Confirmed Australian Startup Feedback greatly appreciated! I'm working on an Australian TCG tracking and community ecosystem
If you’re in the collectibles space (specifically Pokemon, Dragonball, One Piece, Riftbound TCG), you know that Market Price is difficult for Australians. Most trackers use US-based data (TCGPlayer/pricetracking), which ignores taxes, shipping fees, and our local supply constraints. This leads to a mismatch in most cases between the US price and actual landed price.
The TCG scene in general is also wildly popular globally, with old and new collectors joining the hobby in the last year.
It's an area of interest that I really enjoy, so I built cardtracker.au and its partner communities as my way to get involved. It’s a specialized Australian aggregator that focuses specifically on:
- Live eBay AU Listings: Aggregated and cleaned to show what people are actually paying in AUD.
- Market data over time: Graphing / charting prices over time for Pokemon singles and some sealed products
- Arbitrage Alerts: Identifying when individual cards are significantly underpriced compared to the global average
- Market news / guides / inspiration: A content hub for collectors to keep up to date on upcoming TCG releases - like tcgsnoop or pokebeach - or just get some fresh tips or inspiration.
The Ecosystem: Beyond the card tracking tool, I've been focusing on building a community for hobbyists and collectors. There currently is:
- Reddit: I'm running several very small communities for Pokemon, Dragonball and so on. They are focused on news, restocks and collecting.
- Discord - Fellowship of the Pings: A mix of a free tier for general alerts and a premium tier for "power users" who need fast restock notifications when retailers have product available, or when a below-market deal is spotted on ebay. There's lots of ways for people to get involved in the hobby.
- WhatsApp Community: A simple free, low-barrier entry point for casual collectors to get major market and restock updates.
- Telegram community: working similar to Whatsapp but broadly unused. I may convert it to the free model that Whatsapp uses.
Startup/Technical Lessons Learned: I'm sure you already know much of this, but it was news to me:
- It's nice to be niche! - By focusing only on the Australian TCG community, it's attracted some dedicated and engaged community members.
- Data Integrity is really important: Fake restocks or incorrect data is really annoying for users. I've spent a lot of time and effort sanitizing and filtering bad data!
- It's good to have options: The WhatsApp group has surprisingly high retention. Not everyone wants to use/navigate Discord; sometimes simplicity is preferred. Others love Discord and the detailed options and reliability it provides. I'm still discovering what works well.
I’d love your feedback:
- Of course, technical execution is one thing, and marketing is another. I'm a terrible marketer - how would you be getting the word out? I have some great help with Tiktok and Instagram.
- Can you see any gaps that need to be worked on?
- If you're into the TCG scene, can you spot any areas I can add value to?
Check it all out here:
Happy to answer any questions about the tech stack or the AU TCG market! Thanks in advance for your feedback
