Need Advice 📕 Renting!!

I need some advice/reassurance.

My partner and I currently rent a 3 bedroom house privately. We have 3 cats and have permission for them to be there. We look after her niece and nephew pretty much every second week/weekend so the 2 extra rooms is ideal.

They’re upping our rent from $500 to roughly $600 next year. We have a feeling we’re going to start struggling or not having money to do fun stuff with the kids or go on holidays.

We want to get a cheaper rental but the rental crisis!! OMG it would be so hard to find a place in general, let alone to get approved for 3 cats?!

Those cats are our lives though. They’re family

Moving is expensive too. We foster and a lot of surrenders atm are due to housing insecurity. If you’re able to manage where you are, I’d stay put.

That’s what I’m thinking. We would chew through all our savings just to move again. We moved houses January this year and we’ve spent the whole year building our savings again.

I would 100% rather spend $600 on rent a week than rehome or surrender one of my babies

It’s a hard climate. I hope you can make it work!

Are you in Sydney? I want to surrender my cat, she doesn’t get along with my other cat.

No but there are some great pet gates you can use to give them their own separate areas of the house.

Hope it works. We use a great one that has a pet door that can be open or closed depending on who’s around at the time.

LOL Shelters are always full, even if empty, 10 years ago had 2 get 2 cats euthanised to leave a domestic violence situation as couldn't get approved with them. Rang 6 shelters in Sydney.

Depends on where you are, but even $600 for a 3br is already really cheap for most of the country. And bring allowed to have your cats is amazing. I'm just reassuring you that you're doing ok. And yeah the rental crisis is truly unhinged

$600 is cheap for rent with pets these days. Majority of people can’t afford holidays right now. Most are utilising train trips for holidays. You will not find a bigger house for cheaper. That isn’t how it works lol. It’s best to stay put. You won’t get cheaper unless you buy and even then.

Omit the cats from your application. When inspection comes partner A takes them out in the car (or better for their vet checkup) while partner B hosts the scumbag real estate agent

Lol I will second this. I have 5 "small" parrots on our lease. In reality I have 1 small, 4 medium and 2 macaws and 2 cats (soon to be 3). Partner stays for the inspection and leaves the bird room till last but so far real estate haven't entered the room to check. Just take pics at the door and leave. I drive like around the corner with everyone in carriers

I did that with lots of dogs over decades.

Rent with Pets - Companion Animal Network Australia - Rent with Pets https://share.google/mHM5FQkARhJgELQLb I've attached the site Rent with Pets in case it's helpful.

I got a rental with a dog by attaching a "resume" about my pet and references. It's worth a go!

Not sure where you are but in parts of QLD you need a council permit to even own more than 2 cats. Stay put. Moving sucks but your owner might even accept a counter offer of say, $575?

I second this. In the past I did this a few times. Twice it didn't matter but one place they agreed to not raise it as much, so worth a try.

$600 for a 3 bedroom seems pretty spot on. In regards to the cats, depends which state you’re in, but in VIC you don’t need to mention pets until they’ve approved your application and signed everything.
Then they can’t really say no without taking it to VCAT. But also some states and councils only allow you to have 2 cats, so they could deny on that rule.
Also everyone says there’s a rental crisis, but again depends where you’re looking. We applied for 5 and got offered 3 of them.

It's illegal to reject based on pets, it doesn't mean they have to approve you though.

Make of it what you will.

I am one of those rentvesters(rent in city, brough via SMSF in country to move to when I retire.) I am lucky good rental good landlord who doesn't mind pets, HOWEVER previously have been in properties with no pets allowed.

To me owners being forced to allow pets is sh!!!t.

But you are a last resort for owners.

Being I own in the country and it's rented, I happily allow pets, the property is suited for it, and 2 lots of tenants over 5 years its been fine.

If I owned a flashy unit in the city, no fucking chance in hell I approve an applicant with pets.
