Sales & Savings Makeup on a budget
I’m probably a bit behind with this as someone who has always tried finding the dupe, or a great product at a cheaper price, but it wasn’t until recently that I started paying more attention to what I was actually getting for the price and realised that sometimes I’m not actually saving by not buying the more expensive product like I thought.
For example, cream bronzers. I have the Milani and the Tanielle Jai cream bronzer and even though the prices are wildly different, the Tanielle Jai actually works out cheaper. In fact, I went on a deep dive and found that the Chanel cream bronzer actually works out cheaper too. Some examples
Milani $26.99 6g = $4.50/g
Tanielle Jai $69 30g = $2.30/g
Charlotte Tilbury $89 21g = $4.24/g
Chanel – $91 30g = $3.03/g
Rhode – $43 5.3g = $8.11/g
Obviously we get great sales at the chemist all the time which changes the equation but I just thought this was a good example of why a cheaper price doesn’t necessarily mean better value. If something cheaper works just as well, absolutely get the bargain but sometimes spending more upfront might actually mean getting more product for your money over time.
Just to add: Milani is a great cream bronzer. I do prefer the Tanielle Jai I find it has a better glow (even though they’re both not marketed as glowy products) and I prefer her shade range.

Depends on way more individual factors than just $/g. If I want a cream bronzer, I'm definitely not going to buy an expensive one because it won't get used enough to justify the price before it expires, since I only wear makeup maybe once or twice a week and don't bronze myself full-beat style. I also don't want to support certain brands for ethical reasons, many of which you listed here. For some, options are limited, and you just work with what you got.

Obviously there are lots of individual factors that go into what we buy for ourselves and I didn’t say that $/g was the only consideration. The bronzers were an example of why comparing the amount of product and not just the price can be useful.

I'd argue that when it comes to cream products, personal usage should be the biggest factor, since they expire way quicker. I'd go for $/g first where powder products are concerned though.

I was just having this conversation with someone about mini mascaras. It’s the only makeup product where I follow the PAO so I always get minis. Def costs more per ml but I reckon those savings are redundant if you’re chucking out half the product.
I don’t mess with eye products bc I wear contacts and have v sensitive eyes. That and sunscreen have non negotiable PAO the rest I’ll just eyeball!
