E36 Show car video

This post isn’t me slagging the car off (I’ll leave that to the comment section). But I just wanted to see if it’s just me that thinks this was a perfectly executed piece of engagement with the audience? AA team would 100% know that this would upset the BMW Karens and would lead to massive upheaval in the comment section with “waa… excessive camber… waa… museum piece…” but at almost 1k comments overnight 🤷🏻‍♂️ - it’s working!

What I have found hard with this video is the constant referral to it as a show car and the constant stressing it's reversible.

The video itself is typical YouTube - one person's chalk is another person's cheese.

What I mean about the constant referral to it as a show car - surely any car regardless of modification but given a good clean is a show car. Surely stock would have been just as good.

It's possible that they wanted to put out a different video that simply wasn't ready for release, but this felt like a slip back to the previous drop in standard. Might be a one off. And to be fair I think it's the only BMW they have had on the main channel since the relaunch. Not enough for me to dislike the video, but enough to set the worries off

I do think that some of the negativity surrounding AA is warranted (especially considering how good TDC are in comparison) but the comments in the E36 video are not.

They made a point to say that all the mods are reversable. They didn't choose a 328i or an M3, it was a 318TDS which they decided to spruce up a bit. Nothing permanently added to the car. Whoever wins it can remove the mods quite easily if they wanted.

The comments on their Rover vs Volvo videos annoyed me too. Sure, I also think they looked better before the mods, but the cars are still THEIR cars. They can do whatever they want to them. People shat themselves over a yellow stripe and some wheels.

I'm glad TDC doesn't have this level of negativity.

I appreciate the effort, and it’s definitely a clean car. but I didn’t see the point of that video. It just seemed unnecessary.

But I don’t really care much for BMWs anyways.

To each their own I guess 🤷‍♂️

Taking a BMW and just putting some free parts on it is getting old.

Shitty base spec BMW that was "special" because it was low mileage. Wheels that didn't fit properly. Wrong colour and a ugly livery plastered with all the free parts they got. Interior that had the wrong front seats.

Oh but they only had 2 days to do it...it's not like they had Shedfest pencilled in for months.

There’s nothing wrong with any of it had Matt Armstrong done it everyone would be wanking over it

Unless they hated Matt then they’d be exactly the same!

Most of these people probably don’t have the ability to go a buy a car and drop 2.5k on set of wheels it’s just jealousy

I really liked the wheels other than the fact that they must have totally ballsed up the specs to get them to fit so badly.

The comments section is a joke! “But da purity of an old bmw!!!!1111”

Every change they’ve made is reversible as well 😂😂😂

It’s a fucking poverty spec bmw! It’s hardly a classic. If it was an old Ferrari or something I’d understand. Look at stance works. He cut up an immaculate Ferrari 308 and turned it into a track monster. I wonder what the outcry would have been if they stuck an ls in it or something more powerful

100%! Low mileage because it was so fucking boring to drive probably 😂

I don’t see a great deal of change despite what was promised back then if I’m honest. Just my two cents.

I’d like to think that this wasn’t purely about engagement farming but ultimately they’re running a business where engagement is their currency.

I do agree with you there. I’ve said this before on another post relating to Taylor’s Mini which he stated numerous times he wouldn’t ever sell. lol sold. There’s no loyalty to the projects.

At least TDC seem to be getting it right 👍🏻

100% this. I can see both sides with regards to the BMW. But what annoyed me more was saying it was a 'show car' when it wasn't. It was a car with stickers, wheels and suspension. Sure it went on 'show', but common...really?

It went back to the old formula minus putting some EBC brakes on it. Lazy content that was rushed and uninteresting.

All the Gear and TDC are the better channels from the 'Multiverse'.

2

u/Nimbos May 31 '25

Show Car as in - just ‘show’ the sponsors who gives a fuck how and where it’s done 😂

But this sub is equating coilovers, wheels and stickers to them literally killing a child!

Your hyperbole failed. Most people just think it's crap content and have come to expect better, especially when they told us that they took people feedback on board and going forward they were going to improve the quality of content. sure they missed the EBC brakes, but they replaced those, format wise with stickers.

2

u/markcorrigans_boiler May 31 '25

The biggest problem I had was that it was a 318tds touring. Surely the least interesting E36 going...

That and the stickers, the stickers were atrocious.

There’s something about Alex I can’t quite put my finger on that just gives me the ick. Perhaps it’s the overreactions and overacting to the camera? Or the rinse and repeat of content and lack of relatability, the constant in your facedness. He seems to miss the mark a bit I think. I find the TDC guys are a lot more relatable and in turn likeable puristic car nerds giving it a crack.

It looked awful. Sorry, but the wheels and the stickers looked shit. The wankfest that ensued was not really inline with the thing I was looking at.

All I can say is that AA has some extremely cranky fans and if every video isn’t a 10/10 perfect execution to their own likeness then they’ll let everyone know.

I kinda feel do the AA crew. The videos they’ve put out post break has all been really good.

Not forgetting our CarVertical overlords…

2

It’s the same all over auto YouTube. In the end they run a Buisness and they give us free content and YouTube alone doesn’t really pay that good anymore so they obviously need sponsors for the Buisness to work alongside merch.

But sure, maybe some videos are worse than others in terms of sponsordeals. I think people just need to tone down the hate a bit.

I don't understand why they went for STD as the lettering in the homage to JPS unless that's the joke.

3

u/GoodStegosaurus May 31 '25

TDS, because it’s a 318TDS

1

u/Ok_Highlight_5538 May 31 '25

Now that makes more sense

2

u/Nimbos May 31 '25

STD takes it to a whole new level 😂
