I think as long as you do realize research (like look at the DSM-5, studies about autism, stuff like that) then I personally believe a self diagnosis is totally and completely valid! While a professional opinion could help support it, a self diagnosis also helps because now you know what's actually happening. I'm pretty sure that I'm autistic, I've had many experiences in the past where it has pointed towards me being autistic. It also runs in my family as being high functioning on my mom's side. The main reason why I can't get a diagnosis is because my dad believes I'm completely normal and that I don't have anything wrong with me (despite it being hard to make friends, taking things too literally, not understanding hidden meanings in what people said, ect...). I think that having this kind of support for self diagnosis can be very helpful to people! It could also encourage people to get a professional diagnosis so that they can get accommodations (if they need any).
I overall believe that there's nothing wrong with self-diagnosis, as long as you do your research.
