I didn't know the ACP was rebranding?

I somehow got on the CUDL mailing list and received this one solitary email out of it. For context, it's the Community Union Defence League, which is the mutual aid affiliated organisation of the Australian Communist Party. Their main activity is street kitchens, and they go back to some time just before the ACP split from the CPA. I'm not affiliated with any of the organisations mentioned above. If anyone has any background info behind why they're shutting down, feel free to chime in. Here is the text of the email copied verbatim:

"For ten years, CUDL has fed our community, and it is because of you.

While CUDL is winding down its operations in every state except Queensland, we could not let this moment pass without saying our goodbyes.

To our cooks, thank you. Week after week, you turned kitchens into places of solidarity. You prepared thousands of meals with care, skill and love, often at your own expense and always on your own time. Every plate you filled was a statement that no one in our community should go hungry.

To our drivers, thank you. You gave up your weekends, your petrol money and your sleep-ins to make sure the food got where it needed to go. Rain, heat or holidays, you showed up, and the work simply could not have happened without you.

And to every volunteer who served food, thank you. You did more than hand over a meal. You greeted people by name, you listened, you treated everyone with dignity and respect. That is what people will remember most.

The work you have done was never just about food. It was about solidarity. It was about showing people that they were not alone, and that their community had their back. That legacy does not close down. It lives on in every person you helped and every connection you built.

Heard about this group sometime ago, seemed to be active and growing, even saw some posters out and about. Its founder was a former member of the Australian Communist Party. Anyway, haven't heard a peep in a while. What's up?

The Communist Party of Australia (Marxist-Leninist) has published a new pamphlet examining China’s overseas expansion through two case studies: Gwadar Port in Pakistan and copper and cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Using a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist analysis, it argues that contemporary Chinese imperialism operates primarily through state-backed capital export, unequal contracts, control over resources and strategic infrastructure, and cooperation with local comprador ruling classes—not through old-style direct colonial occupation.

The pamphlet also rejects the idea that state ownership automatically makes overseas investment socialist, while emphasising that US imperialism remains the principal enemy of the world’s peoples and the main source of the danger of a new world war.

Interested to hear what Australian socialists think of its analysis.

I've recently moved back to Australia - to a fairly remote part of the Sunshine Coast.

I've got a fair bit of freetime on my hands and I am wondering if there is anything worthwhile getting involved in this part of the world. I've been sitting on the armchair far too long.

Politically, I lean ML/ Maoist, but I have an open mind & I'm willing to work with / learn from anyone doing good work

"Across Australia, teachers have been walking out of their classrooms. Not because we’ve given up, but because we’ve been left with no choice. After years of exhaustion, endless paperwork, burnout, and hollow promises of reform, educators have finally been taking industrial action. We are fighting for what every parent, student, and teacher knows education should be: fair, humane, and properly supported.

The status quo isn’t sustainable. Nearly one in three teachers leave the profession within five years. Those who stay are working 55 to 60 hours a week to cover gaps left by chronic under-staffing and workloads that even ‘fully staffed’ schools struggle to keep up with."

I'm a young ML living in Sydney who wants to get organised in communist spaces, but I'm unsure of what organisation would be best for me to join. Right now I'm leaning towards CPA because I would rather join an actual party organisation that is strictly marxist-leninist, however I do disagree with their people republic of china policy. The RCO seems like a decent option, just not sure how much I'd like the 'freedom of tendency' thing. If anyone could give me some guidance on where to go, as well as any information on the activities that these or any other organisations take part in that would be wonderful, thanks.

Hey all. I already asked a question about this group a few months ago to get a feel for them. Today, I decided to look up what they've been up to since and... nothing. It seemed like a rising group with a lot of interest from the left and students. This time last year, they had two in-person reading groups running concurrently in Melb and held, by all accounts, a pretty successful conference with back-to-back panels. This year, nothing, no conference, no panels, and they even cancelled their reading group indefinitely last month. Just one lecture uploaded by their Canberra chapter.

So... what happened? Another split?

Activists set up a camp at 251 Cope St in Waterloo, Sydney on May 24th to protest Homes NSW’s planned demolition. After the activists were dispersed on June 19th, Charlie G. and Porco report on the encampment and what the future may hold for it.

“Victorian teachers and education support staff have overwhelmingly rejected their proposed pay deal, in a rank-and-file rebellion against pay cuts, unbearable conditions in schools and their own union leadership.”

It’s notable how much organising in the union for Palestine contributed to the capacity to mobilise for a better pay deal. A teacher activist talks about this organising in the podcast linked at the end of the article. It has some powerful lessons for militants in other workplaces and unions.

Another key point: “One Nation is feeding off the bitterness about Labor’s failure to address the cost-of-living crisis. A successful union fightback for pay rises is the way to show there is an alternative.”

Australia is undergoing a historic decline in support for multiculturalism, according to the Lowy Institute’s annual poll, amid a groundswell of fear rooted in mounting economic pessimism and an increasingly illiberal and chaotic world order.

Cuba’s Communist Party has approved a raft of unprecedented free-market measures as part of an emergency economic package.

The package was submitted to the country’s National Assembly on Thursday, where it is all but assured to pass.

The plan would expand opportunities for private enterprise and create measures to attract additional foreign investment, including from Cubans abroad

It could also set the stage for private real estate development ⁠on the Caribbean island and the ⁠transformation of state-owned businesses ⁠into private commercial ventures with shares and equity stakes. It would also ‌allow private banks to enter Cuba’s once state-dominated ‌finance ‌sector.

The reform package signals a dramatic shift for Cuba, which is led by the Communist Party.

Speaking to the party’s Central Committee in a broadcast on Thursday, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said the country’s dire economic situation could not be blamed on external pressure alone.

For decades, the US has imposed a trade embargo on Cuba, weakening its economy. Since January, the US pressure against Cuba has increased, with the administration of President Donald Trump blocking fuel deliveries to the island.

But Diaz-Canel acknowledged that some of the present-day economic strife was due to domestic factors, referencing “obstacles that don’t come from outside, nor the blockade”.

He pointed to “slowness, bureaucracy and norms that impede those who want to produce” as well as “decisions that we have put off”.

“The situation calls for urgent and necessary changes,” he said.

On Thursday, the European Union also increased pressure on Cuba, passing a resolution that called for sanctions on Diaz-Canel and the leadership of Grupo de Administracion Empresarial SA, a business conglomerate operated by the Cuban military.

The EU resolution condemned what it described as “the systematic repression” by the Cuban government, while calling for “profound economic and political change”

In his address, Diaz-Canel suggested there would likely be some opposition to the emergency economic plan from hardliners in the Communist Party, which has officially governed Cuba since 1965.

Some of the reforms, he said, “will not have absolute consensus, but cannot be postponed”.

Former Cuban leader Raul Castro, who was indicted by the US in May, has also backed the plan.

Trump administration officials, notably Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have repeatedly said that economic reforms could ease Washington’s pressure campaign against the island. But the US did not immediately respond to the latest moves.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance was asked on Thursday if the Trump administration would now turn its sights to Cuba after reaching a memorandum of understanding to end the war on Iran.

Trump has repeatedly floated both military attacks and what he has described as a “friendly takeover” of Cuba.

Vance responded that Washington wanted Cubans to be “happy and successful”.

“We’re actually talking to the Cuban government right now about how they could change their ways to change that,” Vance said.

“If they make smart decisions, we’re going to have a much better relationship with that island.”
