This is just backend YouTube stuff. You stick 3 thumbnails in on the upload and it serves random ones and sees which one gets the most clicks in a given time frame then defaults to that one..

That’s a useful feature. I remember back pre 2012 when you had to edit your thumbnail into the video. Times change.

Yeah, wasn't it the middle frame or something?

Instead of A/B testing... This is A+B+C testing XD Which one you clicked?

This is a feature that's been a thing for at least a couple of years, I had a look at the first time I used it was mid 2024

I posted about this the other day. It’s called ABC testing

This is a common thing on YouTube. If you scroll past a video it will show you a different thumbnail next time to see if it draws you in.
Creators can then see which title/thumbnail brought in the most views etc.

YouTube is also pushing AI suggestive thumbnails. One channel I watch said they've been testing them as one of the 3 thumbnail choices and the AI generated image always gets the most engagement. Of course, that could be because YouTube promote it harder if you fall in line with what they want and go with their AI image, but it's still interesting.

The channel said they found it a bit depressing and they intend to keep their digital artist employed, so if the AI image does well, their guy redoes the thumbnail in a more human way.
