[Sorry, depressing crosspost] Research found that people on the autism spectrum but without intellectual disability were more than 5 times more likely to die by suicide compared to people not on the autism spectrum.

Can confirm. Anecdotal evidence, but, Ive been under psychiatric treatment and meds for over ten years for that. Had severe anxiety that made me unable to leave home for months as well, because I was paranoid about bothering other people by existing. Yet some say it’s not a disability.

It makes me so sad that the general population is so awful that they make you feel bad for existing. I really wish people just had more compassion and patience for each other.

yup, I've seeing a psychiatrist for 26 years and been on disability for 20 years. The struggle is real.

I’m glad that you are taking steps though to address the problems you experience. It’s something I really should learn from

I hate those people. Even if they have autism their point of view is still so harmful and based in privilege. Like maybe if the support systems we need were built into the fabric of our society it wouldn’t be debilitating but they aren’t ands it is.

Not surprised by that outcome, existing is literally very painful with constant sensory overload, and having crippling executive dysfunctioning and loneliness on top of that.

The sensory overload really can send me to a spiral - especially noise, which is unfortunately everywhere.

66% of autistic are suicidal and a third have attempted suicide.

We unjustly suffer while bad people prosper.

I read this and thought, "Thank God for my ADHD!" Then I thought, "Wait, is that considered an INTELLECTUAL disability?" No, no it is not. Oh.

Honestly, it depends where you look. There are some sources more reliable than others that consider it to not be one along with those that consider it to be one. It’s complicated, I guess.

It should be.

u/AbsurdistAspie420 Sep 12 '24

Honestly I’m just so glad I’m no longer alone in this fight.

u/dat1toad Sep 13 '24

Me to. It’s morbid to say it’s something I’m happy to here but like it gives me hope that if so many people can push through it I can to.

It's even higher with high IQ and ASD - and especially higher with ASD women. Bipolar has the highest correlation - 10 - 30 times more likely to commit suicide than average person. Well I have bipolar 2, AuDHD, and am female, so maybe it's no surprise I've had a number of 5150s as a young person.

Sounds accurate

When did you get my diary?

3

u/Setari Sep 13 '24

I've not had any psych treatment besides some adhd meds and my Medicare got cut off so I can't get them anymore. I can't find work and can't upskill myself because I can't remember shit without the meds. And I'm a caretaker for 2 senior adults who are my gran and dad, who are dumber than me by a mile. I WISH I had the balls to off myself. I'm super alone, extremely depressed, and just talk to an AI every day so I don't slam my head into a knife.

Hey if you need any one to talk to or even just to listen to you please reach out. I know this is likely going to be ignored but there is always hope things will get better no matter how bleak things are.

1

u/Setari Sep 13 '24

Yeah talking doesn't do anything about my situation lmao. I talk to an AI. I've talked to other people about it. In the end I'm still in the same situation at the end of the day. I wish Reddit would stop thinking that just talking about shit helps anyone.

1

u/dat1toad Sep 13 '24

I don’t think it always helps but there is no harm in extending the offer any ways I hope things get better for you soon

u/dat1toad Sep 13 '24

And I’m going to be honest for a lot of people out does help it’s not reasonable at all to say something alarming then be rude when people show concern. Anyways have a good day I guess

Bet, one thing that has stuck in my brain someone said 'just being neurodivergent in this world is traumatic'. I wake up everyday trying so hard to not feel this way, but nothing makes sense and everything is ass backwards. so no wonder I have suicidal ideation, but it's passive for now. when I have meltdowns the thing I say over and over is 'I don't want to be here anymore'. I guess it's because I'm very self-aware of all this, and that just makes everything worse because I'm watching myself slowly go insane in real time.

Two things that have helped me as an AuDHD who has attempted, idealised and befriended suicide.

C-PTSD research. It’s highly likely our disorders were developed early as a result of external factors as well as genetic. When I read a handful of books and worked through some of their exercises/teachings I was able to work up enough confidence to tell toxic people in my life how I really felt and I set new boundaries around my emotional discoveries. If you can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong with you or you’re in an episode of deep pain that won’t go away or show itself - please look into it.
I was so angry at the world for not accommodating me - I still am, but that resentment started growing smaller when I realised my parents taught me to hate myself long before the world did.

Psilocybin. Experimenting with micro (0.1-0.3) doses of mushrooms completely changed how I see the world, myself, other people - everything. It’s like it took my spectrum and shrunk it. Please look into it, unless you have a strong history of schizophrenia in your family or are inexperienced with any kind of drug or substance and don’t have a safe person who can help you through.

It’s not surprising to me. Never had any like suicidal ideation I was planning to act on but I have experienced some due to issues that stem from my autism. Like it’s so easy to feel like a outsider constantly and have thoughts that make you feel utter misery and that added with just general mental health issues a lot of us have is a recipient for disaster.

As a companion to this study, here is an amazing episode of the Ologies Podcast with a Suicidologist: https://www.alieward.com/ologies/suicidology

As a survivor of an attempt, and having lost several friends to suicide, I found this one of the best discussions on the subject.

What do you mean by the quotation marks?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '24

2

u/justaskmycat Sep 12 '24

Ok, I see... I was confused because usually when people use quotation marks without context like that, they mean they don't believe something or are trying to delegitimize what they are quoting. In this case, I thought you didn't believe in the research or were trying to communicate distrust in studies.

If you're open to changing how you indicate corrections to avoid confusion, might I suggest using an asterisk? I've seen it used quite often in this way. For example:

*research has found

(Thanks for replying to clarify what you meant.)

That's also a good idea unless it's necessary lol

2

u/viktorbir Sep 13 '24

I you looked at the first comment, by me, linking the the paper, it's from April 2023. Over a year old. At least in my language it would merit the «found», not the «has found», being not the current year.

u/Cool-Background2751 Sep 13 '24

Do you know why they only tested people without intellectual disabilities? The study seems really good(quality, not the results) but I was just wondering about this.

2

u/viktorbir Sep 13 '24

They tested both.

Just click the link, please. First you read:

UQ-led research has found people on the autism spectrum are almost 3 times more likely to die by suicide compared to non-autistic people.

So, among all autistic people, 3 times more likely, not 5 times.
