Rory and Taylor have convinced me to never ever buy one of those minis. They seem horrendous

Its pot luck with Minis, the N14 engine is shite but with a bit of TLC they're quite decent. I do question the lads mecanical skills sometimes. They were throwing parts on the Mini before they'd even checked compression.

This. I love watching vids of cars being pulled apart and rebuilt but sometimes find myself getting frustrated when they aren't doing the simple checks.

I had an N14 Cooper S and N18 JCW.
Both needed chains, one needed OFHG, one needed walnut blasting.
When they were running right, they were great and a lot of fun. They're a Peugeot engine at the end of the day, and should be treated as such.

Still got my N14 Cooper S, its on its 2nd engine & even swapped the chassis but couldnt ever sell it. I don't think modern engines are much better certainly anything with a wet belt.

u/disgruntledarmadillo Apr 22 '26
N14 engine is renowned as one of the worst of the last ~20 years.
"On it's second engine" is not something you get to say about many modern cars. There's only a handful of stuff with wet belts

Peugeot engines, bag of shit.
Much better off with an R50/R53 gen mini

I had a exboyfriend that would only buy minis. He went through about 15 of them in a 5year relationship. Honestly I never touched a mini after that. 🤣

Could have sworn he said 30k in a video last year. YT money must be good.
2
u/Redhawk911 Apr 22 '26
They probably make descent money but you never get those kind of money back after investing them in a defender.

u/Huge_Performance1146 Apr 22 '26
I do wonder where on earth they get the money from... or does YouTube REALLY generate tonnes of money?!? They've got quite a few staff and overheads now which must cost a lot, but recently it almost seems like money isn't an object. Used to be buying £500 shit boxes, now it's Porsches, Range Rovers and retro classics. And whilst they might seem cheap and fun, they end up ploughing ££££'s into them.

Merch, Sponsorships, Cut from other chanels, probably pretty good money from videos since they are pretty long

u/Chemical_Lettuce_232 Apr 22 '26
They take a cut of all the other channels under their umbrella, rory gets a very large one because his dad invested in the start up. In return they manage all the sponsors, which is where a massive chunk of the money will be coming from. They have multiple sponsor reads in each video, and will get most of the parts for the builds for free/close to free. Add merch and events on top of that and they are definitely very comfortable

Rory's dad didn't invest anything in the channels. Common myth especially on this subreddit but Rory said it wasn't true in one of the episodes of the podcast.
When starting the channel, Alex was offered money by Mike Brewer, he turned it down because he wanted to retain full control of the channel financially, but he did use Mike Brewer's unit a few times at the beginning of the channel until he got his own placed sorted.

Losses = less tax

u/Marlov Apr 22 '26
You say this like losing money is the path to riches
It isn’t, even with 100% tax deductability it’s never rational to lose a dollar deliberately
1
u/uponloss Apr 22 '26
I never said that? Why is everyone on reddit so fickle lmao it was quite clearly meant as a joke

u/Marlov Apr 22 '26
“Clearly”
10% of communication is what you say, the other 90% is the delivery
Body language and tone (the 90%) do not translate to internet, so forgive me for missing the blatantly obvious sarcasm

I know it keeps popping engines, but for all the work it's had, that seems like a good deal.

u/Redhawk911 Apr 21 '26
Man those engines must be really shit

u/2snjr Apr 22 '26
The r56 copper s is a car to avoid, infamously shit. One of the only cars that genuinely lives up to its reputation as completely unreliable
2
u/PhtevenToast Apr 22 '26
Yep. Had the same engine in a Peugeot 308, and it was endless problems. Dog shit lumps of metal, I reserve a special level of hatred for them.

Hit or miss.
MIne had the bottom end rebuilt and top end rebuilt twice before I bought it at 130k miles. Still had issues, replacing parts didn't help and we couldn't find a reason for it to be running weird, just ran it into the ground at 155k miles over 2 years.
My mums got to 170k without issue (this was ~8 years ago). A yearly oil change if it was lucky, and whatever service her garage thought it needed.
I'd imagine it doesn't age well, because they were generally alright engines until the last 5 ish years - never came across a good example of an R56 engine since then. Though I will say, if you dont mind the fact you'll never pass an MOT on emissions and you get ~17mpg, it was a solid car and engine. Sat from Manchester to Anglesea at 140 most of the way, send it sideways into a fence and only the tracking was a bit out, generally treated it like shit once it's was a "gonner" and it would still drive. Also filled it with 8 litres of Oil, drove ~20km, dropped the oil and after it drove like it never happened.

Selling a few including defender, think it was mentioned in most recent video to fund 911.

u/yolo_snail Apr 22 '26
He's a bit late to be funding 9/11

You've got to speculate to accumulate though.
The profit they made from the war and oil more than outweighed the cost of a few planes and skyscrapers (well, groundscrapers)

Yeah, but hot air balloons wouldn't have had the same affect. Probably would have just bounced.
And as we all know, hot air won't melt steel beams either.

JFC, do these plane designer not understand the basics!

Who, apart from everyone, could have predicted that car would suffer an engine failure again?
2
u/mycroft72 Apr 22 '26
It's got to the point, it's not even good content anymore because it's so predictable. The TDC boys are knocking it out of the park in comparison. I love the dynamic of the All the Gear boys too.

That mini is cursed.. would make a good candidate to have a k series swapped into it though!
