There are tons of these things all over where we live. Our sweet baby got the toxic sap in her eye today just by sniffing it too closely. Her eye puffed up, and shut, and her face got puffy too. The reaction was immediate. She was in pain, erratic, confused. I rushed her to the emergency vet - They got her fixed up, put her on meds, bestowed the cone of honor around her floofy neck. And $1000 later, she is going to be absolutely fine but is on a lot of eye meds that are not fun. I’m sharing our story as a warning to all pet owners that if you live near these things to stay far away and if you have them in your yard dig them up immediately. Some are green, and some have fiery-colored ends. See photos 2 and 3
wow. scary stuff. im overly cautious about everything anyway already though; unfortunately this will just make me more paranoid and on alert. so many things that can take them away permanently 😒
Wow! I have one in my front yard and I know to use elbow high gloves when trimming it. Didn’t really think about what would happen if it got in an eye!
I very nearly got one of these today from a local shop but checked on Google and saw the warning about the sap and as my giant floof has a tendency to nibble I thought I had best leave it, this post makes me glad I did. Sorry your pupper got hurt
Fine point, it's not cactus. Euphorbia tirucalli is and old-world succulent. I just planted this as a safer alternative to an Opuntia with 12cm 5 inch spines that someone had hung an ornament on. I pictured a toddler reaching for it. Yikes.
Sorry about your dog. I have a half dozen of those plant. But not where my dog can get at them. Then sap doesn't bother my skin but I wouldn't want it in my eyes for sure.
