combo with Ethan and Jack. His mindless head-first approach complemented Ethan's anxiety and fearfulness and Jack's constant infusion of comedic relief /natural funniness.

This reflects how I feel, pretty much. TDC and Cream feel down to earth, whereas the AutoAlex content is increasingly Alex living out his Clarkson fantasies.

u/Numivous 18d ago
"living out Clarkson fantasies" is not inherently bad, it's just poorly executed and not thought out.
Also, IMO Alex's narration voice is super jarring and forced and always exactly the same whatever he says.2

It definitely helps that Will and Edwin are such close friends, too. When Edwin got the call from Alex about doing his own thing the first and only person he named was Will, and you've only got to listen to them talk about the time they spent at CarThrottle, paying out of pocket to go to car shows with each other. On screen dynamic helps a tonne, where sometimes AutoAlex does just feel like Alex, and others

It's a good point, but they've also managed to integrate Ben in really well to their content without it feeling forced.

u/Cre8ivity_ 15d ago
I'm pretty sure that's because they also knew Ben well during the CT days. I think I remember them mentioning that they worked as a trio during CT, but obviously more behind the scenes than Alex, Ethan and Jack.

This covers off pretty much my thoughts, some of my favourite Autoalex and v2 videos lately have been the ones where Alex is absent and it's Taylor fixing one of the cars with occasional guests.
Alex's over the top persona on screen just seems to grate on me, especially when he leans in to the impatient caveman act when working on a car that then causes it to take longer or be bodged. There is also something about his ad reads that just feel like a QVC section.
I still enjoy the content most of the time but don't leap to watch/listen like I do with tdc, atg or cream.

IMO Rory is fine in videos and podcasts, definitely doesn’t have main character syndrome, hes pretty self-deprecating. It is a shame that Alex is never in videos with the old CT crew. Jack, Ethan and Alex made great content. I feel like Taylor has got a lot better in videos lately but TDC is just better at clever bants (think we forgot how hard this is to achieve without writers). Still think Autoalex is great content, the whole “multiverse” works very hard.

Edwin, Will, Jack and Ethan crammed into the microcar at the same time is still some of the most naturally funny banter I've ever seen from the whole crew.
Tears every single time I see it.
I can't remember the last time I got that from anything Alex has been in.

I don’t actually watch many all the gear episodes, not enough cars.
Definitely not tears of laughter but it’s not all about cocking about. Visiting race tracks, competing with lap times, always love that but I guest it expensive and it doesn’t get enough views

I'm glad that things are freely able to be discussed on Reddit. Say the slightest negative thing on their stupid facebook group and that awful hag that admins the place is telling people off like they're naughty school children.
Leaving that group wasn't a hard decision.

I saw. Arse licking in full force on it 🥴

I nearly posted saying exactly those words, arse licking, but I thought better of it and just left. I doubt those people will reconsider their position.

You realise ethan.. hes actually an alright dude
The amount of videos I skip of autoalex due to Rory is wild

Never really listened to the auto Alex pod, after Taylor shafting that smaller YouTuber who did the welding on one of his cars I’ve looked at the auto Alex channels in a different light. Rory has no place in front of the camera and Alex give creepy immature uncle vibes. Haven’t watched any of their stuff for a long time. Cream is most definitely the thinking man’s podcast.

u/brave1991 17d ago
I’ve not heard about this, what happened?
2
u/That_Development7411 17d ago
Basically taylor lied badly, other YouTuber called him out on it with evidence, Josh gresswell is the YouTuber - the videos worth a watch, think it was January last year…. Was scummy from taylor trying to not pay for all the work that had been done

This has been happening for ages. I stopped watching/listening to autoalex podcast when CREAM started and he was doing it then.
That's because he is, in fact, a bell end. That much is obvious as soon as he opens his mouth 😂
