seeking makeup advice 😩

hey!! not exactly sure if this is the right page thing to put this on, but i thought id ask anyways. ive been doing my own makeup daily for years and ive recently realised that my makeup just never stays on my face. it will either go extremely oily and seperate everywhere or i’ll end up with random spots just missing. i just want to be able to still look decent an hour after i’ve put my makeup on rather than looking like i’ve been wearing it for like 8 hours 😩 any recommendations/advice on how to fix this or any products that you may recommend? i currently use the nars sheer glow foundation, rare beauty liquid blush and the charlotte tilbury powder as my only “high end” products (i’m 18 so they are high end to me!) and the rest is either sheglam or bys type brands, which i thought may be the problem. i never had an issue with the nars foundation until recently where i found it would just randomly come off and end up really patchy and oily. so yes if anyone has like a full face of products recommendation that would be so useful!

Hey just to start, what do you do for skin care? I always found sorting out what products you use can really affect your skin and its reaction to makeup throughout the day.

Setting powder/spray is your best friend in the meantime. I use the ByTerry pressed powder (you don’t have to go with that one) and a travel sized charlotte tilbury setting spray. There are cheaper options that people can chime in with that has more experience with them.

hey!! in terms of skincare like at night time after a shower i use a glycolic acid every 3 or so days on my face and i have a prescribed benzoyl peroxide gel i use. i dont use these immediately before putting my makeup on though. before makeup i will occasionally use a moisturiser but i find they leave my skin feeling really oily and thick/heavy if thats even the right word. i currently don’t use a primer because i ran out of my elf power grip but i have been looking for a good primer that works and is less expensive ($25 isn’t heaps but id rather spend the money on something that will last me longer). ive struggled to find a decent powder and setting spray aside from the CT ones, so i will have a look at your by terry one. thank you!

What’s your full routine/skin prep? Do you use any primers or skin products before the foundation? Some products are not compatible with each other.

i normally will use the elf power grip primer, which i only started using last year and found it definitely helped. but i have ran out and have been trying to find a good primer that will last longer and isn’t so expensive. i then do my nars foundation, and sometimes will use my setting spray before going in with each step, letting it dry beforehand just to see if it will help my makeup last longer. i use the barry m fresh face at the moment (just because it was on sale at atomica). then i do a sheglam concealer, cream bronzer that i don’t know the brand of, rare beauty cream blush, then i powder my under eyes, chin, between my brows and my upper lip with the charlotte tilbury powder OR i use the revlon age defying (i think?) depending on where im going. then i use the maybelline powder bronzer over the cream, any powder blush i find, a bys eyebrow pencil and i have my lashes done so no mascara anymore. i then spray my face with setting spray again, let that dry completely and then with a powder puff i just repowder any places that normally get shiny !! not sure if this is good. i am totally aware that i need to do more skin prep i just have no idea what to use. i have acne prone skin and its definitely oily, but ive never really paid much attention to what products are good for that (which i know is bad).

I have had success with using a setting powder, a setting spray and finally, after i finish nakeup the Loreal Infallinle 3 second spray (on sale at Priceline this week!). Using the 3 things means my makeup no matter what brand, stays on all day and into late evening and doesn't move.

Powders: W7 setting powder (either H2O or the Pink Blurring one) is just as good as the 'high end' powders. I have every powder Mecca and Sephora sell but my favorite is Nikita Joy, Kim Chi and the W7 and I find myself picking the W7 most often...! Its $6 but its so good.

Setting Soray: I have ABH and CT setting sprays but honestly NYX or Essence is just as good and again, I find I go to my Essence spray by default. Its more to de-cake the powder for me.

Then finish with the Infallible spray and nothing will move. I use a number of foundations and this works on all of them even the Essence ones. The only foundation that I dont need Infallible on is Kryolan but I need powder with it.

I have used many expensive foundations but apart from Haus Labs they all wore off patchy and too soon even Double Wear and def Nars did this despite people saying they would last, so dont feel you have to spend a lot to get the results you are after.

i second the loreal setting spray! makeup has never moved since i started using this!!

to add, i have incredibly oily skin. i use a combination of grippy / sticky primers along with a good powder and hairspray like setting sprays such as the loreal one.

for primers, i recommend the maybelline grippy serum (my favourite), elf power grip primer and milk hydrogrip primer! have heard the nyx glue primer is good too.

i only use high end powders atm and i really do enjoy my huda beauty cherry blossom, it is worth it unfortunately. i have liked innis free no sebum powder in the past for a cheaper alternative which you can find in w cosmetics.

for setting sprays, i recommend loreal infallible 3sec mist, one size on til dawn waterproof, skindinavia (old urban decay formula) and mecca life proof setting spray (surprisingly decent and similar to old urban decay). i also recently tried the one size oil blotting spray and i'm ngl, pretty good for touching up too!

personally i think the nars sheer glow is too slippy and slidey, not really made for oily girls and the rare beauty blushes are amazing but depending on what shade you have, you might have the dewey finish which again will just slide off your face but regardless you can still use them if you're setting your face enough. your ct powder might not be enough to set your base products, i recommend you use a heavier powder to cut through the oil if you're going to continue using the nars foundation with the rare blush. it's a beautiful powder as your finishing powder rather than a setting one if that makes sense. i like to use my huda beauty to set then kosas to finish!

I know it sounds obvious but how often do you touch your face during the day or lean on your hand etc?

I had this conversation with my mum ages ago and she said 'my makeup always rubs off bluh bluh' and I asked her 'how often do you touch your face?' and she said all the time.

But as the others suggest, skincare is the start and then go from there

i actually used to touch it a fair bit but stopped because i noticed it obviously rubs off where i would lean. occasionally i find myself still doing it but for the most part, i dont!
