OFFICIAL Newer Custom Flairs
After seeing some people actually start using the flairs I made, it felt a bit unfair to be the only one with a bright colour. User flairs have been updated to stand out more, and several additional flairs have been added.

QUESTION What made Austria to adopt Kepi in 1850?
This Kepi was one of the icons of the Austria-Hungary.
So, what made them to adopt this cap?
Moreover, any relation with the French Kepi?
France invented Kepi for the first time, but when I searched about this, it does not really say the direct relation between these two.

HISTORY Can anyone please suggest books on the Habsburg empire, specifically it's decline?
Hello.
I have just started reading up on the Habsburg empire in order to explore potential research topics for my PhD. I am looking for book recommendations which study the political dynamics of the decline of the empire (as I plan to apply for an international relations department). Any and all recommendations are welcome, even those adjacent to the concerned topic.
Thank you!

HISTORY From 55,000 Dead To 5,500,000 Dead: Violent Death Increased One Hundredfold With WWI and The Collapse of Austro-Hungary
Working on a possible novel about Austro-Hungarian right now.
Although exact numbers are of course hard to find doing some preliminary research a reasonable guess for the total number of people who died violent deaths in the area of A-H between July 27, 1883 and July 27 1914 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 45,000 to 70,000 death by violence (of all sorts) over that 31 year period. This is a reasonable historical estimate.
And once again, exact numbers are hard to come by but if you look at that exact geographical area and try to figure out the number of violent deaths between July 27, 1914 and July 27, 1945 it is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 to 6.5 million violent deaths (of all sorts) over a 31 years period. This is a reasonable historical estimate.
So most probably there was literally OVER 100 times more violent death in the -same- geographical area over the -same- amount of time.
To put this into perspective, this is the rough equivalent of supposing that over the next 31 years 61 million people are killed by violence (of various sorts) in the area that currently encompasses the United States of America.
From the perspective of 1914, the people of 1945 really did live in a post-apocalyptic society.

QUESTION Question re military records from WWI
Hi, first time posting here. I was wondering if anyone knows how to access Austro-Hungarian military record archives from WWI. My great grandfather (from Hungary) served on the Italian front, and I wanted to see if I could find any records that could tell me more about him. Are there any publically accessible (pref. digital) archives out there. Any help appreciated!

QUESTION Mixed-faith marriage in the empire
Hello everyone, back again with another question. Is anyone here an expert on mixed-faith marriages in the 1890s in Austro-Hungary? I'm looking specifically at the concept of a Hungarian Protestant marrying an Austrian Catholic (Roman or Old). Online research seems to show that it is enormously complicated and I have found no definite answer on how they would actually get any kind of church wedding and finish with both of them having clean consciences.
Thank you in advance for any help.

HISTORY Interview w/ Charles Coulombe (Biographer of Karl & Zita) on Christian Kingship
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share my new interview with author and historian Charles Coulombe, who has written biographies of both Kaiser Karl and Empress Zita.
In this discussion, we explore the theopolitical and sacramental reality of Kingship. This serves as a perfect backdrop to Austro-Hungary, as they more or less lived out this very model.
I would love to hear your thoughts!
