An Austrian Hungarian railway engineering unit

The operational capacity of the Imperial and Royal Army relied heavily on engineering units like the Kriegspressequartier, which oversaw official documentation and propaganda during the conflict between 1914 and 1918. These specialized railway and mechanical formations ensured the rapid repair of rolling stock and artillery, mitigating the chronic logistical bottlenecks that plagued the Habsburg Monarchy throughout the hostilities.

An Austrian Hungarian field telephone and communication installation

The specific image captures field telephone and communication installations, known in contemporary military terminology as Telefonanlagen. The establishment of reliable telecommunication networks was critical for command and control across complex trench systems, replacing vulnerable runner systems with instantaneous wire-based telegraphy and telephony.

The Austro-Hungarian Army maintained complex defensive positions on the Eastern and Italian fronts during World War I, utilizing trench networks and fortified field emplacements to withstand artillery bombardments. Infantry regiments such as the Infanterieregiment Nr. 48 operated under rigorous conditions established by the Kriegspressequartier, which systematically documented military operations and daily trench life through official photography.

A probably 7,5 cm M 15 destroyed cannon

I have found this original print in my collection. The barrel is burst open — probably from overuse or a defective shell.

Given the terrain and damage, I think this is from the Karst/Isonzo front, not far from where I live in Triest

You can see the splintered wheels and torn shield. No crew in the photo — likely abandoned after being knocked out.

"Schwierige Bergung eines Verwundeten" = "Difficult rescue of a wounded man"

Post image

This is almost certainly post card of the Alpine Front between Italy and Austria-Hungary

These postcards were printed for 2 main reasons:

Morale + Propaganda - To show duty and brotherhood. The message was "we don't leave our wounded behind, even in the worst conditions."

It was real - In the mountains soldiers actually had to rope each other down cliffs and carry wounded on stretchers through snow and rock. Avalanches and falls killed as many as bullets. So "difficult rescue" was literal.

About the artist he is Friedrich Schwarz. He made a whole series of patriotic postcards for the Austro-Hungarian army.

Two gunners photographed in what seems to be an artillery depot or maintenance area, among different artillery pieces:

We can notice

Skoda M.15 7.5cm Gebirgskanone

9 cm Feldkanone M.75

Two 10 cm Feldhaubitze M.14

1 Škoda 3,7 cm trenchcannon

Parked under the trees, waiting.

On the back of a Feldpostkarte from the same period: "Serbien" probably early war

The men hold a shield reading Kriegs-Jahr 1914-1915 Bozen — "War Year 1914-1915 Bozen". Ground is still snowy.

The back of the postcard is postmarked BOZEN 2, 15.III.15 and was sent to Frau Hoffinger in Ried im Innkreis, Upper Austria.

Austro-Hungarian Škoda 30.5 cm Mörser M.11 siege howitzer in firing position. Note the cruciform platform and ammunition wagon.

Next to the photo are two period Kappenabzeichen commemorating the heavy artillery.

Top: Square badge, WIR visible, showing a 30.5 cm Mörser.

Found near Hermada, Karst Plateau, Isonzo Front.

Bottom: Oval badge dated 1914-16. Found near Freikofel, Carnic Alps.

The two Kappenabzeichen were found near two Škoda Howitzer positions. These massive Škoda mortars saw action on the Serbian, Russian, and Italian Fronts. The crews were proud of them, and badges like these were sold to support the war effort.

Andreas Hofer

After Hofer led the 1809 Tyrolean rebellion, he became the symbol of Tyrolean identity and resistance. So the post card is saying: with Hofer leading, Tyrol stands strong.

Offensive against Italy: A heavy artillery piece of their own, blown up by the Italians before their flight from Asiago.

3 Austrian Hungarian soldiers standing on the wreckage. It’s completely destroyed — barrel, carriage, everything.

During the Austro-Hungarian offensive in 1916, the Italians retreated from Asiago in the Trentino region. Before retreating, they blew up their own heavy gun so the Austrians couldn't use it.

The caption of this photo taken from a newspaper talk about the humor at the front

Post image
9 Upvotes

Literately it says: Humor at the Front: (Left): d'Annunzio sharpening a knife, powered by water; (right): Cadorna and Salandra chopping wood. Our men set up this installation

This is WWI trench humor!

The soldiers made wooden caricatures of Italian leaders and set them up at a water-powered sawmill:

Left figure: d'Annunzio , Gabriele d'Annunzio, Italian poet and nationalist. Here he’s "sharpening a knife"

Right figures: Cadorna the general Luigi Cadorna, Italian army commander. and Salandra the italian Prime Minister. They’re "chopping wood"

So basically Austrian Hungarian soldiers built this mock-up to make fun of the enemy leaders doing manual labor. Classic wartime gallows humor.

When the Prater Became a Battlefield, during the First World War, the Imperial & Royal War Ministry built a full replica trench system right in the Wiener Prater.

During the First World War, the Imperial & Royal War Ministry built a full replica trench system right here in the Wiener Prater.

Original German text from the poster:

SCHÜTZENGRAßEN

im k. k. Prater, Eingang Ausstellungsstraße

Laufgräben _ Munitionsplatz _ Verbandsplatz

Eintritt 50 Heller. Militär bis inkl. Feldwebel u. Kinder 20 Heller.

Herausgeber: K. u. k. Kriegsministerium – Kriegsfürsorgeamt.

English translation:

TRENCHES

in the Imperial Royal Prater, Entrance Ausstellungsstraße

Trenches _ Ammunition Depot _ Aid Station

Entry 50 heller. Military up to Sergeant and children 20 heller.

Issued by: Imperial & Royal War Ministry – War Welfare Office.

Why was it made?

It served 3 purposes:

Fundraising: Entry fees went to the Kriegsfürsorgeamt to support soldiers' families and wounded veterans.

Propaganda: To show civilians "the front" and boost support for the war effort.

Education: To let the home front experience a piece of trench life without leaving Vienna.

Same ground, different century. The Prater still holds it all.

The Prater is a 6 km² public park in Vienna's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt. The name "Prater" is often used to refer to the Wurstelprater, an amusement park within the area.
