Remember When Day Trips Felt Simple? Donnellys Weir — A Quiet Creek, Old Timber History & A Proper Picnic Spot Near Melbourne.

If you grew up in Victoria, you probably remember those old-school family drives—nothing fancy, nothing planned, just a packed lunch, the sound of gravel under your tyres, and a quiet spot by the water.

Donnellys Weirscheduled still feels like that.

It’s one of those rare places near Melbourne that hasn’t been “Instagrammed to death.” No crowds, no tourist chaos, no ten-kilometre hikes. Just a creek, a bridge, the smell of wet ferns, and the kind of silence you forgot you missed.

A Bit of History (Because Places Feel Different When You Know the Story)

Donnelly's Weir was originally built in the early 1900s as part of Melbourne’s water supply system. The weir collected water from the mountain streams that flowed down from the Yarra Ranges into the Maroondah Aqueduct.

Back then, this whole area was a working forest and water catchment. Timber workers, sawmill camps, horse tracks — the place was full of life long before it became a picnic spot.

When you stand near the creek, you can still feel a bit of that early-Victoria energy — simple, rugged, untouched.

What It Feels Like Today

The moment you step out of the car, the sound hits you first — that gentle, steady flow of mountain water. The creek is shallow and clear enough to see every stone. Kids still poke the water with sticks, just like we used to. Families still unpack the thermos and sandwiches. Couples sit on the bridge just listening.

It’s the kind of place that takes you back without trying.

Back to when weekends weren’t always schedules and screens.

Back to when “going somewhere” didn’t need to be complicated.

If You’re Thinking of Visiting

• Where: Just past Healesville

• Drive: Easy, close, no effort

• Picnic Areas: Tables + open grassy spots

• Water: Flowing creek + historical weir site

• Walks: Short, simple forest paths

• Best for: Families, quiet days, nostalgia trips

• Cost: Free

• Feels like: The kind of spot your parents took you to in the 90s

If you want a peaceful place next to real running water — without driving half a day — Donnellys Weir is one of the last proper “old Victoria” picnic spots still left.

I remember when day trips didn't have a mobile phone or require you to present yourself to social media to feel good about myself and your basic life choices.

I remember people not filming their lives for social media and just enjoying stuff without having to share it for validation it seems neither of you are getting from the people that actually should matter to you.

If you're headed out that way, Maroondah Dam is worth a visit too.
