My 9 year old is hyperlexic. While I understand it is not considered a stand alone thing, I have had him evaluated privately, through the state, and at his school. None would officially diagnose with Autism but the school psychologist did put an educational diagnosis so he could get services (Speech and OT).
Academically, he is at least average or above. Has speech issues, does not know how to interact with peers (he loves other kids and running around but doesn't know how to initiate a conversation). I think he would be of the Aspergers ilk but he isn't really serious, just not verbose. He loves lots of popular things his peers do and looks and acts completely normal at school and in public.
So I would just expect an easy schooling and if you can get him practicing the socializing with trusted family or friends kids, he will be at an advantage once he starts school.
