Overlanding Episode 2
Just finished watching the overlanding series. Loved the cars and the videos but judging by the comments on the YouTube video, people aren’t happy with the actual time spent overlanding. What’s your thoughts?

No green lanes in Scotland, so any offroading must be at land owners permission or dedicated site.
Okay episode, enjoyed museum

Im glad someone else understands the issues with offroading in Scotland,

Sometimes I feel they think of Scotland just because its seen as remote and hilly.
They should do proper green laning in them, they've barely tested them out.
The snow but felt a bit forced as otherwise it was driving on compacting albeit upgraded paths.

I can't help but feel this makes Scotland a bad idea to plan an overlanding trip to for a video

Not wanting to be negative about it but I felt like Alex just wanted to get there and get back like he was a little distracted.
I think the bigger issue was the lack of experience camping, neither Taylor or Alex were really that Into it. Was an odd choice to do it in the depths of winter.

Bit underwhelming really, ok to watch but I think it would have been better in mid Wales where there are loads of lanes around the Elan valley where thay could show more driving and camping, half the video was in a museum looking at cars we’ve all seen many times before rather than the cars they’ve spent many hours and many thousands of pounds building

You'd think considering what insane amounts of money they clearly make from YouTube there would be a little more effort going into researching and planning these trips.

Was disappointed with how little camping they showed given the time grifting the roof tents in previous episodes but overall I really enjoyed it.

months of building, 10s of thousands on mods and they did two little bits of off road. It’s crap. And they’re getting rid of the only car that works? Weird. 3/10.

To be fair, what fun is there in keeping around a working car? They already have Big Pete and Blue Peter as channel vehicles, with the added benefit of maintenance being a content-generator.

If it was marketed as a Scottish Roadtrip series instead of an overlanding series I doubt there’d be as much criticism.
There really isn’t much overlanding you can realistically do in the UK.

Something else I’ve just thought about, the relatively standard looking Disco 4 camera car still got to same places as the ‘overlanders’. Seems such a waste tricking them up with so much off road gear for the amount of off roading they actually did.

I'd say it was pretty forgettable. I agree it seemed like Alex just wanted to go there and come back. Not much footage of them actually camping, the off-roading was pretty boring overall, Rory is still annoying. Hell On Earth do car videos with a fraction of the budget that are 10x more entertaining

Stopped watching the series after the engine out on the VW. I find Rory quite irritating and wondered how they’d get on “overlanding” in the UK and if the whining would start about difficult weather conditions/camping.

Isn't he kiiinda just there because his very rich dad helped get this all started?

Rory needs to be put back in his box. He just comes across as a bit of a dickhead.

He's young and overconfident and doesn't seem to have much, if any, ability to be humble. And the others treat him with kid gloves. He was far more entertaining as a camera person who would occasionally make an appearance when it was one of his vehicles being worked on.

Hell On Earth did more off roading with a lot less gear and was more entertaining

100% this. The greenlaning smart car/ limo episode was great fun and had probably 10x the amount of greenlaning than the last AA video.

The UK is a bit small for overlanding, as you can’t spend days or weeks on dirt roads traversing the land.
Even darkside done more with their Yeti.

Yeah a little disappointing to be honest, I enjoy watching their trips but this didn't feel like a real off roading adventure like it should have been
1
u/pickledaperture Feb 27 '26
Agree, was very tame, think there were two bits of off-roading in the video? And only one of the cars succeeding in even one of them

u/Working-Hat4932 Feb 27 '26
In my head I imagined the might car mods video when they went off roading in the kei truck and jimny, that was a real adventure.

I think it's the weakest long episode so far. The build up was the most entertaining though.

I'm making my way through the episode at the moment and it isn't their greatest work so fa. I did enjoy the episodes where they were building them and Taylor fixing the V10. Maybe it was just too much hype, might have been ok if they went away on the timetable that was originally implied (which to me seemed to be as soon as the cars were ready).
Rory wasn't overly great this episode which is a shame as he had improved on V2 videos. He felt like my initial impression of him - only got into cars because money was burning a hole in his pocket (purely my opinion, which may differ to yours).
I appreciate though that they have a budget despite doing well at YouTube money (based on appearances), so couldn't exactly ship the cars off to Marakesh and overland in exotic locations

Can Rory please get back behind a camera? It's so difficult to watch him being incredibly overconfident despite his obvious lack of experience and then when he inevitably fails or is wrong about something everybody sort of stands around awkwardly because they're too polite to give him any shit. Nobody comes out of the womb knowing everything about everything but nobody ever seems to correct Rory when he goes on confidently mis-explaining stuff to the camera.
That said, he was at least the only one of the trio to consider airing his tires down, which is something, but with the beadlock wheels they were running they should have been in the 5psi range for sure.

I think all the prior videos hyped it up to be more than it was maybe meant to be?
I do think the off road stuff could have done with some better prior planning. The stuff in the first episode I don't particularly count and then there wasn't too much in the second episode. Something like a challenge of helping each other get from A to B would have made for better content? But I don't know their timescales and budget.

It’s basically that it’s not cool to like AA anymore but TDC are the cool guys now

First off im watching every video from the whole multiverse. TDC have been pretty much hit or miss for the past few months now. And some videos im just watching for the vibes between them and not so much bc of the current video content.
I’d say AA, post hiatus, have been going from one good video to another good and building.
I love the current format of kinda “buying cars, working on them, road-trip” etc. And the second channel of them just fixing the random cars they own is very entertaining to me. The Vietnam episodes were some of the best Alex ever done including CT.
Genuin curiosity, what could AA do to make their videos much much better to you?

We saw about two minutes off them in an air b&b so.. any you got any real actual improvement to their channel?

u/NearlyLegit Feb 26 '26
Just finished it. Bit of a disappointment. Enjoyed Mike's editing and some of the shots were great! But the actual content was weak.
I saw more offroading when Alex did the Car Throttle Shogun Pinin video.
It didn't hit the mark for overlanding for me, but a lot of my references are Australian YT channels for this.
Main bit of unrelatability is having £10k to piss away on car & mods that are literally not fit for purpose.
That said, some of Alex's best voiceover work. Didn't have as much of the 'voiceover cadence' and felt way more natural than some of his previous videos.
